Clinton's "Obliteration" remark is genocidal

Say you're sorry

Senator Clinton should apologize for using a genocidal term during her campaign. Her recent remark-- stating that if Iranians were to launch a nuclear attack against Israel, the United States would be able to obliterate Iran -- is out of the line, politically inappropriate, and reflects a hawkish approach toward foreign policy based on the Bush administration model.

Even neoconservative warmongers who have been saber rattling with Iran over the past 8 years have never used such a term. If the media were not distracted by Rev. Wright's controversial remarks, this comment would cause a huge backlash against Clinton.

This calls into question Clinton's ability to pick up the red phone at 3 a.m. and make a tough decision on a crucial foreign policy issue. Also, before taking that 3 a.m. call, Clinton should read the National Intelligence Estimates during the daytime. She did not read them a single time for Iraq in 2002 and consequently voted for the Iraq war.

Once again, it seems that she did not read the latest NIE on Iran's nuclear program (PDF), which is a collection of reports conducted by dozens of intelligence agencies. The report released last December emphasizes that Iranians stopped their efforts to make a nuclear bomb in 2003. This means Iran has no bomb to attack Israel with, and consequently there is no need to "obliterate" a country with 70 million people, three times larger that Iraq in size and population.

Even if Iranians were to gain a nuclear bomb, there would be no way for them to use it against Israel, simply due to the geography of the region. Palestinians and Israelis live side by side. No bomb has yet been made that can differentiate between ethnicities.

Clinton's attempt to be tough has pushed her to internalize a neoconservative tone in her foreign policy agenda that is disrespectful of international mechanisms in dealing with global crisis. This destructive approach has dramatically damaged the image of the United States since the Iraq war in 2003.

Moreover, in the literature of peace and conflict studies, "obliteration" of a country, in whatever shape or form, is genocidal, irresponsible and irrational.

While thousands of people have died in a war that could have been avoided, talking about obliteration of yet another country -- which President Bush has called "the third World War" -- does bode well for change in the White House in January 2009.

Clinton should also know that there are between 25,000 to 35,000 Jews in Iran. Jewish people have a member in the Iranian parliament. They can practice their religion freely to a large extent, and love their homeland, even though they might not like their controversial president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. She should also remember that Iranians were the first in the Middle East to show their sympathy for the victims of the 9/11 tragedy by lighting candles in their memory.

Clinton's remark is disrespecting millions of Iranians who are struggling hard for their rights, which include thousands of intellectuals, journalists and activists who have paid huge costs to change their society but still think that the west and Iran should engage in a constructive dialogue -- even with the current government -- rather than go to war.

Are you more Iraqi than Iraqis themselves

by samsam1111 on

America was built by Pragmatist(not eloquent, elegant) leaders like George Washington.Abraham Lincoln,George Bush:

George Washington 1776:

""God made all men naturaly equal.Ideas of earthly superiority are educational ,not innate.Kings were made for the good of the people, and not the people for them.No government has the right to take slaves of it,s subject""

"'Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action of a tyrant,a monarch or correupt aristochrastic nobility"'

"'The Nation, which indulges towards another an habitual hatred, or an habitual fondness, is to some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interest"'

President John F Kennedy
January 20, 1961

""We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution for the oppressed. Let the word go forth from this time and this place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans — born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage — and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world. Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and success of freedom &liberty."'

Facts:

%82 of Iraqis belive that removal of Saddam was just & timely,

America has spent 458Billion on Iraqi infra structure revamp program.

Of the socalled leftie liberal media claime of "1 million death" only %4 is attributed to direct american army involvment.the rest is caused by inter tribal and jehadist conflict(mullah regime had a big hand in it too)It would have happened sooner or later, with or without American presence.

Don,t believe mumbo jumbo of leftie opprtunists like moveon.org or charletans like Obama who is detached from reality and lives in fairy land.Obama is ten times more dangerous than Bush for Iran because he will keep wusssy toeing until mullahs get too brave and do something idiotic,,,then Mr peaceful Obama like his  predecessor carter(tabas invasion) will use US military on Iran....behind every major genocide in planet ,is always a leftie detached from reality mao/china,,trotski/russia,,khemer rouge/cambodia,,,,,,etc

Let's see how accurate you are, the intelligent, smart, well-read, sophisticated, Americanized, Bush lover:

Bush "liberated" Iraq by liberating over 1 million Iraqi from their LIVES, destroying Iraq's infrastructure, displacing 4.5 million Iraqis, including 2 million that have become refugees in the neighboring countries, creating havoc in the Middle East for decades to come, not to mention being responsible for the death of over 4000 young American men and women, over 30000 badly injured - most of them for life - and destroying the US reputation.

Yeah Iraqis were liberated at Abu Ghraib and other torture centers! And this was done to a nation that was not a threat to the US, and had nothing to do with the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but has plenty of oil.

In Afghanistan, the US attacked knowing fully that Osama bin Laden and his terrorist gang had left. But, as Rumsfeld said, "they needed to bomb a country to show that the US is strong." So, they attacked. Who helped them most to get rid of Taliban? The mullahs. This is not what I say, this is what the US officials have said.

After taking over, the US has done such a magnificent job, that the Taliban are making a strong comeback and are resurgent. So, every day, the poor Afghans are being liberated from their LIVES.

At home, Bush the hero has violated every civil right of the citizens, has been involved in some of the worst law breakings, has authorized illegal surveillance of the citizens, has destroyed the vibrant economy that the US had when he took over, has run up an incredible budget deficit, has widened the gap between the haves and have nots, has made it easy to pollute the environment, and in the process has given tax breaks to his buddies. His approval rating by the American people is in the 20s, the lowest of any president in memory.

Yeah! Bush is not only a "hero," but a "superhero," in fact, because it takes only a superhero to do so much damage in such a short time.

Do you have an urge to propagate lies and deceptions about Bush and company? You are making claims that even the good American people are not buying any more!

Bush is beyond stupid!! He liberated Afghanistan and Iraq? NO!!

by Anonymous-2 (not verified) on

I don't know where you have been in the past five years, but obviously you have either not kept abreast of the domestic news or foreign news covering the illegal war on Iraq and Afghanistan, or you are simply playing dumb!!.

If you think that Bush went into Iraq and Afghanistan to topple a dictator out of his benevolence for the Iraqi people or invaded Afghanistan to get rid of Taliban’s out of his desire to help the Afghan people, sorry but you are pandering the lines of the warmongers.

Bush is beyond stupid, he, Cheney, Condi Rice, Don Rumsfeld and the entire Bush Administration who waged an illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq should be impeached and immediately arrested for war crimes, for mass murder and for genocide. They have betrayed the trust of this nation by lying and illegally occupying another nation which posed no threat to this country. This illegal invasion has brought nothing but death and destruction to the Iraqi people.

Five years later we have over 4,000+ dead American soldiers and over 1.2 million innocent dead Iraqis and we are still not told what this noble cause was. We are told that the troops have to stay to honor the sacrifices of those who have died. We have yet to be told how to win an illegal occupation of a country.
.
What's happening in Iraq is NOT a war. It's an illegal occupation following the illegal invasion of a country that posed no threat to the United States.

Occupations are not won. They are ended.

It is quite clear that the people who started this planned for it to continue in perpetuity. There is no plan to ever exit.

Troops volunteer absolutely, and they know there are risks absolutely but they also do that with the trust that the Commander In Chief will not send them into a war unless it is absolutely and positively necessary because they are putting their lives on the line.

George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Condi Rice and every single member of the Bush Administration have betrayed the trust of the American troops time and time again and they need to be held accountable for it.

I don’t know if you are familiar with the Winter Soldiers Conference held in Washington D.C. (March 13 to 16 2008)? Over 200 Iraqi War Veterans stood up to tell their stories, of what they witnessed and what they themselves did in Iraq; their stories were horrendous; many of them talked about how they committed murder. They stood up and talked about it.

Every international news media outlet around the world covered the story, except for the American media which completely ignored and refused to cover the Winter Soldiers hearing. Could it be anymore obvious that the mainstream national media in this country is willingly complicit of selling the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq? The U.S. mainstream media wants to keep us occupied with the story that this bogus surge is working, and completely ignores the fact that this entire disaster never should have happened in the first place.

No there was no noble cause in the invasion of Iraq! This illegal invasion and occupation was for oil, it was for American dominance and hegemony in the Middle East; an illegal invasion, to start other illegal invasions and occupations. Even John McCain recently admitted that it was a war for “oil”.

Bush, Cheney and the entire Bush Administration, have simply replaced a dictator with an Imperialist power. The atrocities, genocide, murder and destruction that G.W. Bush, Dick Cheney and the entire Bush Administration have committed in Iraq is something that the former dictator could not have imagined in his dream.

Maybe you want to ask yourself this question how many innocent Iraqi deaths are acceptable to you in the illegal invasion and occupation of a country that posed no threat to the United States; deaths which would not have occurred if G.W. Bush had not lied?

How many innocent Afghan lives are acceptable to you by the invasion of the U.S. and NATO forces?

How many innocent American deaths would you be willing to accept if some other country illegally occupied and invaded the United States?

And maybe you want to ask yourself this question if someone broke into your home and ransacked your home and invaded your home, how many innocent deaths of your family members would you accept?

This is criminal. It has to end. Go to the web-sites and let the soldiers tell you themselves, what they have seen, and what they have done and how all of this has to end.

There was absolutely, positively no benefit as a result of these illegal invasions for the people of Iraq and Afghanistan both countries are far worse off than ever before.

Finally, George Bush is beyond stupid (and this is putting it mildly) while Ahmadinejad is in a totally different stratosphere and incomparable to George W. Bush in every which way one wants to analyze Ahmadinejad ( I mean it in a positive way)!!

OK, Mammad, Shame on me,

by Anonymousam (not verified) on

For not being transparent and not knowing Mr. Memarian like you do. My apologies to Mr. Memarian for my harsh tone. But, this does not change my resentment of the sensitivities that many posters have shown over Ms. Clinton’s remark to her stance in a hypothetical situation. What is baseless is this sensitivity. Right or wrong, in my opinion, only those who defend status quo in Iran would demonstrate such sensitivity. Many Iranian who support Obama have used it to bolster support for their candidate. All I am saying is that at least she had the integrity to speak openly about where she stands. To call it “saber rattling” by Obama is pure nonsense and political rambling.

Mr. Obama has lost my respect by his lack of integrity. Jeramiah Wright had enough integrity to stand by his position and defend it under the most hostile of political environment. Barak, on the other hand, lacked the courage and integrity to stand by what he truly stands for. He dumped his spiritual father of 20 years in a heart beat when political pressure was too much. Pardon my language, but, it is bullshit to say for 20 years you have known someone and supported his beliefs, and, all of a sudden, you don’t even know this guy. It is insulting to me (as a dumb observer) or any intelligent person.

To me, respectful dialogue and constructive negotiation is the civilized path to peaceful co-existence. But, to think appeasing extremists is equivalent to peaceful dialogue is the ultimate naivety. Mr. Carter proved that in 1978.

As usual, your take on the issue is accompanied by a hollow sense of indignation.

Let's inspect the things that you mentioned:

Arabs DO hate Iranians and have done so for centuries, except, of course, when Iran supports Palestinians, which Arabs do not!

Israel IS trying to provoke an attack on Iran.

The US IS trying to make another Iraq out of Iran, or another Iran of the Shah's era.

The US IS an imperial power. Millions of American progressives believe it, and even the necons do not deny it, but you, the-more-catholic-than-the-Pope man, do.

The Republican Party IS dominated by the neocons. It was not like this in the past, but it is now. Millions of Americans believe this, but you, the- more-catholic-than-the-Pope-guy, do not.

Democrats DO support Israel blindly. It is one thing to say, "If Iran attacks Israel, I'll defend Israel," but a completely different thing to say, "I'll obliterate Iran." Obliterating Iran means killing every man, woman and child in a nation of 72 million. Just read the editorial by the Boston Globe (not Tehran Keyhan) to see what it says.

Hillary Clinton IS a political animal, believing in nothing other than that she should be the president. She is Bill Clinton's wife, the man who said, "if Israel is in danger, I'll take up a gun and fight for it," but the man who dodged military service for his own country.

The IAEA has NOT found a shred of evidence about a secret nuclear weapon program in Iran.

The UN Resolutions against Iran ARE illegal, because they violated the UN Charter. I suggest you read a recent article on www.payvand.com/news/ By M. Sahimi, a nuclear expert, in which the illegality of the UN Resolutions has been amply demonstrated.

What do these make you? A man who is too happy to take anything against Iran on its face value, regardless of whether it is true or not. A man who is not capable of separating Iran's national interests from the mullahs' interests, mixes them up and, therefore, ends up being anti-Iran, even though he does not, or may not, mean it.

by Farhad Kashani (not verified) on

What a bunch of bologny. For these guys, If the U.N condemns Iran of violation of human rights and enrichment activities, then the U.N is “an U.S and Israeli puppet”! If the U.S condemns Iran, then U.S is “imperialist”. If Israel condemns Iran, then Israel is “Zionist”. If E.U condemns Iran, then is “Colonizer”. If Arabs condemns Iran, then Arabs are “anti Persian”. If IAEA says it cannot clarify Iran activity, then it’s a “U.S puppet”. If republicans condemn Iran, then they’re “neo cons”. If Democrats condemn Iran, then they are “satisfying their Zionist bosses”. For them , everyone who condemns Iran of its infinite and enormous human rights violations, terrorism sponsoring, Islamic fundamentalism inspiring and supporting, horrible record in human rights, economy, international relation……then they would immediately start to character assassinate them. The amount of hypocrisy here is unseen in history! These guys truly do not represent the Iranian people. These people are justifying the actions of the fascist regime in Tehran and Qom. At best, they are misguided and misinformed and at worst, they are partners in the crimes against Iranian people. Mr. Memarian, I agree that Hillary’s remarks were foolish and Iran will never ever use nuclear bomb against Israel. However, I like to get your view on things that Khomeini said such as “just like Imam Ali killed thousands a day for the sake of Islam, we will do the same.” “This government is set up to export the Islamic revolution (i.e. Islamic fundamentalism”.” Israel az safheteh roozegar bayad mahv gardad (Israel should be wiped off the map). He actually came up with an idea that all Muslim should hold a “Satl e aab” and pour it on Israel! Now I agree that Israel has occupied Arab lands and it should get out, but kicking out Israel is one thing and wiping it off the map is totally another. Also, Ahmadi nejhad said last week” Iran will not rest until all the corrupted forces that run the world today are wiped off the map”. So prove to us that you and people who support you do not engage in hypocrisy.

Democrats Okay Funds for Covert Ops
Secret Bush "Finding" Widens War on Iran
By ANDREW COCKBURN

Bush's secret directive covers actions across a huge geographic area – from Lebanon to Afghanistan – but is also far more sweeping in the type of actions permitted under its guidelines – up to and including the assassination of targeted officials. This widened scope clears the way, for example, for full support for the military arm of Mujahedin-e Khalq, the cultish Iranian opposition group, despite its enduring position on the State Department's list of terrorist groups.

Similarly, covert funds can now flow without restriction to Jundullah, or "army of god," the militant Sunni group in Iranian Baluchistan – just across the Afghan border -- whose leader was featured not long ago on Dan Rather Reports cutting his brother in law's throat.

Other elements that will benefit from U.S. largesse and advice include Iranian Kurdish nationalists, as well the Ahwazi arabs of south west Iran. Further afield, operations against Iran's Hezbollah allies in Lebanon will be stepped up, along with efforts to destabilize the Syrian regime.

All this costs money, which in turn must be authorized by Congress, or at least a by few witting members of the intelligence committees. That has not proved a problem. An initial outlay of $300 million to finance implementation of the finding has been swiftly approved with bipartisan support, apparently regardless of the unpopularity of the current war and the perilous condition of the U.S. economy.

This was the entire debate we had on Patrick Clawson's article about the MEK. They are going to use all of these terrorist groups, Jundallah, MEK, PJAK etc.

Dear OMid: Having fallen behind Obama in superdelegate counts, she is now resorting to pander to Republican's right-wing's deeply rooted racism and their vindictive sentiments against IRanians. Many in the Red states and the South still think Iran should be punished for taking American Hostages for 444 days and they see us onl as 'sand niggers' not real human beings. Obliterate is euphimism for 'Nuck'em'. It has been a common sentiment since the hostage crisis in most Red states where this bigotted lunatic fundamentalist live. As long a considerable number of Americans feel this way about Iranians there will always be politicians who would try to exploit this kind of hatred. Perhaps, Iranian-American community needs to give a benefit concert for homeless or needy Iraq-war....

That word was proably chosen...

by K Nassery on

I think the candidates have meetings where they plan reactions to certain issues.  Hillary can portray herself as strong and a anti terror leader by attacking Iran because, over 30 year, Iran has shown itself to be our enemy.  For almost 300,000,000 Americans...  threatening Iran will carry no real negative outcome.

Iran has chosen to be the enemy of the USA.  Although, I think President Carter is and was a dunce, he would never have done anything against Iran in 1979 or afterwards.  Taking our Embassy employees/diplomats/ spies  hostage was a huge mistake.  Shouting "Death to America" every Friday at mosque is a huge mistake.  Even though I try to tell people that the Iranian people are not our enemies...no one believes me.  Harboring bin Laden's son just means Iran is pro al Qaeda to Americans who make judgements on sound bites.

Iranian leaders won't change how they deal with the US and the current Administration of the US is ineffective.  There is no hope for a resolution now or in the near future.

I don't like the word "obliterate," but I believe that the Islamic leaders of Iran would love to obliterate all Israelis and I...love Iran.

I'm personally hoping that the Supreme Leader will pass on into the afterlife and that someone more reasonable take over the theocratic dictatorship of Iran. I'm also hoping that Obama gets elected in the USA.

Freaks and Nuts!

by Kamangir on

Clinton, is considered to be a well educated and experienced person who happens to represent the most progressive and educated of the American society and yet we see that she speaks like an insane and mentally unstable person. Ahmadinejad does not represent Iranians, he belongs to the lowest of the Iranian social structure (culturally speaking) and if he ever made a similar comment about Israel, we cannot expect much from from someone like him.

The way I see it, he is probably much more stable, fair and informed about world affairs than Clinton is and I mean it. When clinton uses that expression (obliteration) against Iran, she's disrespecting every single Iranian living in Iran. The only reason she's somehow popular is because her opponen is a black man and that's it. Then you have McCain, with his 'bomb Iran' song.

I have lost much of the respect I had for US political system. I am totally against the IRI for what they have done to my country and people, for brutalizing Persians and teh Persian culture but, I am very much against 'any' military action against Iran. An attack on Iran is a madness and as the former British minister of foreign affairs once said: it's 'nuts'.

She is a power hungry maniac willing to use any dirty trick !

by Anonymous-2 (not verified) on

Obviously for Senator Clinton the end justifies the means.

In order to come to power, Hillary Clinton's statement demonstrated she is willing to commit an act of genocide to wipe to ashes 70,000,000 people, and a country which has:

(1) Never threatened the U.S., Israel, or any country for that matter with an attack.

And for all those Persian speaking individuals you should know better than to continue to equate Ahmadinejad's statement with a call for genocide by Hillary.

Ahmadinejad never said he wants to attack Israel or "wipe it off the map". By repeating this rubbish, I don't care how much you hate Ahmadinejad or the IRI, honesty means saying the truth regardless of ones' hatred toward another person or the regime!

Stop feeding this frenzy with false information that has already been used as a "pretext" by the U.S. and Israel!

(2) Iran does not possess and has never possessed nuclear weapons. This has been asserted by every single IAEA report and at minimum to back-track the fact that the U.S. has no evidence by the NIE report.

(3) Senator Clinton should use her intelligence, how could Iran even hope to attack either the West or Israel with even a remote prospect of success, given the overwhelming nuclear and conventional second-strike capability of the United States and of Israel. Even if Iran had nuclear weapons - which it does not - the basics of nuclear strategy would still apply: Whoever shoots first, dies second. Whoever attacks the United States or Israel with a nuclear bomb might as well blow himself up straightaway.

In terms of numbers, the United States has the nuclear weaponry to kill 20 billion people. That means it could burn to a cinder all 70 million Iranians three hundred times over. And Israel already possesses 200 to 500 nuclear weapons, enough to obliterate the entire region. I hardly believe Israel can consider itself a helpless victim.

Iran's defense budget is just one hundredth of that of the United States. Unlike the major Western powers, Iran has not attacked another country for 300 years, though it has been attacked several times - mind you with the help of the West.

There are currently over 1,000,000 Iranians who were severely wounded or injured in the war with Iraq who are victims of chemical weapons. Western powers including the U.S. are directly responsible for this suffering.

How much more suffering those the U.S. intend to inflict on the Iranian people?

This was the lowest that anyone could go to grab votes from the Jewish community, the Israeli Lobby and to appease Israel.

Her statement demonstrates the same doltish ignorance that has distinguished Bush's foreign relations. It offers only violence where there should be negotiations and war where there could be peace.

Hillary Clinton demonstrated to everyone that if she were the next occupant of the White House, Iraq-like death and destruction would be the order of the day.

This is a person who is barely fit to run for office, let along sit behind the most powerful desk in the world.

Ms. Clinton definitely owes an apology to Iran and the Iranian people. If such a statement was made by Iran, I can assure you bombs would have already been showered over her with absolutely no mercy whatsoever!

You just don't get it Anonymous21

Bill Clinton once said,

If Israel is in danger, I'll take up a gun and fight for her.

This is the same Bill Clinton who dodged military service for his OWN country, the US.

You and people like you just don't get it: These people will do anything to get to power. Part of it is appeasing Israel's lobby, as Israel controls the US policy in the Middle East. As Ariel Sharon said, "Don't worry about the US; we own it."

And you, the Westernized, enlightened, educated, freedom lover, Iranian patriot: can you make a comment without labeling people, without calling them names, without making baseless accusation?

Do you even know who Omid Memarian is? The young man has been in IRI's jail, and was forced to go into exile. He did not volunteer for it. When was the last time you were in Iran? If you did go to Iran recently, what did you do? "Aasseh biya aasseh boro keh gorbeh shaakhet nazaneh!" And then hide behind an anonymous name, attacking true patriots? Omid has put his neck out with full transparency, expressing his opinion. Why don't you the same?

Shame on you.

Mr. Memarian and your supporters

As an Iranian I resent your incinuation and condemnation of the only legitimate candidate for presidency. Please don't let your place of birth blind you to reality. Blind nationalism is what has kept the inhumane rule of IRI on our nation.

Those who are pulling your chain should know what awaits them if they mis-behave. Be it nuking Israel or any other ally of democracy. Truth could be bitter whether you like it or not.

Rest assured, whether stated in open and clear words or wrapped in political jargons, any president of the united state and/or any democracy loving nation would do the same. Hillary just had the balls to say it without a shadow of a doubt.

So, next time before you start raising your fist and shout "marg bar amrika", flush the thought of nuking another nation out of your mind and the mind of those who you elected to make such threats. Otherwise, you will be obliterated (and deserved so...)

Hillary's Remarks

by Lance (not verified) on

I can't stand Hillary, but her "obliteration" remark is NOT genocidal. It's reactionary.

Iran's nuke threat to Israel IS genocidal.

AhmaJihad is the dolt who needs to apologize...and then be hauled off in a straight jacket to a padded cell.
