McCain is right
by Ben Madadi
09-Apr-2008

Mr Patraeus, and Mr Crocker, top US men in Iraq, were complaining about Iranian troublemakers; special groups, as they were calling them. They separated Muqtada Al Sadr's men from those who are even more directly linked to Iran. Watching democracy's works in the US, where commander of the US army in Iraq and an ambassador, answer to the questions of the elected officials for 9 hours, makes you wonder when this kind of a scene may be possible in a country like Iran, where not only the people do not have access to the information (for instance why is Iranian money and man-power is engaged in creating chaos in a neighbouring country) but even many of the high-ranking officials are kept in the dark by those who are operating behind the scenes.

I listened to the senators’ speeches, Obama, Clinton and McCain. I agree with Mr McCain's assertions on Iraq; they seemed courageous and noble. I do not agree with bombing Iranian nuclear sites (McCain was once singing, serious or not, about this) because I think that would rather create more public support for the Iranian regime, but I do agree with dealing with the Iranian regime in an intelligent and productive, also serious, manner in order to prevent it from obtaining nuclear weapons, which it does pursue, with the cost of poverty and isolation for the Iranians. Going back to the Iraq issue, I noticed that in the Senate hearing, both Hillary Clinton (who has voted for the war authorisation) and Barack Obama, wanted to retreat from Iraq as soon as possible.

I could not exactly grasp the point why! It all seemed to me as lack of leadership and definitely pure and poor populism, which I think will be the losing ticket for both (whoever gets the Democratic nomination, likely Obama) of them in the presidential elections. I do not believe that the American electorate is going to waste more than 4,000 American dead soldiers, and tens of thousands of American wounded, and about one trillion US dollars of tax-payers money to be forgotten just when the hardest part of the work was already behind. It is also very difficult for them, Clinton and Obama, to back away from their original campaign promises (ill-devised) when things were somehow different. I think they are both doomed.

How can America leave Iraq before things are done, and done well? Yes, that would save some extra American taxpayer dollars, but what about much greater sums that have already been spent? Do Muslim masses who hate America (instead of hating their own regimes) know that it is not the Iraqi oil money that is paying the US expenses in Iraq? The US is losing vast amounts of money in its operations in Iraq and it is actually paying for most of the Iraqi reconstruction, while Iraq is selling its oil in the free market and the money is not being spent properly because Al Qaeda terrorists, and the Iranian-backed groups, are disrupting the reconciliation and reconstruction efforts.

I know that it was the US who invaded Iraq in the first place and I know that it was the US whose huge mistakes in Iraq caused the deaths of many innocent Iraqis (far fewer than those killed because of Muslim extremists), but this is also another reason why the US has the moral obligation to stay in Iraq and create a stable democracy and a prosperous society. It can be done, but it may take time. It can be done because also Iraq has oil. It is as simple as that. But without the US keeping the thugs, terrorists, and foreign troublemakers at bay, it is very possible for all the losses that have occurred so far to be in vain. Without the US, Iraq will be the battleground of both Iraqi factions and also foreign meddlers, for years and years to come. And the Iranian regime, while calmly developing nuclear weapons, will use Iraq as the symbol of failure of democracy, and American moral standing, for the intimidation of its own population and other peoples of the Middle East who are struggling with their own ruthless regimes.

Iran will be no friend of a free Iraq if the Americans will retreat. The Iranian regime will not want a democratic, even a Shia-dominated one, to do well. They may have the same faith, but Iranian mullahs prefer power. A neighbouring Shia prosperous Iraq will become a rival for the Shia Iranian regime and that would be undesirable for a non-democratic leadership. Iran does not have Iraq's oil compared to the population (it has much less oil per capita), and the more Iran's neighbours prosper the more the Iranian regime fears for its survival, as it finds itself facing a population making comparisons, eventually losing appetite for defending the regime against possible threats, from inside or outside.

Many American politicians, mostly left-leaning, say that America must focus on Afghanistan, rather than Iraq. That would probably be a good option if there were already a stable Iraq in place, or at least Saddam was in power. But that is not the case now. Afghanistan is a primitive country, with extremely poor infrastructure and no easy access to any sort of communication with the outside world, a very difficult and hostile landscape and terribly scarce resources of any kind. Afghanistan will not become a seriously prosperous country for a very long time to come. It simple lacks the basic necessities of becoming a prosperous country. Afghanistan does not look good, and it never did ever since its creation. Afghanistan can do well, but it cannot become something like the UAE. But Iraq can. That is why America needs to focus on Iraq more. Will Al Qaeda continue to use Afghanistan as one of its land bases? Possibly! But as far as we know Al Qaeda is based in Pakistan, rather than Afghanistan.

Actually Al Qaeda does not necessarily need such a base. Al Qaeda is more like a state of mind, and it can stay alive and well in the minds of ordinary dissatisfied Sunni Muslims, especially young and naive ones, as long as there are serious reasons for their being so. Al Qaeda can do quite well in the cyber-space, as it already is doing. The best way to tackle Al Qaeda is to tackle its foundation where it attracts its followers, by proving it wrong, through the promotion of prosperity and democracy in Iraq, where the only serious chance of having some sort of a success story (as senator McCain was also saying) exists. A free and prosperous Iraq will do the greatest damage to Islamic extremism. And this will also be a huge blow for the Iranian fundamentalist regime, and definitely good for the Iranian people and their future.

G.W. bush again?

by Ali A Parsa on

I found much truth and amusement when I read that an oppoent of McCain called him G.W. McCain and many who call McCain's hopefully unlikely presidency a third term for G.W. We have to honor the feeling of majority of Americans who oppose a Republican in the White House because of bad taste G.W. has left in their mouths in every aspect of their lives. McCain may be a good man, but how can we justify his not learning from Vietnam war experience that caued more than 50,000 American lives and far more native people, not speaking of American resources? If we forgive him for that, how can we justify his intention to move America from one quagmire(Iraq)into another one(Iran). Worse yet, how can an Iranian-American be so indifferent to death and destruction of his motherland(Iran) and his adopted land(America)? Zion calls McCain's "bomb Iran" song a joke. I wonder if he could get away with killing a person and callng his action a joke. Where is respect for huma life? Our commitment to our homeland and adopted country is irrespective of who rules it. I, for one never hate America because I do not like G.W. and the same is true about Iran. The country we call motherland has gone through some 400 rulers, but our unique culture has survived and will do so forever. It is quite immature to be a mothpiece for warmongers and hatemongers when we need peace, love and respect for survival of our troubled world. Let us not be a disgrace to human race!

Answers to some of your questions

by MrShocki (not verified) on

Q:for instance why is Iranian money and man-power is engaged in creating chaos in a neighbouring country

A: The chaos was created by the invading forces. What do you think the U.S. would do if Mexico was invaded by the Soviets ?

Q: How can America leave Iraq before things are done, and done well?

A: Do you mean when cheap oil starts to flow and Access to Iraqs vast oil reserves are limited to Multinational oil companies?

Q: Do Muslim masses who hate America (instead of hating their own regimes) know that it is not the Iraqi oil money that is paying the US expenses in Iraq? The US is losing vast amounts of money in its operations in Iraq and it is actually paying for most of the Iraqi reconstruction

A: Do you really think that The US is spending money on the reconstruction of Iraq out of it's own pocket. They are investing this money for their own (They will get the money back do not worry) . Since they plan to be there for a long long time. (Think Japan, South Korea, Germany, etc)

Q: But without the US keeping the thugs, terrorists, and foreign troublemakers at bay, it is very possible for all the losses that have occurred so far to be in vain

A: foreign troublemakers ? (Invaders?)
terrorists ? please Lookup the definition
of terrorist in the dictionary
(Terrorism, in the modern sense,[2] is
violence against civilians to achieve
political or ideological objectives by
creating fear). Please refer to Winter
Soldier testimony online

Ben & Zion

by Mammad (not verified) on

Indeed, I would get worried, Ben, when someone as prejudiced as Zion, whose name says it all, admires an article about Iran.

John McCain is a dangerous man. His solution to every problem around the world? Put more American boots on the ground. As soon as one questions him, he brags about his 6 years in prison in Vietnam, as if that has made him a military strategist.

This is the man who has proclaimed that, it would be fine with him if the Iraq war continues for another 100 years.

This is the guy whose FIRST reaction to a question about Iran was, "bomb, bomb, bomb" Iran.

This is a man who opposed recent legistlature banning use of waterboarding in interrogation, one of the worst types of torture.

This is the man who made a fool of himself when he went to Baghdad last year, stared into a camera, and declared it safe, while being accompanied by tens of security men. 60 minutes on CBS made fund of him and his situation.

This is the man who recently claimed in Baghdad that Iran trains the Al Qaeda in Iraq. Things got so bad that Senator Joe Liberman, the Israeli patriot who is on the US payroll, had to intervene to correct him!

This is the man who says that the Vietnam "mistake" must never be repeated. No, he does not mean that the US should not have gone into Vietnam, rather, that the US should not have withdrawn from Vietnam, presumably fighting another 100 years war (the result of which would have been the same, the defeat of the US).

This is the man who many people have published many articles about his mental stability (I can see why!).

You can check the accuracy of all of this easily.
I can go on with this, but if you have an open mind, Ben, which many people in this column say you do not, you should get the picture.

Teflon John Ain't Right

by Rahmon (not verified) on

Teflon John is the wrong choice, first for USA and then for the rest of the world. He is just a W version and just like W he will lash out instead of reach out. Mr. Ben regarding your article, it is obvious you will never be a good politician. You got your facts badly discombobulated. Please read Mammad’s comment. You might pick up one or two reasonable and applicable points.

Zion

You are right Ben!

by Zion on

This was a very good piece with sound reasonings. So well done. (I hope you don`t mind, as we know some here would consider you a criminal if you merely to receive a Jew`s compliments.)

The US has no plans to attack Iran. McCain`s singing was a joke. An ugly one really, Is didn`t like it either, but it was obviously meant as a joke.
Although people here are over saturated with conspiracy theories, and some of the islamic republic apologists use it constantly as a very effective scare tactic, it is simply absurd to think the US will just invade one country after another without some real real provocation. Iraq was a very special case after a very special situation.

This doesn`t mean that war is out of the question. If Iran persists on this route, it will finally come to a point where US national interests will leave it no choice but to take action. The same goes with Israel, and it would be all the fault of mad mullahs in Tehran. Even worse, if G-d forbid, a nuclear terrorist attack is waged against a US city, all gloves will come off, and there woule be even the threat of US nuclear retaliation against regimes like Iran. All the efforts are made to prevent this. This is the correct context to view everything. The consequences for civil rights and liberties in the West will be as tragic. As you said, a retreeat from Iraq will only make such a catastrophy more probable. Here is a good video by Gingrich making an excelllent point in this regard:

Thanks Ben for a rare rational and meaningful article.

Might As Well Be Listening to Israel Radio!!!

by Mehdi on

What is this piece of trash Ben? You been under hypnosis again? Commenst are actually worth reading here, so far - especially read comments from "Mammad." Maybe you will learn something.

This is the worst part of your trash: "I do not agree with bombing Iranian nuclear sites (McCain was once
singing, serious or not, about this) because I think that would rather
create more public support for the Iranian regime, but..."

So, your concern, in the case of a potential war, is NOT the people who will be killed but that your hated regime will gain more support? You are very sick now! You have sunken much lower than what you consider IRI to be. Disgusting!

When they brainwash you guys, do they use the chant "Never Again!" a lot?

Don't Be So Cocky!

by Dariush (not verified) on

As they say be carefull what you wish for,it might come true!
since Iran has not given up for her right under pressure has worried west and Israel that maybe Iran already is in possessetion of nuclear weapons. Acceptance of precondition offers will asure not, and will triger war. Other wise will slow or eliminate the war. That is why they don't want a mutual agreement. If Iran does have it,it will be the end fore Israel. It that have to be that way. So everybody better get on the streets and start protesting the war before it is too late.

This is John McCain

by Arya Pournourbakhsh on

McCain is wrong.  This is his plan for Iran.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-zoPgv_nYg

Is this what we want?  More of our troops dying for nothing.  Bring the Troops home.  More than 4000 beautiful lives lost.  Thousands are maimed for life.  Obama from the donkey party wants to start negotiation with the terror mongers in Iran.  What the hell is that about?  Ignorant idiot.  I will never want to see an islamic republic embassy in DC.  This election we are stuck in choosing between dumb and dumber.  May God have mercy on our country.

You are so blind. You are ready to kill a whole lot just because you think it is a job that has to get done? You are by far worse than any wacko redneck. You are dangerous. People who cannot fathom peace like you truly make me sick. Are you by any chance a member of jewish defense league? Your rethoric reminds me of some good old jewish friends of mine who are so brainwashed that they cannot see right from wrong due to so much hatred and negativity in their heart. Please take your bull somewhere else.

Dear Ben

It saddens me to see an Iranian promoting the one candidate who is the sure bet to see that our beloved Iran will be bombarded.

How can we promote the killing of Iranians? How can we help the ones who want to do so?

ask your Representative to sign on as a co-sponsor of this new legislation for diplomacy with Iran

lets hope we can stop these greedy old men from ruining the lives and the future of our people, like they did to Iraqis.

Thank you

Ben

by Mammad (not verified) on

Ben:

Invasion of Iraq was illegal, because it had no United Nations Security Council backing. Those who are responsible for it - Tony Blair, George Bush, and Dick Cheney - should be put on trial by International Criminal Court. Therefore, the US and Britain are also responsible for any civilian killed in Iraq as a result of this illegal war.

Do not surgarcoat the crimes of US and Britain by blaming muslim extremists. Those extremists (and they are extremists, not muslim, although they call themselves that) were not there before the invasion. The US and Britain were also warned by many objective and informed experts and analysts about the consequences of invading Iraq.

You also misunderstand what the experts say about Afghanistan. They are not urging the US and the West to focus on Afghanistan, because they hope that it can soon become a prosperous country. No, they do so because the Taliban are making a strong come back; because the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan is where the extremists train their people, and because if the extremists are defeated once for all in Afghanistan the danger that Pakistan poses against the world will also largely ebb.

Knowingly or unknowingly you also repeat the Bush's lies about the connection between Iraq and Al Qaeda. There was no connection. The Al Qaeda in Iraq is NOT the same as the Al Qaeda that attacked the US. It came about only because the US and Britain invaded and occupied Iraq. Therefore, your statement that to prove Al Qaeda wrong Iraq must prosper, while may superficially sound reasonable, is misleading.

Al Qaeda will be defeated when the root cause of the problems in the Middle East are addressed. These are:

1. The Blind support of Israel by the US, and the plight of the Palestinians;

2. the support of the West for dictatorial and corrupt regimes in the Middle East, from Egypt and Saudi Arabia, to Jordan, Kuwait, United Arab Emirate, and

3. illegal invasions, such as Iraq's, and the threats against countries such as Iran. In Iran's particular case, the West has still not recognized that, so long as it threatens Iran with war, it only helps the reactionary right in Iran to stay in power.

We Want To Know

We all know what McCane has on his mind. What we like to know is what he's hiding under his skin on the left side of his face and what's up with his hands?
