Hi Massoud,

     Yeah! That is great!  I am sorry I did not read the collection closely and missed the poem. It is exciting to have the most famous Sufi poem posted in Farsi and English together!

Thank you!

Yolanda, I found the poem using your link! Thank you so much :)

I decided to post it as a separate blog: Here it is :) -  Please post a nice English translation there ... I couldn't copy and post the Persian Text .. Instead I took a picture of it (in Calligraphy) and posted it on top of the blog .. I typed the Farsi version from that ..... Massoud

Hi! Massoud,

     Yes, I have e-mailed him and asked him for the poem number. I hope he will e-mail me back.

Thanks,

Yolanda, Is it possible for you to ask him what the number is? Tell him that we already have a Divan-e Shams in Farsi. If he gives you the right number (or numbers), I can look it up ..... Massoud

Hi! Massoud,

     Coleman Barks e-mailed me back, here is his e-mail:

"Reynold Nicholson's Divani Shamsi Tabriz has the English on one side and the farsi on the other, of that poem.  It is not called Only Breath.  It just has a number.

Coleman Barks"

**************************

I just e-mailed him again and told him that I read every poem from the following site and found nothing like "Only Breath"

//www.rumionfire.com/shams/index.htm

***************************

I just don't understand why he does not want to give me the Farsi version of "Only Breath"......the poem belongs to Rumi, not him!

Amazon sells Nicholson's book with Rumi's English and Farsi poems side by side:

Yolanda, Thank you so much for your exhaustive efforts in trying to find the Farsi version of 'Only Breath'. Your videos that you have posted, and the English Translations of Rumi's works are all great!

Right now, I am working on a new blog: The theme of it is Mowlana, Shams, God, and Holy Spirit. Ostaad Jamshid has sent me the Deklameh. The poem is a brand new one, not one from the old blogs re-issued  with a Deklameh (Recitation).

I want you to know that when you are listening to the Deklameh of the new blog, 'Khodavand' is God, and 'Rooh-ol-Ghodos' is Holy Spirit ('Rooh' means Spirit, and 'Ghodos' means Holy). Of course, 'Shams' and 'Mowlana' are pronounced the same way in the Recitation (Deklameh) that they are written here.

When it's ready, I'll leave a comment here for you and others as a reminder ..... Massoud

*************

I come to you without me, come to me without you.
Self is the thorn in the sole of the soul.
Merge with others,
If you stay in self, you are a grain, you are a drop,
If you merge with others, you are an ocean, you are a mine.

Who am I ? By Rumi

Who am I ?

What is to be done, O Moslems? For I do not recognise myself.
I am neither Christian, nor Jew, nor Gabr, nor Moslem.

I am not of the East, nor of the West, nor of the land, nor of the sea;
I am not of Nature’s mint, nor of the circling heaven.

I am not of earth, nor of water, nor of air, nor of fire;
I am not of the empyrean, nor of the dust, nor of existence, nor of entity.

I am not of India , nor of China , nor of Bulgaria , nor of Saqsin.
I am not of the kingdom of ’Iraqian, nor of the country of Khorasan

I am not of this world, nor of the next, nor of Paradise , nor of Hell.
I am not of Adam, nor of Eve, nor of Eden and Rizwan.

My place is the Placeless; my trace is the Traceless;
’Tis neither body nor soul, for I belong to the soul of the Beloved.

I have put duality away; I have seen that the two worlds are one;
One I seek, One I know, One I see, One I call.

He is the first, He is the last, He is the outward, He is the inward;
I am intoxicated with Love’s cup, the two worlds have passed out of my ken;

If once in my life I spent a moment without thee,
From that time and from that hour I repent of my life.

If once in this world I win a moment with thee,
I will trample on both worlds; I will dance in triumph for ever.

A Poem by Rum

Why think thus O men of piety
I have returned to sobriety
I am neither a Moslem nor a Hindu
I am not Christian, Zoroastrian, nor Jew

I am neither of the West nor the East
Not of the ocean, nor an earthly beast
I am neither a natural wonder
Nor from the stars yonder

Neither flesh of dust, nor wind inspire
Nor water in veins, nor made of fire
I am neither an earthly carpet, nor gems terrestrial
Nor am I confined to Creation, nor the Throne Celestial

Not of ancient promises, nor of future prophecy
Not of hellish anguish, nor of paradisic ecstasy
Neither the progeny of Adam, nor Eve
Nor of the world of heavenly make-believe

My place is the no-place
My image is without face
Neither of body nor the soul
I am of the Divine Whole.

I eliminated duality with joyous laughter
Saw the unity of here and the hereafter
Unity is what I sing, unity is what I speak
Unity is what I know, unity is what I seek

Intoxicated from the chalice of Love
I have lost both worlds below and above
Sole destiny that comes to me
Licentious mendicity

In my whole life, even if once
Forgot His name even per chance
For that hour spent, for such moment
I’d give my life, and thus repent

Beloved Master, Shams-e Tabrizi
In this world with Love I’m so drunk
The path of Love isn’t easy
I am shipwrecked and must be sunk.

Hi Massoud,

     I found Coleman Barks' website and e-mailed him for Farsi version of "Only Breath". I think Coleman Barks should know the Farsi version 'cause he translated the poem. //www.colemanbarks.com/

I also e-mailed a lady in Tehran asking for the same thing. This lady writes articles for Payvand, she e-mails me once awhile to read her articles.

Thank you for your blog with poem video and I am reading Rumi's works now. I will post more stuff here shortly!

Is this video OK for your blog?

Hi! Massoud,

    Thank you for your blog and I really like the topic. I have bookmarked many Rumi's websites and your blog gives me the chance to read more of his great poems. I like "Only Breath" a lot, but I can't find the Farsi version. If I get lucky and find the Farsi version, I will definitely post it here. I played the video this morning, it is great! The calligraphy is very appealing and better than previous videos. I need to play the video more and get the hang of it! Thank God it is Friday. I will read more and post more stuff here this weekend! This is a fun blog! I am sure I will discover more interesting stuff!

thanks,

Please thank your friend for recording your poems!

According to Molana (In Masnavi)

by masoudA on

God has created there kinds of creatures.

1- Those who are born connected and will die connected.  He calls them Fereshtegan

2- Those who spend a whole life of connect and disconnect.  Disconnection coming from greed and instant cravings of soul and body.

3- Those who have no clue what connection is, from birth to death.

Masoud Jaan - I have felt the glory and seen the benefits of being connected - but I have yet to overcome "Havas" - therefore keep getting disconnected.

  Two Kinds of Intelligence

There are two kinds of intelligence: one acquired,
as a child in school memorizes facts and concepts
from books and from what the teacher says,
collecting information from the traditional sciences
as well as from the new sciences.

With such intelligence you rise in the world.
You get ranked ahead or behind others
in regard to your competence in retaining
information. You stroll with this intelligence
in and out of fields of knowledge, getting always more
marks on your preserving tablets.

There is another kind of tablet, one
already completed and preserved inside you.
A spring overflowing its springbox. A freshness
in the center of the chest. This other intelligence
does not turn yellow or stagnate. It's fluid,
and it doesn't move from outside to inside
through conduits of plumbing-learning.

This second knowing is a fountainhead
from within you, moving out.

From Essential Rumi
By Coleman Barks A Poem by Rumi
  • ************************************
  • There is a candle in the heart of man, waiting to be kindled.
  • In separation from the Friend, there is a cut waiting to be
  • stitched.
  • O, you who are ignorant of endurance and the burning
  • fire of love----
  • Love comes of its own free will, it can't be learned
  • in any school.

 A Poem by Rumi

Oh!  Supreme Lover!
Let me leave aside my worries.
The flowers are blooming
with the exultation of your Spirit.

By Allah!
I long to escape the prison of my ego
and lose myself
in the mountains and the desert.

These sad and lonely people tire me.
I long to revel in the drunken frenzy of your love
and feel the strength of Rustam in my hands.

I'm sick of mortal kings.
I long to see your light.
With lamps in hand
the sheikhs and mullahs roam
the dark alleys of these towns
not finding what they seek.

You are the Essence of the Essence,
The intoxication of Love.
I long to sing your praises
but stand mute
with the agony of wishing in my heart.

Yolanda, Thanks for the videos and poems - I want you to know that the poem 'Only Breath' is the foundation and backbone of all Sufism and Mysticism :) I am going to re-post it here again - If you have the Farsi version, please post it also:

A poem

By Rumi

  • All through eternity
  • Beauty unveils His exquisite form
  • in the solitude of nothingness;
  • He holds a mirror to His Face
  • and beholds His own beauty.
  • he is the knower and the known,
  • the seer and the seen;
  • No eye but His own
  • has ever looked upon this Universe.
  • His every quality finds an expression:
  • Eternity becomes the verdant field of Time and Space;
  • Love, the life-giving garden of this world.
  • Every branch and leaf and fruit
  • Reveals an aspect of His perfection-
  • They cypress give hint of His majesty,
  • The rose gives tidings of His beauty.
  • Whenever Beauty looks,
  • Love is also there;
  • Whenever beauty shows a rosy cheek
  • Love lights Her fire from that flame.
  • When beauty dwells in the dark folds of night
  • Love comes and finds a heart
  • entangled in tresses.
  • Beauty and Love are as body and soul.
  • Beauty is the mine, Love is the diamond.
  • They have together
  • since the beginning of time-
  • Side by side, step by step.

            A Poem

            by Rumi

    • "I am only the house of your beloved,

    • not the beloved herself:
    • true love is for the treasure,
    • not for the coffer that contains it."
    • The real beloved is that one who is unique,
    • who is your beginning and your end.
    • When you find that one,
    • you'll no longer expect anything else:
    • that is both the manifest and the mystery.
    • That one is the lord of states of feeling,
    • dependent on none;
    • month and year are slaves to that moon.
    • When he bids the "state,"
    • it does His bidding;
    • when that one wills, bodies become spirit.
