Several top commanders in Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards have been killed in a suicide bombing in the volatile south-east of the country.
Iranian state television said 31 people died in the attack, in the Pishin region of Sistan-Baluchistan, and more than 25 were injured.
Shia and Sunni tribal leaders were also killed. A Sunni resistance group, Jundullah, said they carried it out.
President Mahmoud Ahmandinejad said the criminals would be punished.

Daruis, I did not say that you approved such terrorism...
by Ostaad on Sun Oct 18, 2009 01:19 PM PDTI just thought your Smart Tile was too "clever" ;<{)
Obviously the targets were not only the guard but those local people who were meeting with them either as well as the by-standers.
I'm glad you alluded to the fact that "separatist activism" existed during the Shah too. The diff is no one had deposited $400 mil in the bank to arm, train and egg them on to blow up people.
I agree with you on the shoddy treatment the Sunnis and other religious minorities have received from the IRI despots. But there's more than just discrimination and oppression. This level of terrorism is the result of Iran's enemies, the mainly the Brits and the US government, efforts to kill people in Iran with some remote hope to destabilize the country.
The fact the regime did not name Israel as a culprit indicates some degree of intel behind their announcement who was the real support behind this kind of terrorism in Iran.
Ostaad. The attack may force regime to compromise elsewhere
by FG on Sun Oct 18, 2009 12:52 PM PDTIn response to my own news post on the Guard killings, you argue that the regime will use the killings as an excuse to crackdown further on the protestors. There are good reasons for reaching the opposite conclusion if the regime finally shows sense. The last thing it needs is to bring about an alliance among its growing number of enemies.
I argue these points in some detail. So see my response there. Meanwhle, whatever I think the Iranian people will gloat. After all the Guard was formed primarily for use against people inside Iran and its bruatal policies--along with constant clamor for more reformer blood-- have made it indelibly hated.
Thanks.
Ostaad Where did you Read that I approved these Assassinations ?
by Darius Kadivar on Sun Oct 18, 2009 11:45 AM PDTAll the more that I am not certain of the aim behind these attacks which could even be triggered to encourage separatist movements in Baluchestan.
But the Islamic Republic is simply collecting what it has sown in the country through it's own mismanagement and regular provocations be it in Baluchestan or Kurdistan or other frontier provinces.
By Abolishing the Monarchy in Iran, the Republic YOU Guys put in place has jeapodized the country's unity and identity under One Crown and institution respected by all the various ethnic groups.
YOU Guys destroyed the much necessary UNITY that maintained Iran together and now its the Nation as a Whole which is threatened by such separatist actions because of the way YOU Guys humiliated these tribes dignity in the name of Religion. Just like Cromwell with the Irish ...
Were We still a Monarchy these separatist activisms would not have taken such a radical turn as they do today, because All Iranian tribes and ethnic groups felt that they belonged to one community and were loyal to one Flag.
Blame YOUR Khomeiny and his regimes successive Presidents Irresponsible policies for this CURRENT MESS !

I'm sorry that you are sticking to the British headlines because there were many more people, who were neither commanders nor part of the IRI regime who were killed too. But I don't think you have the ability to go that deep. You're happy to noshkhaar whatever the Brits say, as always.
Terror begets terror, period.
31 less murderors who would have had to be brought to justice
by mahmoudg on Sun Oct 18, 2009 09:51 AM PDTLess stress on the future criminal human right courts which would have been conveened to bring these dead commanders to Justice. Instead it would concentrate on the rest of the commanding elite, and the likes of Janati, Yazdi, Larijani, et al. "Akhondism" in Iran is dying and they are shaking in their worthless "naaeleyns".
