MANI

INTERVIEW
Siamak Ghahremani Co-Founder and Director of Noor Film Festival
Today, Iranians in diaspora hold amongst themselves world-renown scholars, filmmakers, painters, and entertainers, and our community continues to raise the bar on our expectations of our artists, our community leaders, and ourselves. It is exactly in such a vein that the blossoming of events such as the annual Noor Film Festival becomes significant to our community. As the fifth annual Noor Film Festival gears up to open in Los Angeles on Friday, August 3, I had a chance to talk to Siamak Ghahrehmani

“Nationalisms a form of incest, is our idoratary, is our insanity
Nationalism, ethnocentricity, and ethno-nationalism is an integral part of the “Iranian-ness,” particularly of those who still have their umbilical cord connected to the Mother-Persia of glorious Korush days and glorious past. A potentially dangerous blinding connection that constantly feed us the feeling good juice of هنر نزد ایرانیان است و بس under the influence of this ether, we rarely have opened our eyes

NOVEL
Masoud Behnoud's richly woven Iranian novel
Masoud Behnoud's epic novel encapsulates the massive upheavals of the first half of the twentieth century, including the Second World War and the terrorist attacks of 9/11, from a point of view that the English-speaking readership rarely glimpses. The book’s heroine, Kahnoum, is born in the courts of Persia’s Qajar Dynasty in 1900, but is forced to leave the comfort of her aristocratic home and flee for Europe during the Constitutional Revolution of 1906

Journey of an Iranian Immigrant Family
by Mitra K. Shavarini
Within
Desert Roots lies my quest to understand my father’s decision to return to Iran—the whys, the hows—which ultimately led me to trace our family history. The story is of a uniquely Iranian experience—of the home culture, of rootedness, and of exile. It is a story of Iran beyond the Revolution, beyond politics—the story of an Iranian family whose tradition of endurance reaches back centuries. It is a story I hope my children will pass on to theirs

AUSCHWITZ
In preparation for harsh experiences we brace ourselves, but no amount of bracing could have prepared me for a visit to Auschwitz. I thought I had seen enough films on the concentration camps, that I had read enough books about Holocaust. But Auschwitz is like cancer; you think you know enough about it, but only after facing its harsh reality do you realize how little you knew. The views of the countryside around Krakow are breathtaking
