Piano Man by Billy Joel

Billy Joel came on to the music scene with a bang when he released "Piano Man" which became a major hit.  In fact it was his first hit and it was, IMHO, the best of all of the Billy Joel songs.  If you have ever played the club circuit, or if you have ever chronically hung out in clubs, you will recognize the "happy/sad" sound.  Listen carefully to the words:

You are right.  Billy Joel is one of the great pianists of all time in pop music.  Even in the simple song piano man the left hand part has a nice step similar to a walking bass as opposed to the typical one or two note action you typically see in rock music.  It is apparent to anyone who studies his music that he was classically trained.

Lyrics about the tragic limitations of life

The Piano Man touches on themes not normally found in pop songs - melancholy and giving a grim picture of life.

Strangely, Billy Joel has been suddenly attacked by a columnist in the star rated internet zine Slate. They have an article accusing him of being the worst, of the worst, popular singers. Such rubbish.

Don:

You will be amused to know that the very next song I was planning to post was "American Pie."  If you are the "Don McLean" it is great to have you here and if not, it is still great to have a fellow student of the arts.  :)
