Was this song about Buddy Holly or was there an another subtle meaning?  I suppose only Don can tell us.  I have always heard it was about Buddy Holly but when I listen I hear another meaning which is a story about John F. Kennedy.  I have always wanted to ask Don if JFK came into his thoughts when he tossed the lyrics about in his mind.  :)

Wow, you are the only other person who I have heard say it might be about the Kennedys.  You are right, it would really be more about Jacqueline than John but I have always thought about the Kennedys when I heard it.  When you go to Don McLean's site you see references to Buddy Holly so I suspect that the primary idea was Holly, but it could so easily fit the Kennedys as well.

I used to love that song!!

and knew it word for word..... like you do when your  kid! I always thought it was about Jaqueline Kennedy???? I was probably wrong and have just lived under that assumption for all these years.

i don't think any other song has captured the attention of kids like this one did in the early 70's.  you heard it EVERYWHERE.  everyone knew the words.  at every party... at the beach... just driving down the road you'd hear it blasting away.  it did start out about buddy holly and then encaptured the next ten years.  i remember one verse was a reference/take off on bob dylans "like a rolling stone".  it spoke of virtually everything important going on... the war, the death of janis joplin... the beatles... and the end was a reference to altamont freeway.  god.  i could go on and on about this song.

thank you thank you thank you
