According to news received from Sanandaj Prison there has been no news about Ms. Hana Abdi and Ms. Ronak Safarzadeh’s health and well being in the past seven (7) days.

Due to the lack of news from these two women’s rights activists their families had gone to the Sanandaj Prison on Saturday October 4th in order to get news regarding their health and well being, however they were informed that the prison officials had decided to cut all contact between these two activists and their families for 3 weeks. There has been no explanation about the reason behind this situation.

The sudden stop of all communication between Ms. Abdi and Ms. Safarzadeh has caused great concern for the families of these two women’s rights activists.

These two activists are currently on a hunger strike and there is a great possibility that they have been taken to solitary confinement where they may face torture.

Ms. Ronak Safarzadeh was arrested in October 9th 2007 and spent months in solitary confinement in the detention centre of Ministry of Intelligence where she was tortured. Currently the status of her case is unknown.

Ms. Hana Abdi (22) who is a psychology student was arrested in November of 2007. She was taken to the detention centre of the Ministry of Intelligence in the city of Sanandaj where she spent months in solitary confinement and was tortured. She was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment on May 28th 2008.

There are numerous other female activists in Islamic Regime Prisons. Some of these individuals are Ms. Fatemeh Goftari, Shahla Zarinfar, Shahnaz Keypour, Zahra Osdipour Gonji, and Fatemeh Joushan.

The Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran condemn the fact that the Islamic Regime Officials will not allow the families of these prisoners to communicate with them or get news about their health and well being. Human Rights Activists in Iran are also alerting the international community about the fact that these activists are facing torture and ask all human rights organizations to act immediately to help free all political prisoners and in particular female political prisoners.
