Deadly blast strikes Iran mosque: Negligence or Terrorism?

"Ten people have been killed and 160 wounded in an explosion at a mosque in southern Iran, local media reports say.

Authorities in the city of Shiraz were investigating the blast, which some early reports had blamed on a bomb.

But a local police chief told Fars news agency that he had ruled out sabotage, and that "negligence" involving old war munitions might be the cause.

The explosion occurred at around 2100 (1630 GMT) on Saturday and was heard a mile (1.5km) away, the agency reported. "The incident could have happened as a result of negligence. A while ago at this site there was an exhibition commemorating the [1980-1988] Iran-Iraq war," Commander Ali Moayeri, police chief of Fars province, told Fars news agency."

"Most of those inside the Hoseyniyeh Shohada mosque when the explosion took place were young boys and girls affiliated to the Rahpoyan-e Vesal Association, which "holds weekly meetings every Saturday regarding misguided groups, including Wahhabis and Bahais", Fars said."

"The last major bombing, in the south-eastern city of Zahedan in February last year, is believed to have been carried out by the Sunni Baluchi militant group, Jundallah."

I am sure you do not care.

Yes they preach against bahai's there every week ,but LISTEN YOU SMALL MAN, they have raped and killed bahai girls in shiraz and we did not touch anyone why would  we kill anyone when it is forbiden (Haram) for us to commit murder.

You have to answer to Rassole Akram ,for spreading hate .

Bahram I hope you are aware that you are making irresponsible speculations and putting the innocent lives on harms way.

After all there are many uniformed people waiting for excuses to spill the blood of innocent so that they can go to heaven.

Bahais have explicit teachings and mandate regarding the prohibition of violence.
They have been persecuted from the time the Bahai faith was born in iran up untill today and have 160years history of peaceful, non violent coexistant under very unfavorable conditions, PROVEN.

You can not apply violence to ignorance, it just does not work.
Maybe one day the rule of law reins over Iran and the law will deal with the violent and the hateful!
You never know!

According to Peik net, a site close to the Tudeh Party and IRI's reformist factions, two Sunni seniors (Mulavi) were hanged in Zahedan's prison last Wednesday. They were charged with relation to the Sunni rebel group of Jundallah.

The group, or any other, has not taken responsibility for the incident in this mosque which has been rather a place close to Hojattyeh sect to preach of hate against Bahais, Wahabbis, and other faiths and political issues.

Thank you very much YekOYek

Thank you very much YekOYek for your info. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what exactly happened and whether anyone will claim responsibility. We certainly can't put our faith in the authorities as they're far more likely to scapegoat a bunch of innocents instead of catching the culprits who committed this heinous act (if indeed it was an act of terrorism and not 'negligence' which sounds rather implausible to me) which indiscriminately killed civilians.  Thanks again, Sadegh.

RE: BLAST IN SHIRAZ, IRAN

by YekOYek on

When I heard about the bombing/blast in Shiraz on the BBC news as soon as it was reported, my husband rang his relatives who live in various areas of Shiraz, and they didn't even know anything had happened at all, and heard nothing eventhough some of them definitely live within 1.5 km of the area.

As usual the Iranian media is obviously not very accurate/honest and I presume that it has something to do with the upcoming elections on 25th April 2008.  I believe it was a bomb because apparently it was at the front of the mosque, maybe it was one of the south-eastern iranian Sunni factions as you say, or who knows an Iraqi dissident (poss American involvement), we will probably never know the truth!

I discovered this site because I was looking for information on the blast, and I was surprised that it took so long for this story to reach Iranian.com.

Thank you Sadegh for being the first person to accurately blog this horrible blast/bomb.
