Cost-of-Progress

Unions

by Cost-of-Progress on

Indeed the demand of workers in countries such as Iran or China are much more basic - and needed - than those in developed countries.

I have worked in unionized plants for over 20 years now in heavy industrial operations. Speaking ONLY for the western style unions, I can tell you that while the basic idea behind the Unions were sound and in the begining paved the way for equality and justice in the work place, today's unions are mainly about keeping the status quo, i.e.,  maintain that 30% overtime rate and asking more and more of some businesses that simply cannot afford it.

I am not bashing them, just stating what I've seen as I've been involved in some negotiations also. Some argue that unions played a role in exporting jobs to places like China and India as they kept demanding more and more. I do not agree with that completely as there are multitude of other factors involved, however, unions like UAW, International Brotherhood of Chemical Workers and Steel Workers are some of the more powerful and influential unions in the country and they do mingle in politics as well. So, they have some muscle which they flex from time to time.

One can debate the ideological and philosophical aspects of labor unions, but I strongly agree that in societies where equality is non-existent, such unions are pivitol in making life sustainable for millions of workers who would otherwise have to rely on the mercy of their bosses and business owners for fair wages and working conditions. Among the fundamental rights is the one that demands a safe working environemnt - A MUST, which often is ignored and neglected by many entities; owners and operators alike.

BTW, Chinese-owned mines in Africa are one of the latest cases of worker abuse reported. see the link below:

Thanks MM for the ICEM link,

" Reports suggest over 70% of Iranian workers are employed on temporary contracts, with no job security. Many other shocking abuses are reported, from poverty wages often beneath the low minimum wage, non-payment of salaries for up to 18 months, extremely dangerous working conditions, and little to no legislative protections."

AO: You and COP are right, organised labour strikes in support of clear political aims are the key to success.

COP: I worked in a unionised industry for about three years, immediately after finishing my studies in Europe, before moving to US. I was a Union member then (I still am member of the same union by choice,  although as you guessed correctly where I work in US, the mere mention of the word "union" would no doubt create issues long term at work). All our benefits then were collectively bargained through our union reps. That included annual pay increases (same percentage, for all employees, regardless of rank), sick pay, bonus, etc. But the demands of Iranian workers are much more basic. they revolve around just getting paid regularly and job safety.

"Personal business must yield to collective interest."

The Free Union of Iranian

The Free Union of Iranian Workers reports that on the seventh day of the strike, three oil workers were summoned to the security office and immediately put under arrest.

Thanks for bringing their plight to light RG

Like COP said, we need more of those strikes.

This kind of Strike is what's needed

on a grand scale. More power to them.

By the way, roozbeh jaan, I am curious if you have ever worked in a union environment in the US. I am talking heavy industrial environment with national unions.
