The Will of Vahshi Bafghi

On my dying day,
whoever wails, move them away from me,
and far!
With grape wine,
get them drunk and waste them all

Wages of my mortician,
pay him with plenty of wine
Intoxicate him drunk out of every place,
give him his wasted share

Don’t let preachers come to my grave
Let the old tavern-patron read ode from Hafez

Instead of empathy,
play daf above my head
Let a witness dance,
the rest of you clap your hands

On my dying day,
tear up center of my chest
Inside my heart,
plant a cutting of vine

On my grave,
write, “The Loyal has Departed”
He, the tormented,
left the world exhausted

Footnote: The above poem, including its title as used here, has appeared online several thousands times.  It is widely claimed to be that of Vahshi Bafghi's; a claim that is passionately disputed by others.

The imlication

by Multiple Personality Disorder on

Although in this blog I have never, ever, said this poem was written by Vahshi Bafghi, allusion of it is all over the place.  So, to clarify, at a later time, I will add a footnote at the end of the translation.

Where is the proof? It is within itself.

by Multiple Personality Disorder on

By searching online, I could not find any proof who wrote this poem.  But, it should be very easy for a Persian literature scholar to do so, since Vahshi Bafghi lived in the 16th century, and Ali Asghar Vafadar is supposed to be a contemporary poet; although I can't find much about him online either

Either way, I don't care.  In my opinion, this poem is not

(as claimed here)

which means nonsense, trashy, and meaningless, as it is claimed by Seyed Mehdi Mousavi, a pharmacist, just kidding!  He is a contemporary Persian literature scholar and a pharmacist.  But regardless of what he says, this poem is very powerful and profound.  Whoever reads this poem seems to be moved by it.  I think poetry is a highly interpretive art form.  Regardless of who wrote this poem, I was moved by it, and I translated it in that vein

Thank you, MPD,

It is all my fault.......I did not read precisely! So AN stayed away from the wine and drinking poem and read the sober poem instead! :O)

I am a teetotaler myself, but I kindly of like the imagery of this poem!

Wikipedia has an entry for Vahshi Bafghi...he must be good!

Ari's version of Natalie Portman's bio is fun, too. It reminds me of my culture that education is highly valued, just like Iranian culture!

Thank you for your blogs and posts!

Hi Yolanda,

by Multiple Personality Disorder on

Thank you for your comment, and for showing interest in my satirical comment about Natalie Portman elsewhere.

To clarify, I did not say that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recited the above poem in that ceremony that I provided a link.  I said, "...Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recitation of one of Vahshi Bafghi's poems..."  He recited a different poem than this one, beginning at minute 8:00.

Beautiful translation!

I hear you though. It was perturbing to hear our beloved poets recited by Vahshi Vaaghe ee.

Here comes the Poet

by All-Iranians on

Dear MPD thank you for your response. As Dr Saadat Nouri wrote the poem may be written by Mr Vafadar, and most likely by Ali Asghar Vafadar: //elma.ir/?p=688 Thanks also go to Dr Nouri for his supportive comment.

Hi! MPD, Thank you for translating this poetic will. The poem has an interesting theme: wine, vine, drunk! It reminds me of Khayyam's poetry a lot! I am surprised that AN recited this poem. I thought AN is a devout Muslim and a teetotaler! Well, maybe he does not drink this life, but love to drink next life?

P.S. 2 days ago, I read bio of Natalie Portman written by you....it cracked me up big time :O))

I like the version by Ari also....

Dear MPD

by M. Saadat Noury on

به این پیوند هم نگاه کنید //bahal14.persianblog.ir

Thank you for your comment.  I will Google Search for the authenticity of this poem at a later time, meanwhile, do you, or anyone else out there, have any other information about this poem not being written by Vahshi Bafghi?  Could you provide a link?

Dear MPD You got an excellent translation & thank you for sharing, but this will and the poem are not written by Vahshi.

PS: Since it may be removed from the Features, please do not edit this blog now. You may make a notice on the comment section.

Nazy Kaviani

One of the most beautiful Persian poems

by Nazy Kaviani on

This is quite possibly one of the most beautiful Persian poems I have ever read, mostly because of the hope and spirit it offers. You cannot read this poem and get sad, because even if it is written about a time when the poet will no longer be around, it is full of celebration of life.

You did such a poignant job of translating this poem, MPD. It is a particularly dazzling poem you picked this time. Thank you.
