I had never been on a diet before. My family has a history of high cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. so I always watch what I eat and take regular exercise one to two months before my annual check-up. This is to prevent my doctor from rolling his eyes and telling me all the things I know I should be doing. It is not that I do not appreciate the value of health. It is just that there are so many obstacles on my road to a healthy life-style: will-power, discipline, restraint, maturity, ...
Recently, I was invited to perform in a great event. I was utterly delighted until I tried to get into my outfit and rehearse. I was shocked. I took a moment to review what had gone wrong after my physical. I had devised a good plan of exercise which over time had turned into a detailed, consistent plan of procrastination. Well, there was not any time for regret. I had to think fast. I remembered vaguely my friend telling me that her husband had to lose a great deal of weight before an operation, and he did it via one week of cabbage soup diet. I thought a bit and remembered that my sister also had told me about it. Not that I was not listening to them when they were talking to me (I have been losing friends since I started this blog), but my brain shuts off automatically every time I hear the word diet. Anyway, I looked it up on the internet, found it and got on with it.
How did it go? To my surprise, it went much better than I thought. The most difficult day was the one with only vegetables as I get low on sugar really fast and go light-headed. Beyond that, I felt better than I had in years. Very light, energetic, not sleepy during the day even though I did not increase my caffeine intake.
Did I lose weight? I don't know as I never weigh myself. I gather what could the balance tell me that the mirror or my outfits could not? But I did fit comfortably into my outfit so I guess the diet worked. I am thinking to do it some time, for a shorter period of time than one week, just to feel so good and healthy. Perhaps I just do it before my annual exam.
So for those who cannot fit into their outfits (and not because the dry cleaner has shrunk their clothes), this may be a choice. Of course, the other option is to buy new clothes. But I don't like shopping; so that will be my last option. And before you go, because you may want to try this diet at some point, I feel that I have to tell you things that I normally wouldn't tell you:
confession 1: I cheated on the first day
confession 2: I cheated on the second day
confession 3: I cheated on the third day
confession 4: I slightly cheated on the fourth day
confession 6: I discontinued the diet on this day as I fitted well into my outfit.
BUT none of them were big time cheating! Just tiny little ones to make it fun as "I resist anything but the temptation"! OK, I don't have a lot of will power. You don't have to rub it in. Let's see how you get on with this diet!

by msabaye on Sun Oct 25, 2009 11:48 AM PDTThanks. You have a great eye for food! How did you recognize the "cookoo"?!! I am impressed. There is also Salad Shirazi! Wouldn't it be great if somebody invented a diet like that? I would go on such a diet with heart and soul and stick to it forever.

Cabbage soup is the only diet I've ever tried. I was actually forced into it by a friend of mine who didn't want to go about it all by herself. Of course when she wasn't watching, I cheated too. It's amazing how you miss chewable candy when you're on a soup diet!
I am not sure if I lost any weight then, to be fair I didn't follow through for the entire week either, but you're right, I felt good. I can't imagine anyone feeling that good on less healthy ones like Atkins diet.
You write well and thanks for the tip! I might try that a couple of weeks before my physical too :o)
