This is the third year without gold fish on our Haft-Sin table.

Taking a break at work, I just checked out the front page of the latest IranDokht website. I found this editorial that I thought some of you may be interested in: irandokht.com

***

We are spreading a message to Iranians, Tajiks, Afghans, and others to join us in not using a "goldfish," at their Haft Sin table. Our Nowruz celebration will begin soon and it is beautiful time of the year which represents our identity. However, not having a goldfish will not diminish the importance of Haft Sin.

It is important to keep our good traditions and modify or eliminate the ones that are harmful to people, animals, and to the environment.

If you and your family members must add a goldfish (mahi ghermez) to your Haft Sin table please follow the steps below which are prepared by The Center for Animal Lovers in Iran.

- If you are buying a goldfish, purchase it from locations which have large containers and the containers' water is clean.

- The container which you use must be large (preferably glass) and have also a large opening for good air circulation.

- The container must be away from very cold or very hot locations (and it definitely must be away from direct sunlight.)

- If you want to change the water, have fresh water wait for at least 24 hours in another container then gently transfer the new water.

- To prevent the goldfish from feeling lonely and frightened, always use more than one fish, preferably two.

- Have a plan to release the fish safely after Nowruz celebration.

Some family members, relatives, and friends are accepting not having a goldfish at their Haft Sin table for the first time. Several family members and friends have difficulty accepting it that is why I am writing to seek your help.

The Center for Animal Lovers in Iran promotes kindness not only to a goldfish but to all animals.

Happy Nowruz

as for goldfish don't worry after both my 4.5 yr old goldfishies died a few years ago, I decided I would never buy any more of them. This year I don't even have a 7-sin because I am going away for Norouz... so the goldfish population in southern california is safe

:o)

Oh my dear! I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to take your breath away... :-)

I have to confess that I am not very "khaaneh daar"!!! I always buy my Sabzeh from the Iranian store, because I haven't been able to grow a nice Sabzeh myself!!! But my real problems start when I also forget to water the sabzeh and the hyacinths...so they look kind of old and funny and stink, way before Sizdeh bedar!!

Sorry again, Azarin

What do you mean you buy your HaftSin at Persian deli??!! OK let me take a deep breath....we all buy our HaftSin items from the deli, but we color our eggs individually, arrange our flowers, decorate the table the way WE like it to look this year. Please don't undermine your personal taste and efforts in Nowruz or any other time of the year. Wishing you the happiest Nowruz.

I would like to wish you a very happy Nowruz also. I have read many of your comments in other blogs, and I have always found you sweet, kind, and an overall a nice person. I know that you went to boarding school in Florida as you mentioned in your Valentine Blog. I live in Florida, and by the Beach. If you ever come down here, please say hello!

Since my first Nowruz in France (a long time ago) when all my goldfishes died (i think of overeating :-) I've made my haftsin without a fish...

But I'm not very good with my plants or flowers either. I buy my haftsin from the Iranian store on the last day...otherwise I'd nver be able to have Sabzeh!! I'm too forgetful, or maybe daydreaming too much!

Thanks for the effort! Azarin

Multiple Personality Disorder

I have an empty aquarium that’s longing for fish

by Multiple Personality Disorder on

If anyone wants to donate their Norooz fish instead of discarding them into the sewer or drainage systems I’d gladly take them, if such an arrangement were possible.

Animal Abuse

by MiNeum71 on

I know that many Iranians didn´t know or considere this before, but keeping just one goldfish in an ordinary fishbowl is animal abuse.

Please, please, please buy either at least two fishes AND a big aquaria or just let them be.
