ACT: New amendment to sanctions will make it easier for Persepolis tablets to be looted

ACT: New amendment to sanctions will make it easier for Persepolis tablets to be looted

Whether you are for or against the sanctions on Iran, if of Iranian heritage, you need to be for saving our Persepolis tablets (See, e.g., THE IRANIAN: Achaemenid tablets, Matthew W. Stolper, PERSEPOLIS ELAMITE TABLETS - (The Circle of Ancient Iranian ...) which are the subject of lawsuits brought by American-Israeli victims of terrorist bombings in Israel.  These court cases are on-going in the US courts now.  The legal efforts by the Iranian-American organizations have so far blocked looting of the only evidence we have of the daily activities/lives of the Achaemenid folks ca. 2500 years ago.  However, an amendment was introduced, by Senator Menendez (D-NJ) to the Iran sanctions that will make it easy for the courts to award the plaintiffs with our heritage.

Take action, now:

NIAC: Save the Persepolis Tablets!

OK, you hate NIAC?  Fine.... Even if you do not want to go thru NIAC, then write separately to your representaive/senator/the white house about this issue:

Contact Elected Officials | USA.gov

What is the alternative?  Don't do anything, and bid on a piece of the Persian artifacts on ebay!

That is an excellent positiOn to hold. Many of us do what you hold sacred in other sites, but that does not mean that we should lay down and take it just because these are inanimate objects.  As a matter of fact, I would argue that  besides the Greek historian accounts, these are the only historical documents that define us in that part of our history, and we should preserve them for the next generations.

MM: I happen to care more about people than Tablets, period.

Does NIAC?

Also the cynic inside is telling me that it is customary to use Persepolis, Cyrus and his cylinder to rally people behind your message only when you are actually ruling Iran.....

The grapevine also buzzes with talk of some artifacts (?) being destroyed in order to increase the value of the rest.  But you are right in this issue something that most Iranians agree on and could be the start of a hambastegi.

Thanks MM

I'm hopeful that with enough teamwork we can secure  this part of our Achaemenid heritage against the auction block. I hear through the grapewine that some of the victims in this lawsuit aren't too happy about the collection method either. Stuff of tragedies!

You said it, though. National heritage should not become political football.

Do have an alternative for saving these artifacts?

There has been letters of support for Iranian-Americans held in Iran, but for what you ask there is gotta be a vigil every 8 hours.  And. I think there are better venues for that , even here on IC.  And, we are also guilty of y delhi c on this issue since as you know, the prisoner of the day contributors (regularly) are you and  Mehrdad for the most part while BS blogs get numerous hits and  comments..

Nonetheless, Id you have a suggestion. Please forward it so.

Has NIAC ever launched a similar campaign to save the life of a political prisoner about to be executed in Iran? ???

Here is "to be executed of the day" for NIAC brothers and sisters to get statrted.......

Thanks for posting examples of the destruction of the Iranian heritage sites.

In the past, NIAC has condemned the actions of the IRI, but not long and/or harsh enough according to a person/group's likings.  As an American organization, NIAC is more effective when dealing with the American establishment, rather than banging on the pulpit against the IRI deaf ears.

But, this blog is not about NIAC, but saving of the Persepolis tablets.  If someone has a better idea, I am all ears.

The political matters dealing with the giving away of the Iranian natural resources, like oil, are out of the hands of the regular Iranian Diaspora, unless we get united under a common theme.  And, while trying to unite, I have seen how Iranian factions turn against each other to make a mockery of the whole process.

However, what happens to the Persepolis Tablets is in our (Iranian-American) partial control thru the American political system as well as fighting in the courts.  By uniting against the giving away of our heritage, we can also learn to work with each other rather than against.

And finally, truthfully, I would rather offer these IRI officials to eat their oil-fill and get the heck out of DodgeCity.  But, I know that by doing so, another despot will rise and want his/her share.

OI: While I appalaud NIAC for spearheading this theft of Iranian national heritage, I would like them to show the same leadership in holding the IRI accountable for plundering and auctioning off Iran's most valuable natural resources and robbing the future generation of Iranian from prosperity and economic security...

Bahmani - I don't have the millions to buy them back

by MM on

Even if .... wanted to buy them, the University of Chicago would not be able to sell them since the tablets are loaned, and practically owned by the people of Iran, over generations.  And finally, I would not expect the current elite IRI rulers to pay anything since they are too busy filling their pockets abroad.

there are more serious "auctioning off" of our natural resources and wealth in Iran:

If we cared about the Tablets, we'd buy them back!

by bahmani on

A couple of years a go an honest effort to buy the tablets was undertaken by a really cool lady whom I will leave out of what has turned into a classic Iranian mess.

The fact is, we simply don't care.

By we, I of course mean Iranian millionaires. Like most arrogant Iranians I of course, add and include myself among their eliteness, in order to merely validate my desirable demographic in common American company.

It's what I do.

The fact that you'd think one of these folks would plunk down the couple Mill it would take to make this a non issue, and put it up on a dimply lit wall in an Atherton mansion for a few years, until they could donate it (and write it off at 3 times the price!) to a proper museum (like the Louvre where this literally, piece of ancient shit actually belongs!) is simply astounding.

Apparently, there is some sort of nerve damaging chemical in money. Because at least in the Iranian wealthy community, once you go past a million or more in either gross or net worth, it appears to make you retarded.
