Amir Fetanat, an Iranian writer living in Colombia, translated the latest Gabriel Garcia Marquez Book "Memories of My Melancholic Whores" from Spanish to Farsi (Khaterate Roospiane Sodazade Man) in 2005, but did not receive permission from Ershad to publish the book in Iran.

Late October of this year (two years later) the book was translated by another Iranian translator (Kaveh Mirabassai) and published in Iran under a slightly different title but within two weeks the book was BANNED by the Minister of Culture (Ershad) Saffare Hendi. In opposition to this action, Amir Fetanat and Nashre Iran made the book available online for free download and over 40,000 people in Iran and other parts of the world downloaded the book!

On Dec. 19th - Amir Fetanat was nominated for the Linguist of the Year award by Inttranet, (associated with UNESCO) as an Iranian subject to censorship - Please click the link below and vote for him and show your support against censorship in iran!

Reply: The problem with this kind

If you click on the link provided above you will see the list of candidates. In front of each candidate is a link which takes you to a page which has more information on that candidate! So I don't know what you mean by "unilateral information to a particular person". You have access to information about all candidates & by no means is it unilateral!

The problem with this kind

by p o w (not verified) on

The problem with this kind of voting (through the link and unilateral information to a paticular person) is that it does not give chance to the respondant to know about the alternative candidates for understanding the significance of their works. While I do not deny the outstanding action of Mr. Fetanat; potentially there could be other candidates who are more deserved for this vote.
However, I would like to thank you for the information, cause I didn't know there is such an award and there is such an efforts for the translation of Marques's works in Iran in the first place.

RE: have you wondered

How short sighted could someone be?
The point here is fighting against censorship! I am not endorsing the content of the book or anything here, because I haven't even had the time to read the book. But if someone in Iran wants to read the book they should not be punished because of censorship policies in their country. So what we are trying to achieve here is fighting against censorship in Iran.
Mr. Amir Fetanat has been nominated for this award because he is an Iranian translator subject to censorship & not because he has translated a certain book!!!

If a book like this would

by makank on

If a book like this would not be translated to farsi, a whole population would have never been able to read it! given that Marquez is one of our greatest contemporary writers, who's books are taught in universities across the world, making it accessible to a nation which censors books is I think honorable. Although inttra.net is an orginzation for translators and linguists, not writers. please see this article:

Hope you understand now!

A simple answer to your question is that this award is NOT for original authors! The Inttranet™ is a global network of professional interpreters and translators!
"This award recognizes the struggle of linguists who have helped increase public awareness of the importance of linguists and languages during the year." So it recognises the struggle or personal scarifies they have gone through, which in the case of Mr. Fetanat is being subject to censorship.

To: "of whores, gays and lesbians"

by Anonymous123 (not verified) on

Why do you think "whores, gays and lesbians" are not decent? The only indecent subjects are Mollahs, Islamists and YOU.
.
Have a great Xmas.

I don't understand

by Anonymous-who (not verified) on

Why is Mr. Fetanat being awarded for a book he didn't write in the first place? Anyone can translate a book from one language to another. The art of writing is a gift that should be bestowed to the original author of the book, in my opinion.

have you wondered

by of whores, gays and lesbians (not verified) on

that why is that the only news about Iran and Iranians have to do with subversive weapons, gays, lesbians and whores? What happened to descent Iranians, the other silent majority?

The focus of the west is on any Iranians that bashes Islam and anti-Islamic issues discussions, talks about gays, sex, whores and weapons of extra sensations....

Thank you and have a wonderful Christmas.
