Why not write as “Know Rooz”?

نوروز meaning “New Day” is the traditional ancient Iranian festival and also the First Day of the Iranian New Year. It is principally observed and celebrated in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. In recent years, it is mostly referred to as Nowruz in the English literature. It is also spelled as Norouz, Norooz, Narooz, Nawruz, Newroz, Newruz, Nauruz, Nawroz, Noruz, Novruz, Nauroz, Navroz, Naw-Rúz, Nowroj, Navroj, Nevruz, Neyruz, Navruz, Navrez, Nooruz, Nauryz, Nevruz, Nowrouz, and possibly many other forms.
It seems none of those forms are truly representing the First Day of the Iranian New Year. Even some of them like Norouz, Norooz, Nooruz, and so on bring a negativity to this day when it is a time of joy and celebration.

Why not write as “Know Rooz”?

What do you think?

This is a note to express my deepest appreciation to All-Iranians, Bahram Gohari, SamSamIIII, Miss Behave, Tabar, Goltermeh, Ladan Farhangi, Capt_ayhab, and Homan Mohabadi Ebrahimi for their remarkable comments.

And to Pendaar-e Neek, it all depends on your Windows and PC. You may use this link. Hope it works for you.

Ghandehaar is right/Kandehar is wrong AND Nowruz is wrong/Know Rooz is right

Bedan............Know

Many many long years ago, when the Plymouth Rock landed on us the Eyranains, the time that  we were asked, [Where you from you Ayrab or somethin'] in response we said Iran.

A silly dumbfounded hick of a face, wide eyed redneck asked,,,, EYRAN? whr' the heck is that, You Ayrab?

so,

Some of us decided to say what pleased them hicks, and we became Eyranians.

Here we are over quarter a century+10 later and one sheepishly grinning self proclaimed master of linguistics has a suggestion to degrade Iran further. Let us call it KNOW[BEDAN - as them foreigners will read it] rather than calling it  NEW[Noe], Ve have not learneded you lanGOUAge, but Ve tink this is Vat.

My 2 cents anyhow

If I Hurt You, Then I'm Sorry. I have no problem if you prefer Noerooz. I think Ladan Farhangi commented so nice that, "Know Rooz can be read and prounounced more correctly, and it looks beautiful".

re;literary

by SamSamIIII on

Unless the definition of the word "literary" is changed recently or lost on me ,there is nothing literaly perfect about the word "know" that literaly relates & delegates the definition of "Noe" as in "New". & I mean that literaly ;).

How on earth were you able to insert a word written in Persian(Persian font) in your English text without distortion.

Will you be kind enough to share the trick?

Ladan Farhangi

Goltermeh jaan: Gol Gofti!

by Ladan Farhangi on

"Know Rooz" is more correct cause it's phonetically spelled and easier to pronounce.
What's Nowruz or Nowrouz or Nowruzz? NOW as in just this time, right now? and Ruzz? as in rustic, rust, rush?
"Know Rooz" can be read and prounounced more correctly, and it looks beautiful.

goltermeh

Know Rooz, phonetically and literary, seems to be perfect

by goltermeh on

Nowruz or Nowrouz sound NAAROOZ, Norooz or Noerooz each one has a body of negetivism.

Know Rooz, phonetically and literary, seems to be perfect. Thank you for your suggestion.

The holiday is also celebrated in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, East Turkistan, Kurdistan, and Azerbaycan.

Also I'm sorry but I don't understand why we should call it Know Rooz? There are many ways of pronouncing the holiday so let's respect those.

I,m kinda lost in what you are trying to delegate. The word "Noe-rooz" as it is well know, consist of the Persian-IE word "Noe" as in "New" & "Rooz". By writing it as "Know" instead of "Noe" I reckon the phrase loses it,s primery meaning & purpose as a "new" day to a foreign observer.

I am no linguist but personally think the best form to write it would be "NoeRooz"  which doesn,t sound negative neither & incidently you failed to mention :). But guess folks have different tastes & we even have our dear akhoonds who would like to get rid of both words & replace it with "Jadid al yome" .

Cheers,  & Noerooz-etan Pirouz va Behrouz !!!
