Were the Greens Defeated?First, the very fact that on the thirty-first anniversary of the Revolution, the hardliners had to saturate Tehran and other large cities with security forces just to prevent peaceful demonstrations by the opposition represents a significant victory for Green supporters. This is the day when the people are supposed to come out freely and celebrate the establishment of the political system that the hardliners claim they support, and yet there was an unofficial state of emergency, with tens of thousands of security forces patrolling the streets.

I was reminded of the days following September 11, 1973, when Salvador Allende, the socialist president of Chile, was overthrown in a coup planned by the CIA and carried out by the Chilean military. In those days, the capital of Santiago was similarly saturated by the military, people were beaten en masse, thousands were jailed, and many were killed or disappeared. (The 1981 movie Missing, written and directed by Costa-Gavras, recounts these events.)

So, what kind of victory could this represent for the regime? As Mousavi said on January 1, in his statement number 17, addressed to the hardliners,

Suppose through arrests, violence, shutting people’s mouths, and closing newspapers and means of mass communication that calm and silence return to the society. What are you going to do about the fact that people’s judgment of the political establishment has changed? What are you going to do about the destruction of its legitimacy? What are you going to do about the rebukes of the world and its astonishment about the degree of violence that the government has used against its own people? What are you going to do about all the unsolved economic problems that, due to the utter incompetence of the government, continue to worsen? A few points

1. First of all, many arrested young men and women have been raped over the past many months. In addition, in the 1980s, when they wanted to execute young women, they raped them also, as testified by the late Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri. So, anyone denying it is either living in a parallel universe, or is simply making excuses, or lying.

2. Are the rapes still going on? At least I have no idea. But, certainly the fear of being raped exists. Ali Karroubi was arrested on Thursday and was taken to a Masjed. When they recognized him, they separated him from the rest of the arrested people, took him to a secluded corner and threatened to rape him - a 37 years old man with wife and children. Read the open letter by Fatemeh Karroubi, his mother, to Ayatollah Khamenei.

3. Accusing Shirin Ebadi of rescuing the IRI is beyond the pale. The man accuses anyone who does not think like him. I have been a friend of Ebadi's family for over 30 years. If anyone knows what Ebadi thinks and how she views the hardliners, it is me.

Her sister Dr. Noushin Ebadi was arrested ONLY because she is Shirin's sister. Noushin khaanoum and her husband are 100% apolitical. She was released ONLY after she had a heart attack in jail (this has not been taked about in the press) and the hardliners were afraid that she might die in jail. She is only 50 years old.

Shirin's brother Jafar, a friend of over 32 years, has been threatened to be fired from the University of Tehran, where he is a professor of economics. Shirin's husband, Mohandes Tavassolian, has been threatened, his passport has been confiscated, his company has been audited many many times, and their apartment and apartment building have been attacked numerous times just over the past 8 months, not to mention over the past 20 years. When my wife and I call them to see how they are doing, they cannot practically say anything, because their phone is tapped. Shirin has been accused of being a spy for Israel.

So, under such circumstances, accusing Shirin Ebadi of wanting to rescue the IRI is as and repugnant as the accusations of the IRI against the Green Movement. Freddo C knows no limit, and has no shame whatsoever. And, of course, he is a democracy lover.

No entity is more "anti-Iran" than the current regime, which has executed an exponentially greater number of Iranians since its inception than any other government in Iran's recent history; has made a shambles of Iran's economy (the average Iranian's income is about 30% lower than it was in 1976), despite the fact that it has the world's second largest natural gas reserves and third largest oil reserves in the world and has enjoyed periods of very high oil prices (in contrast, the Shah's regime, of whom I am not a supporter, had high oil prices only from 1973-1978; Ahmadinejad's government earned more money from oil revenues in his first few years than Khatami's, whom I do not support either, did in 8 years). But, of course, IRI cyber groupies don't have to worry about the misery, repression, and violence that the IRI has been meting out to Iranians in the past 31 years because they live in the belly of the Great Satan and other strongholds of the decadent West. For some reason, they are content to cheerlead the murdering entity and carry on there cyber romance with the IRI at a distance of several thousand miles and don't seem interested in living under the enlightened, progressive, and prosperous Democratic People's Islamic Republic of Iran.
