After the successful global public screenings in over 40 cities throughout North America and Europe, Iranian Taboo, a documentary by Reza Allamehzadeh WAS broadcast live on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share this important film with global audiences, especially the viewers inside Iran” said the Iranian Taboo director and the producing team. “Our main and only goal in making this film has been to raise awareness and expose the injustice that has taken place for over 150 years against the followers of the Baha’i Faith in Iran; a historical fact that has not been talked about in this format. We thank VOA for accepting our request to broadcast this film” The June 23rd broadcast of Iranian Taboo on VOA INCLUDED a live in-studio interview with the director of the film, Reza Allamehzadeh.

Iranian Taboo tells the story of an Iranian Baha'i woman, Nadereh and her 14-year-old daughter who decide to sell all of their belongings and leave their homeland, to take refuge in the West. Iranian Taboo takes us across continents from Turkey to Israel, and from the U.S. to Iran and gives us a unique insights into the persecution of Baha'is in Iran -from the underground Baha'i University (BIHE) to the oppressed Baha'i peasants of the Eival village in the northern province of Mazandaran. Misconception

by Diya on

Dear Amigo 19, Iran is not the “Holy Land” for the adherents of the Baha’i Faith, explicitly or implicitly appearing in the Writings. This is a misconception.

Bahá'u'lláh, for sure, had a great affection for his native city and exalted Iran in His Writings. For example, He wrote: “Let nothing grieve thee O Land of Tá (Ṭihrán), for God hath chosen thee to be the source of the joy of all mankind.” “Rejoice with great joy, for God hath made thee the Day Spring of His light, inasmuch as within thee was born the Manifestation of His Glory...” The Baha’i Holy Land is non-other than Akka /Haifa in Israel.  Without being from Iran, I too love the country, its people, its history, and its culture.

Dear Shemirani

by stavackoli on

I hope I did not come across as having been offended as we Baha'is, precisely as you state in your post, because of the unrelenting years of misunderstanding, torture, and cruelty, have developed a thick skin and do not get offended that easily.  My issue is not whether you accept my religion or not, it is not about your opinion of it either.  My issue is with the following statement:

"
aparté: The only rule i really don't like in Bahai's faith is that Nationalism is a sin ! Their "leader" didn't make any difference between nationalism (like Hitler ) and Patriotism and  he should distinguish this two notions!!!! I think Patriotism is a beautiful thing, without Great Patriots a Nation can't survive for long ! in Jahanvatani mano koshte makhssosan dar beyn Irania ke Khanashoon dar haal sookhte !"

See? when you refer to our religious tenets and say things that are not true within it, you misrepresent the truth.  There is no such "sin" in the Baha'i Faith.

And as far as the rest of your statement above goes, we tried the pure, unbridled patriotism thing for hundreds of years; the old motto "Cheraghi ke be khaane ravast be masjed haram ast" is ever-increasingly losing its luster (no pun intended).  Why not try a different strategy, if there is a way to use the light in both the house and masjed, why not attempt it? The entire world is in a mess and we think we can fix it by sticking to our past ways, why is that?  If you're trying to unwind a screw by turning it to the left and it does not open, do you not even try once to turn it to the right?  Maybe we should give "Earth is but one country and all people its citizens" a try, what do you think?

Stravoski, thanks for your comment from the start untill we are supposed to love our country .....

after that,  you missunderstood my first comments:

my comment was not an attack !! i can have my opinion about a religion without attacking or judging any of the believers !!!!! (i do the same with others religions questioning and disliking is part of my freedom )

but  Its seems that any word about it  is receiveved like an accusation ! of course you don't have to prouve to me or to anyone else that you are patriots and that you love irani ! why each of you are making a philosophic question so personal !!!!!!

i can understand (a little bit ) that living under persecution for all this years (for generation) may put you on a defensive mode  and also that you all are thirsty for justice!

but to make it very clear: i didn't come to this blog to attack any of you ! i actually watched the documentary and i found it very interesting, it informed me about your situation which really untolerable ! and i also watched careful eival village (i have shomali roots myself) and i didn't know about this village !

there is a gap between us only because  you lived hidden in your own motherland and we wasn't  informed (or negatively informed) about you ! i believe my generation and yours are here to discover about each others to get to know better !

but please you must also realise that there is iranians who doesn't hate you and who considers you part of their compatriots ! i think Bahai's cause is a very fair cause, a very urgent humanitary  cause ! (doesn't mean that i like this religion ! i do like the freedom to choose more than any religion !! )

I read what is written here and despite my better judgement (inasmuch as I really do not want to make this about religion, this should be about Human rights and those of all Iranians, and not just the Baha'is; they are but one example, a glaring one, but nevertheless, only an example of the atrocities that go on everyday in Iran), I decided to clarify one point about the Faith.  Baha'u'llah's statement often misinterpreted by not only non-Baha'is, but also many Baha'is, is, and I paraphrase: one should not take pride in loving his own country, he should take pride in loving the entire world.  We don't go around beating our chests about our loving our country because we believe it is understood that any Iranian, American, Greek, or Venezuelan, loves their country.  If you're a mom and you go around boasting about loving your children, you're playing with a short deck!  You're supposed to love your children.  You're supposed to love your country.  Be pround if you love your neighbor's children or even better, your enemy's children as much as you love yours.  We are patriots, we don't have to prove it to anyone.  Watch the movie, these guys, I myself having escaped 28 years ago now, are proud to call ourselves Iranian.  We never go around calling ourselves Persian because we are ashamed of being Iranian (you know who you are).  We love Iran, we bleed because of Iran, we just don't take "pride" in it; it is in our blood.  There is nothing in the Faith that says patriotism is a sin, please do not misquote things.

amigo i think your comment is a bit out of topic :

i was talking of iranians  not about foreigners (good for you if your parents in law and wife loves iran ! )

A holyland ?!!! because their spiritual leader was born in Iran, i see and if he was born in another place (lets say greece) that place would be the holyland !!!!! so religion is dictating your love for iran (or greece lol) its seems religion is more important than anything else  ! this is very different from patriotism, where nation is coming first no matter the religion you have !

ps: i just saw your profile and all your comments are about bahais ! nothing else matters enghari :) looks very "orthodox" too me !!

anyway i'm too laic  and also too agnostic  to understand people like you but i repeat for the third time Noone should be punished because of his faith !

Faryarm, i never said she

by Shemirani on

Faryarm, i never said she (they) don't love her (their) country actually the film is very heartbreaking and the their love for their motherland is not questionable !

what i said en Aparté :   i don't share the philosophical view : there  is something bigger than a nation !! the international ( jahanvatanii way to see things) and it's my personal opinion not a judgement, i hope you don't take me wrong ! but i see you put few "sooreh " to correct me ! thanks !

anyway, i liked the film, it's important to talk about the horrible situation our compatriots are having just because they have a different religion !

Dear Shemirani..

by faryarm on

Dear Shemirani..

Thank you for your kind comment..

Just to clear up a misunderstanding..

Love of one's country is NOT a "SIN" in Bahai belief.

Just becasue we love our house and home, does it mean that we should care any less for our neighbourhood?

Did you not notice the anguish with which Nadereh spoke of, as she was leaving her homeland?

Did you not hear her say, that she would rather stay despite all the persecution and injustice?
