What would Iran have looked like if Shah had stayed.

Imagine for a moment that somehow Shah would have beaten his cancer in a week and would jet back to Iran to crush the uprisings and put Khomeini on trial and killed as many as it took to put order back in the streets.

It is 1983 and despite the bitter anger that people felt about the mass killings and the blistering UN Human Rights violation reports on Iran that went to Security Council but was vetoed by Ronald Reagan the country has moved on from 1979.

Reza Pahlavi II has come back from Houston with a degree in Liberal Arts and has taken over some causes here and there.  Shah had ordered some reforms and now people can vote for their representatives in Majlis and Senate but the candidates are filtered through a committee appointed by the Shah.

Shah has taken a back from the day to day ruling and spends most of his time building palaces and resorts in various parts of the country.  He starts a project in Gheshm Island to turn it into a mecca for shopping and sporting venues.

Shah dies in 2004 at the age of 85 at the height of the Iraq war and Reza Pahlavi II is coronated in a lavish ceremony and country put on a 3 day holiday to celebrate.  Upon taking power he orders new sets of reforms to change the subsidy plans into voucher plans in order to stabilize the country after Iran's foreign debts become harder to pay.  Riots ensue which he brutally cracks down that surprises observers who thought that a Houston educated man should have responded differently.

He continues to rule by suppressing dissent until 2011 when Arab Spring is in full swing.  USA is pulling out of Iraq and things are all messed up when I suddenly wake up!  I get up and go to the bathroom and say to myself I need to slow down on spicy food at night!

There some differences in our scenarios. In yours, Shah lives to old ages but in mine he dies decades earlier. But main point as you noted,  is that "lot of the things would be the same "

If Shah had stayed Savad-kooh would've become Dr. Kooh!

Anahid jaan I agree a lot of the things would be the same and that's what I've been trying to say.

Everything is sacred

If Shah had stayed, somethings would be similar to now

by Anahid Hojjati on

1. Russia and Iran would be good friends. Even in Shah's time, and although USSR was communist, Russians were in Iran, so after fall of communism, Shah would be happy to have excellent relationships with Russia.

2. Women would constitute high percentage of student population in universities even in science and engineering fields.

3. There could well have been an Iran Iraq war, but it would have ended sooner. US would have hepled Iran and Saddam would stay on until US got rid of him. Lok at timeline of what happened to Saddam after Iraq attacked Kuwait, speed it up by about 10 years. Remmeber that in 1970s, Iran and Iraq had border problems and there were even some battles, although small and Saddam had his own ideas independent of type of regime in Iran.

4. If Shah had stayed, it would have been after he crused people' revolution in 1357. People would be jailed and killed similar to what we had in early 1980s in Iran, just it would have happened few years earlier. A new Shah, Reza Pahlavi, who had come to power after death of Shah from cancer, would gradually free priosners and many would return to normal life.

5. In mid to late 2000s , maybe about 2006, or couple years later, we would have a popular uprising. We had a revolution in 1357, which was about 25 years after 1332 and even with all Dictatorship of IRI, we had 2009 uprising about 30 years after last revolution. So if monarchy had stayed, we would have had another uprising in late part of decade of 2000. Activists would have asked for human rights and freedom for political prisoners...

Just some thoughts

Ahhhhh Defender of Freedom so sorry to see you go... : (

We should make a movie about this, "If Shah had stayed". Of course we'd have to admit at the beginning of the Movie that the bitching and whining would not have disappeared, but then again he was a man not A God, he couldn't change the way Iranians are, he could just give them Freedom & the possibility to change.

P.S. HG, me thought one of our old boys might recall the distinction. Tis new generation don't remember anything.

P.S.S. I still don't belive I'm the only one that remebers (well, vaguely remembers) that Gay weddign in Tehran, it must have been sometimes between 1975-76.

Monarchism is very much alive and Kicking in Iran

by Roozbeh_Gilani on

Iranian monarchist should stop lamenting the "good old days", and praise the "good present days" in Iran. Just ignore the "Republic" bit in the title of the current regime with all that islamic stuff and you have the good old days of Shah and his SAVAK and Evin, this time round with Rahbar and his SAVAMA and same old Evin. As for Cyrus the Aryan and his famous cylinder, just give ahmadinezhad and his Mr. Bean lookalike sidekick a bit of time, and you'll have all that too. And dont forget your "virtual US embassy" either. You see, everything is back to "normal" again.

Enjoy....

by hamsade ghadimi on

mashti, canada dry is preferred because of its neat spiral design.  however, if the bottle is broken according to his majesty's admission to barbara walters, there's no difference.

Mash Ghasem

SAVAK was already serving, cooked egg, Pepsi and Canada Dry

by Mash Ghasem on

in there! Somehow they would force Evin residence to 'enjoy' these items from a different orifice!

BTW, does anyone recall the major difference between the Pepsi and Canda Dry , as far as Evin?!

Didn't we have the very first Public Gay Marriage in Iran, back

by Mash Ghasem on

then before 1979? Some said it was the first of its kind in ME.

If memory serves well, which these days it don't, it was in one of those luxury hotels in Tehran, and  one of the two, was the son of a famous general in the army.

I never realized just how much some of these monarchists miss their GOD.

May Ary Az Mehr be always with you!

amirparvizforsecularmonarchy

We already know that we have gays in Iran today.

by amirparvizforsecularmonarchy on

Some of them are running the prison system for the IRI, just ask the green movement.  They say they had plenty of first hand experience with out consent.  If shah had stayed this could never have happened. Gays could live on the basis of consent and would be free from discrimination like the rest of us.
