Shame on you all
by amirrostam on Mon Jan 07, 2008 02:09 PM PSTReally shame on you all. Of course this is Ferdosi and from Shahnameh. This is part of the letter as others have provided the link for the full letter, from the Iranian commander Rostam e Farrokhzad to his brother, lamenting the fate of Iranians during and after the defeat by Tazi's.
He also laments the division among Iranians, which is a recurring theme in our history.
Amir Rostam
A.4now, thanks for your
by My two pennies' worth (not verified) on Thu Jan 03, 2008 09:43 PM PSTA.4now, thanks for your response. I have a copy of the Baysonghori and also a copy of Moule's (I also have a copy with the old system of block printing which is unique and about over 130 years old). Back to the topic, I will wait for Dick Davis' input (as suggested and initiated by A.Mard) and might add another 1/2 of a penny's worth afterwards.
Dr. Davis Answer
by Abarmard on Thu Jan 03, 2008 08:11 AM PSTDear friends, here is Professor Davis' answer:
Dear Arman,
This is a section of the prophecy by Rostam Pur-e Hormozd from the
closing section of the Shahnameh - just before the Arab invasion. Rostam
Pur-Hormozd (who is not the great mythological Rostam of course, who is long
dead by this time) is the commander of the Iranian armies that are defeated
in the invasion. Before the final battle he writes a letter to his brother
telling him to look after the king (Yazdegerd lll) who is retreating to the
east.In this letter he prophecies the disasters that will befall Iran if the
Arabs win the coming battle (which of course they do). The passage you quote
is from the letter (though it may not be exactly as it is in the best
editions of the poem - as you perhaps know, manuscripts of the Shahnameh can
differ enormously form one another, and some editions have been made from
inferior manuscripts). I'm typing this at work, where I received your
email, and my Shahnamehs are at home, but I will check definitively tonight
and let you know how close the version you have quoted is to the version in
the best editions.
I hope this is of some help.
With all best wishes,
Dick Davis.
Shahnameh
by ahvazi on Thu Jan 03, 2008 07:42 AM PSTI have the complete set and will be looking at it too and let you all know.
I have sent a letter to Professor Davis
by Abarmard on Thu Jan 03, 2008 07:08 AM PSTRachard (Dick) Davis is the translator of Shahnameh into English. He was my professor long ago. I have written him an email and as soon as he responds, I will post his answer here.

I will try to find out
by Daryush on Thu Jan 03, 2008 04:42 AM PSTI have taken this poem from my father’s notes. I will try to find out more about it. Next time I will check more precisely before posting notes here, but I was sure that this was written by Ferdowsi, since my father had told me many times...
The letter
by sz (not verified) on Thu Jan 03, 2008 01:55 AM PSTBesides the two traditional sources that Anonymous4now quotes, there is the Bysonghori copy and others too. Professor Khaleghi-Motlagh in Germany has compared them all and after four decades of intensive research has published a copy of Shahnaheh which many scholars consider the most accurate to date. The Letter in question, Rostam Farokhzad, commander of the Iranian soldiers, to his brother is there. There are disputes about the order of the lines or the authenticity of the single line “ ze sheer shotor….” But nothing has come of it. The successive regimes in Iran since Reza Shah, Ferdowsi mausoleum was built by his order, have tried to accentuate some parts of it and downplay others that don’t agree with their policy.
NOT Ferdosi?
by Jahanshah Javid on Wed Jan 02, 2008 11:59 PM PSTHi Daryush,
Can you check your source? Based on the responses here, it seems like this poem may not be from Ferdosi. It would be good to know for sure. Thanks.
Dear My two pennies' worth
by Anonymous4now (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 09:37 PM PSTI have a copy of Joules moles'(sp?) Shahnameh (said to be the most accurate collection) printed in 1997. Some of Daryush's lines are in a different order than mine but they all agree with the copy I have. There have been two major efforts in the past 200 years, to collect and publish the Shahnameh. One is an effort by the French and the other is the monumental work by the Russians. I have never heard of a copy that had false lines or words added by imposters. In my copy though the lines "ze shireh shotor khordan o soosnmar Arab raa beh jaie residast kar keh taajeh kiaan raa konad arezzo toffoo bar to ay charkheh gardoon toffoo" are conspicuously missing. Sz's lies are all in my copy too, but in a slightly different order than mine. I hope this helps.

the racial part...
by ahvazi on Wed Jan 02, 2008 05:29 PM PSTI think Ferdowsi is not talking about any specific group but rather that the group that will rule Iran will not represent any culture (void of culture) but one that represent the worst of humanity/human character. This is also another one from Ferdowsi.
هنر خوار شد جادویی ارجمند.

For the sake of quoting Ferdosi correctly
by My two pennies' worth (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 05:05 PM PSTThe poem which Daryush posted has lines (couplets) in it which are not by Ferdosi.
The 4 lines that sz posted here, the 2nd and 4th lines were written by Ferdosi. The 1st and 3rd lines (couplets)were added later by some imposter and claimed to be that of Ferdosi's.
If by chance I missed these lines in Ferdosi's Shahnameh which I refuted here, I would apppreciate someone helping by writing where they can be found (be more specific). I have a copy of Shahnameh which was published during the Shah's time and prior to making this comment I went over the entire part for Rostam, and also Yazdgird. (ref: Ferdosi's Shahnameh, under the section and poem "Paadshaahee-e Yazdgird beest o se saal bood", and also under the poem "Naame-e Rostam be baraadarash").

The story of demise of Yazdgerd
by sz (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 03:26 PM PSTYou will find the lines you are interested in the section Ferdowsi laments the Yazdgerd III loss to invading Arabs and it starts with these lines:
چو با تخت منبر برابر شود
همه نام "بوبکر" و "عمٌر" شود
تبه گردد اين رنجهای دراز
شود ناسزا شاه گردن فراز
نه تخت و نه ديهيم بينی نه شهر
ز اختر همه تازيان راست بهر
برنجد یکی دیگری برخورد
به داد و به بخشش کسی ننگرد
Please tell me where in
by Verify, and then confirm (not verified) on Wed Jan 02, 2008 01:59 PM PSTPlease tell me where in Shahnameh this was written by Ferdosi (chapter, page,..)? Or is this a poem attributed to Ferdosi? (like another poem called Yousef & Zoleykhah). I look forward to your response, thanks.

by Jahanshah Javid on Wed Jan 02, 2008 01:22 PM PSTI don't know about the racial part, but he was right about using religion for illegitimate goals ("deen daraarand pish"). Very interesting. Thanks.
