GK: Swords are no longer
by Sargord Pirouz on Sun Jun 27, 2010 11:14 AM PDTGK: Swords are no longer worn by ministers. Responding to one of my inquiries, another Iranian uncle of mine, a retired philosophy professor from France's most prestigious university, told me the thing was European made and he wasn't very impressed by it.
What will the next generation bring? Anybody's guess. But DK and I will be old men, and I'll bet the farm there won't be a monarchy of any sort in place in Iran. (Sorry DK).
Grandpa's lost sword

by Sargord Pirouz on Sun Jun 27, 2010 12:45 AM PDTOut of that generation, I had an uncle who served briefly as Deputy Prime Minister (I believe that's what his title was, not certain about that). He didn't work out. He was actually a celebrated astrophysicist, who was not well adapted for political life. (He actually published a formal proof for one of Einstein's theories as an undergraduate at a US university.)
And my aunt was part of the Iranian delegation at the International Women's Year held at the UN, in 1975.
You know, Darius, looking at those uniforms in the photo, I have to say I prefer the court uniforms of the Reza Shah years. They were austere, by comparison. I also prefer the fez.
I wish I had my grandfather's sword. The family seems to have lost track of it, after my late uncle's passing.
