Niall Ferguson Blasts Barack Obama For Failed Egypt Foreign Policy

On MSNBC as early as Feb 14, 2011 , Harvard History professor Niall Ferguson offered an articulate, detailed, and biting indictment of President Obama's handling of the crisis Egypt. Apparently To Obama's Deaf Ears ...

Niall Ferguson Blasts Barack Obama For Failed Egypt Foreign Policy :

This program came as a follow up to his Newsweek column a day earlier (Read Article Here ) which looked very much like an Open Letter of advice to the US President.

Those disagreeing on the usually Obamaphilic "Morning Joe" panel ( amongst Mika Brzezinski daughter of Zbigniew Brzezinski former national security advisor in Jimmy Carter’s administration) could offer little of substance in response.

Co-host Mika Brzezinski began the segment reading Ferguson's latest column -- which is the latest Newsweek magazine cover story -- and asked him to expound on Egypt, saying that "it actually seems like it went pretty damn well."Perhaps she is referring to the many joyful reports from Tahrir Square amidst jubilant masses, or maybe CBS' Harry Smith doling out kisses to the crowd --but Ferguson offered a more dire assessment of the situation.

"You cannot make the foreign policy of a superpower up as you go along," Ferguson stated. He bludgeoned the Obama administration's slipshod policy, calling it "flip followed by flop followed by flip." He added that "they admitted that they had not planned for this scenario. I find that absolutely astonishing.

Kissinger on Charlie Rose :

"I have supported the Obama administration's foreign policy and I want them to succeed. I'm concerned that there is a danger of confusion... the process by which the change of government that is taking place with the contest that has to take place afterwards.I do not think the administration will be in a position to put itself at thehead of the pro-democratic parade around the world by becoming too involved inthe process of changing the governmental structure in Egypt.
Right now theradical extremist and jihadist forces want somebody to create the jihadist space so they can afterwards pursue their objectives, many of which are against our interests and our values. So in the process of moving toward a democratic system, we should keep in mind there are two separate efforts going on. One --how to guide the process of transformation from where we are to the departure of Mubarak; this is a question of a few months. The second is how to create in that process a structure in which a genuine democratic system can take place. And in which we should have no illusions that we can co-opt all the radical and jihadist forces into the governmental structure in the beginning."

Power has shifted in the direction of political Islam. Mona Eltahawy, who writes about the Islamic world and women's issues, says 60 years of military rule has made it almost impossible to operate in the middle ground, between the regime and the Islamists.

The Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Mursi has been declared the winner of Egypt's presidential election run-off.

He won 51.73% of the vote, beating former PM Ahmed Shafiq, the Higher Presidential Election Commission said.

The head of the panel of judges, Farouq Sultan, said it had upheld some of the 466 complaints by the candidates, but that the election result still stood.

The announcement prompted scenes of jubilation in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where Mr Mursi's supporters gathered.

Jeremy Bowen on the tensions at heart of Cairo's Tahrir Square

by Darius Kadivar on

Braced for conflict (bbc)

Tahrir Square in Cairo does not feel the same as it did during the uprising in January and February that overthrew President Hosni Mubarak.

During that first occupation, the square reflected a country in ferment - full of debate, and uncertainty, and violence; but all of it pivoting around a single, simple demand that Mubarak had to go.

This time round, Egyptians still debate the future passionately, and there is uncertainty, and some terrible violence. But hatred for the old president was the glue that united his opponents, and without it politics here are much more splintered.

When the job was removing the dictator, deciding everything else could be put off.

Now the time has come to make choices, and it is painful.

Egypt power transfer 'speeded up' (bbc)

Egypt's military rulers have agreed to speed up presidential elections, a key demand of protesters packing Cairo's Tahrir Square.

Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, said on national TV they would happen by July 2012.

He said he had accepted the resignation of the cabinet and that parliamentary elections next week would go ahead.

It follows days of protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square over the pace of reform.

Tens of thousands of people continued to pack Tahrir Square on Tuesday evening.

Witnesses said many appeared to reject the military's latest concessions, chanting: "We are not leaving, he (Tantawi) leaves."

Next week's parliamentary elections are due to set in train a process of transition to democracy following the toppling of President Hosni Mubarak in February.

But many Egyptians fear the military intends to hold on to power, whatever the outcome of the polls.

During the excitement that followed the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak back in February, Egyptian protesters cheered the military as it took control.

"The army and the people are [united in] one hand," they cheered. Soldiers were given sweets and flowers and hoisted children onto their tanks to pose for photographs.

Now many revolutionaries feel that such enthusiasm was naive and their celebrations were premature.
