Shahbanou Farah Opens International Lions Club, Tehran, Iran (1961):

Much of the focus of Lions Clubs International work as a service club organization is to raise money for worthy causes. All funds raised by Lions Clubs from the general public are used for charitable purposes, and administrative costs are kept strictly separate and paid for by members. Some of the money raised for a club’s charity account goes toward projects that benefit the local community of an individual club.

The stated purposes of Lions Clubs International are:

To Organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions clubs.

To Coordinate the activities and standardize the administration of Lions clubs.

To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoplesof the world.

To Promote the principles of good government and good citizenship.

To Take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.

To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.

To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members.

To Encourage service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethicalstandards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors

Abstract

The reserves created in Iran by the Game and Fish Department (there are also some forest areas along the Caspian Sea designated as ‘National Parks’ and administered by the Ministry of Natural Resources) during the past decade are playing a vital role in the conservation of the country's fauna and flora. At present there are three ‘Wildlife Parks’ and 18 ‘Protected Regions’, with a total area aggregating 3,665,156 hectares, and representing virtually every biotic community in Iran. The legal history governing the formation and maintenance of this system is discussed. Geographic boundaries and the locationof each reserve are illustrated, and their primary habitats, size, date of establishment, and future status, are listed. Representative Protected Regions and the three Wildlife Parks are described

Louise Firouz and the Caspian Horse

The Caspian was thought to be extinct until 1965, when American Louise Firouz and her Iranian Husband found the stallion Ostad in an area around the Caspian Sea in Iran.  She later discovered a few more and started a breeding program.

Political problems in Persia (Iran) were threatening the survival of the Caspian horses.  Louise made arrangements with Prince Philip to import some Caspians to England. Later, others were imported to Europe, Australia and New Zealand.  Whenthe revolution in Iran occurred, the Caspian horses were virtually destroyed, but because of the earlier imports, the breed survived.  Today, there areabout 1000 Caspians in the world; about 500 in the U.S.
