Nobel Peace Prize awarded to EU (bbc)

The European Union has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for six decades of work in advancing peace in Europe.

The committee said the EU had helped to transform Europe from a continent of war to a continent of peace.

The award comes as the EU faces the biggest crisis of its history, with recession and social unrest rocking many of its member states.

The last organisation to be given the award outright was Medecins Sans Frontieres, which won in 1999.

Nobel Prize cash awards reduced (bbc)

Nobel Prize winners are to receive a smaller cash sum in future, after a cut to prize winnings was announced.

The Nobel Foundation said the economic crisis was to blame for the move, which will see a 20% cut in prize money.

The foundation said the returns on its capital had not grown at the same rate as its costs, and that future winners would receive $1.1m (£700,000).

The money that prize winners are awarded with was donated by the chemist Alfred Nobel in his will.

Winners receive a diploma and a medal, as well as the cash.

The Nobel Foundation, which is based Stockholm, said it would also cut administration and celebration expenses this year, according to Reuters.

The Nobel prize for peace has been awarded jointly to three women, Yemeni activist Tawakkul Karman, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and her compatriot Leymah Gbowee.

Nobel chairman Thorbjrn Jagland said the women had been honoured "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work."
