First Quake:

Jonathan Mann announces that at least 50 people died and another 400 were injured in two strong earthquakes that jolted northwestern Iran Saturday.

Second Quake rises casualties:

Iran's earthquake history in recent years

March 2006 - at least 70 people are killed and nearly 1,000 injured by a 6.0 magnitude quake in Lorestan province

February 2005 - more than 500 people killed by a strong quake near Zahran, in Kerman province

December 2003 - a 6.6 magnitude quake destroys the ancient city of Bam, killing more than 25,000 people

May 1997 - more than 1,600 killed in Birjand, eastern Iran, in a 7.1 magnitude quake

            February 1997 - a 5.5 magnitude quake kills about 1,000 in north-western Iran

June 1990 - some 40,000 die in a tremor in the northern Gilan province

September 16, 1978 - Tabas earthquake was an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale which struck on September 16, 1978 in central Iran. The death toll was approximately 15,000[1] and the worst damage was to the town Tabas, which was at the epicentre of the quake and completely flattened. 40 villages within a 30 miles (48 km) radius were damaged. All the town's doctors were reported to have died, leaving civilians to treat others. All water and electricity was cut from Tabas, along with phone lines. The nearest accessible place to gain water was the town of Ferdows, a three hour drive away.

The earthquake lasted around three minutes , compared to the normal earthquake duration of 10 – 20 seconds. It struck at 19:38 local time. In the aftermath of the quake, bodies were burned where found to prevent the spread of disease.

August 31, 1968 - The Dashti Biaz earthquake of occurred at the east-central part of Iran, in the province of Khorassan, not far from where earlier shocks had caused damage in 1939, 1941, 1947 and 1962. The magnitude of the shock was 7.3 and preliminary focal depth determinations indicate a very shallow focus, less than 15 km. Fig. 1 shows the approximate location of the stronger aftershocks, the largest of which occurred on September 1 and showed a magnitude of 6.3. The earthquake caused extensive damage over an area of 4,000 km2.
