Violence does not represent true Christianity nor true Islam

Violence does not represent true Christianity nor true Islam

The USA is taking flack thanks to Nakoula for an ongoing battle between Christian Copts and Moslems in Egypt. However there is also the possibility that it was an El Qaida 9/11 related assault in the US Consulate which led to the US Ambassador's death, who was a good man who had helped the Libyan's with their coup against Moammar. This made the US look good so he was a target for the parties who wish to make the US look bad. I think that all the eruptions of anti American sentiment that we are seeing is a bottled up hostility against the US invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan and also of the fact that the Arab Spring was against dictators like Hosni Mubarak who were backed by the USA for many decades. It does not surprise me what is happening out there.

There is a refreshing honesty in atheism

by Brian Appleton on

you'll get no argument from me...I try to be a  Sufi and look how many Sufis have been executed over the ages by adherents of the book religions.... and it's happening still...

Believers and apologists tend to highlight only the good sides of religion. But the reality is that religion has done more bad than good in the hands of mankind. Therefore anyone who believes in common sense would argue that something "new" is needed, something that's not based on holy books (that are outdated), because society has changed and is always changing...

Thank you for writing it.

Religions should be peaceful.

And I believe the only way that can happen is for all governments to get out of using religions as a political tool.  That's the hard part because it requires collective action.

how to end the cycle of violence

by Brian Appleton on

the way to end it is for the US to do what it does best when under the right leadership which is to actually help the people of other countries rather than make war.  Remember Point Four under Truman when Iranians learned to love the USA? Actually helping would remove the constituency for terrorists. People around the world are not stupid. They know when US policies are good for them and when they are bad. Crippling sanctions are not good for the Iranian people for example and are only strengthening this regime which can  now justifably point to the USA as the enemy and even if people there don't think that way they are so busy just trying to subsist that they don't have time for political activism and protest. So essentially the sanctions are only helping the war lobby who will say that they didn't work and no other option is left. If instead there were a focus on cultural exchange, tourism, technological exchange, trade, things could change like they did between USA and China under Nixon with his ping pong diplomacy. The fanaticism would mellow. Few people outside China are aware of the mass starvation that took place during the time that there was no communication between US and China. Chinese friends tell me about how bodies would float up in Hong King habour and how a family of 7 would be given 1 cabbage a day by the government to live off.
