What could be better than the internet?

In 1936, Shoghi Effendi, the "Guardian" of the Baha'i'' faith, in a letter to a Baha'i' wrote:

A mechanism of world inter-communication will be devised, embracing the whole planet, freed from national hindrances and restrictions, and functioning with marvelous swiftness and perfect regularity.

Many people, Baha'i's and non Baha'i's alike think this is what we call the internet today; hind sight is 20/20.  But could there be something thats even better than the internet we know and love and can't do without?  Its tough to say.  A friend who is doing her post doctoral work at Oxford told me that a group of people similar to the one who "started" the internet are working on something even more amazing.  She wouldn't tell me what.  But I am very excited to know that more amazing technology is in the pipeline.

Veiled Prophet of Khorasan

You need to understand that there are many people including myself who believe:

*) All the"prophets" including Muhammad and Baha'ullah were humans. Just like the rest of us; not divine. They did not speak god's word. So whatever they said or wrote is "man" in the sense of "human" writings.

*) The issue with "holy books" is not how old they are or whether they are "original" or modified copies. When someone questions the divinity of the actual prophet then what does it matter if the message was modified or not? It is still work of  "humans".

Once you understand the above it should make sense why some people don't accept either Islam or Baha'i.

Veiled Prophet of Khorasan

Idea vs Invention

by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on

What Shoghi Effend wrote in 1936 was an idea. It was not unique as many people had tried to and to various degrees succeeded in implementing communications. From days of Koroush the Great they had messengers; later on postal services; by 1936 telegraph was a well established technology; had become a household item  and television was on its way to becoming available. So it is not a surprise that someone would imagine an "inter-world" communications mechanism.

Now as Divaneh said it would be amazing if  a religion would actually invent something. But taking credit for predicting the internet is a total overreach if I saw any. As for the new research at Oxford: They are not the only ones. Plenty of work goes into communications and various modes of it. I would take them more seriously after  they publish; their work is reviewed; and found to be of value.

Here are some guesses:

*) The interface to your computer will be done through thought. Initially using eye movements and later using electric signals from the brain. They will allow you to interface with a grid.

*) There will be contact lenses that include a display screen. You can turn them on or off by will.

*) Vast amounts of virtual reality. In fact you may be able to do all your "work" in virtual reality.

All of the above may become reality in some form in the next 10-20 years. But I don't need to be divinely inspired to make these guesses. Just read the literature and keep up with research.

Dear Divaneh

What I stated is not the official position of Baha'i's.  It is something that a lot of Baha'i' individuals believe.  Perhaps I should have made that clear.

The statement is fully authenticated.  It was revealed in 1936 and published for the first time in 1939.  You can find it in the library of Congress.  In that light, how would you interpret it?  I am curious.

Divaneh; you are rushing to judgment , friend :)

by faryarm on

Give your self a break , Check it out for your self before you rush to judgment.

The Quran was NOT written in the hand of The Prophet himself, over 1400 years ago, even though, the Quran contains so much that is either

misunderstood, or misinterpreted ending up as man made ritual and dogma.

The Bahai writings are less than 150 years old . they are authentic writings in the Hand of Baha'u'llah, translated and available in their original language  on the internet.

Please let me know if you still feel this is the "new version of every invention and all science are contained in Quran"

What could be better than the internet? world peace?

by faryarm on

What could be better than the internet?

WORLD PEACE, perhaps?

From the same document, there are other "insights" into the future by Shoghi Rabbani / Effendi, who was the infallible Interpreter of His teachings confirmed with the authority and guarantee of divine guidance decreed by Bahá’u’lláh.

These include:

"the establishment of a world commonwealth in which all nations, races, creeds and classes are closely and permanently united, and in which the autonomy of its state members and the personal freedom and initiative of the individuals that compose them are definitely and completely safeguarded. "

"This commonwealth must, as far as we can visualize it, consist of a world legislature, whose members will, as the trustees of the whole of mankind, ultimately control the entire resources of all the component nations, and will enact such laws as shall be required to regulate the life, satisfy the needs and adjust the relationships of all races and peoples.

A world executive, backed by an international Force, will carry out the decisions arrived at, and apply the laws enacted by, this world legislature, and will safeguard the organic unity of the whole commonwealth.

A world tribunal will adjudicate and deliver its compulsory and final verdict in all and any disputes that may arise between the various elements constituting this universal system.

A mechanism of world inter-communication will be devised, embracing the whole planet, freed from national hindrances and restrictions, and functioning with marvellous swiftness and perfect regularity.

A world metropolis will act as the nerve center of a world civilization, the focus towards which the unifying forces of life will converge and from which its energizing influences will radiate.

A world language will either be invented or chosen from among the existing languages and will be taught in the schools of all the federated nations as an auxiliary to their mother tongue. A world script, a world literature,

a uniform and universal system of currency, of weights and measures, will simplify and facilitate intercourse and understanding among the nations and races of mankind.

In such a world society, 204science and religion, the two most potent forces in human life, will be reconciled, will cöoperate, and will harmoniously develop. The press will, under such a system, while giving full scope to the expression of the diversified views and convictions of mankind, cease to be mischievously manipulated by vested interests, whether private or public, and will be liberated from the influence of contending governments and peoples. The economic resources of the world will be organized, its sources of raw materials will be tapped and fully utilized, its markets will be cöordinated and developed, and the distribution of its products will be equitably regulated.
