Name One Good Thing That the IRI Has Done for the Iranian People in the Past 31 Years

We heard it every day fro IRI cheerleaders:  the IRI is the greatest thing that has happened to Iran since the word Iran was uttered by some someone with love for that piece of real estate three thousand years ago. So, here's your chance.  Please list ALL of what you think the IRI has done to improve the lives of the Iranian people and to improve their standing in the world.

Please do not safsateh about Islam, Iraq, the U.S., Palestine, etc.  We want to focus on Iran and Iranians.  What has the IRI done in the past 30 years that any other regime could not have done (probably ten time better)? Please also note that IRI's "accomplishments" cannot be fixing their own screw ups.  For example, you cannot claim that it defended the country against Iraq because if it wasn't for IRI, Iraq would not have dared to attack Iran.

Please also refrain from giving speeches.  Kindly focus on facts and numbers.  This way, we can better understand IRI's glorious achievements.

Vildemose,

More people should pay more attention to the following issues, which you perfectly point out here, instead of nuclear power or half-ass "independence" --

"Was the society more moral and ethical as whole or not? Was the family unit more stron or less? Did women fair psychologically better or not? ... Under IRI, the entire fabric of society has turned into unspeakable preverse immorality. Many immoral and unethical things have become norms. These are  some of intangible costs under IRI."

AO, well said!!!

by Spear on

Annonymous Observer writes, "Before the 1979 devolution, Iran had female judges.  After the devolution, a woman's testimony in worth half that of a man, which really makes women half humans in the eyes of IRI's laws.  before the devolution, a woman in a divorce and custody proceedings had the right to ask for custody of her children, now custody of children automatically goes to the husband which, in turn, is an implicit threat against a woman who wants to file for a divorce."

so in looking at this post of the Captain's from another blog:

maybe we could all stop everything we're doing and brainstorm a real good one for 'Ayatollahi' too...or should we just use Ayatalibanahi to save time?

Enough said.

Q, I wrote you one long post and one short one in response to yours to me down below. Could you read them please? Thanks.

if you look through the comments below, I mentioned at some point Shah's White Revolution as the event that transformed Iran from a feudal society into a modern one.  The mullahs (and the leftists) were, at the time, vehemently opposed to it.  If the feudal system had remained in place, Iran would have a "clan" system today (as it had before) much like Afghanistan.  So, in that sense, your comparison is accurate.

What Iran is today

by Iraniandudeee on

Basically most developments that Iran has had is due to the nationalist Pahlavi dynasty who modernized and changed Iran from a poor, village nation to the some-what modern country it is today. If the islamists had taken over before let's say the pahlai dynasty ever came into power Iran would be worse off than afghanistan now, let's face facts.

Islamists being delusional as always. Even when you have millions of people protesting against this evil and leache like regime they still choose to keep their heads inside their own arses and not cope with reality. SAD SAD bunch these islamist roaches are. I'm sure even when lined up against the walls these criminals will still be this stupid and stubborn as now.

Soon my fellow Iranians, soon ;-D

So many good comments

by Anonymous Observer on

I have to say that my short blog has generated many great comments. Oktaby's great comments, same for benross, HG, MM, mina dadvar, vildemose, DK, Arthimis, kavehbc1 and almost all others.

As HG said at the beginning, the blog has been a very good conversation starter.  But the most positive aspect of the discussion has been that after almost 200 comments, with the exception of one person who has been attempting to make things personal and derail the discussions into a shouting match, everyone else-including those with opposing views, such as Q-- have maintained civility.  We have not had any comment deletions, which is pretty unusual in threads with a large number of comments.  So, good job anyone.

I think that most angles have been covered.  Although, I have to say that I agree  with the concept that one of Pahlavis' most profound contributions to the Iranian society was establishing a modernized and central bureaucracy, and it is true what benross said, that the IRI took over that infrastructure.

I will add any additional thoughts, if I can think of other things to contribute, later.

Let's not forget the contributions of the Ghajars!

by Q on

Without somebody making dirt roads, how could people have built asphalt roads?

lots of things have made me laugh but this one takes the cake:

I.R. inherited almost near a perfect system from Palavis to build on!

Of course we know that people usually have a habit of violently overthrowing perfecT systems.

Captain: Don't use "Shahollahi" anymore, that is now passe. The new, and much more descriptive term is Saltanat Taliban!

pass it on.

Arthimis

Dear Capt_ayhab jaan,

by Arthimis on

Per your order, I corrected my spelling for you and others who might have been disturbed by it Sir! I hope you'll forgive me this time professor... LOL.

Meanwhile, "near perfect" as we all know is relative to the time and place in Iran and that area in the world...

Sir, I beg you to NOT let your sheer hatred for Pahlavis, be the driving force behind your logic and common sense regarding the most evident and obvious facts known by all!

In many years here, also with another profile until they removed it, I have read your point of views regarding many stories and issues...  Must admit that I even liked many and learnt from them as well, so Thank you...

Your reasons and opinions are also correct even in opposing Pahlavis in some rightful cases! No body is perfect, we all realize that... But to come out with such level of vengeful force against realities of the past is far from true awareness, fairness and consciousness in my humble opinion...

Wishing you all the best Sir,

Reza

[Because Pahlvies didn't have anything to work with.]

So where/when did this near perfection occurred?

And I said:

Then you said[As benross rightfully explained, I.R. inheited almost near a perfect system from Palavis to build on! Any following governemnt and regime could have done 100 times .......] Your spell check is excused....... only this time

Then someone said [Spot on].

Then the other jun juni is still looking for videos' of Farah with Farookhzad or something?

People, one suggestion, It is one poor old me against you many, get together in a conference call or something and get your stories in line so you do not get caught with your proverbial knickers down.

Arthimis

Regarding facts!

by Arthimis on

As benross rightfully explained, I.R. inherited almost near a perfect system from Palavis to build on! Any following government and regime could have done 100 times if not thousands more positives for Iran and Iranians.... Iran was far beyond any of its neighbors to the extent that became a direct competition for even Europeans and the Americans, hence her down fall ... Afsoos...

However, if there is ONE single positive lesson to be learnt from I.R. (as much as I hate to admit and accept) , is that Iranians were finally awakened, hence their quest for more education on all levels...

Future is bright for Iran and Iranians, with this horrible experience and legacy from I.R. , Iran and Iranians will go to the top once again after they desolve this invader (I.R.) like their previous criminal invading predecessors through her glorious ancient history... Iran and Persia will prevail at last, it has harshly for the past 2500 years...

Free IRAN.

Mehraban: great point. Here

by vildemose on

Mehraban: great point. Here is the latest:

Iran’s home-grown economic ills pose a knottier challenge for its hardline leaders than possible new United Nations or U.S. sanctions over its nuclear program.

…The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts oil export revenue at $63.4 billion this year from output of 3.82 million barrels per day (bpd), up from $53.9 billion last year, when Iran produced 3.74 million bpd. Crude oil is trading at around $85 a barrel after averaging $62 in 2009.

“With a regional recovery in oil prices and output, Iran should really be leading the way with much stronger growth,” said independent Abu Dhabi-based economist Mohammed Shakeel.

The United States and its European allies are seeking a fourth round of U.N. sanctions on Iran, proposing a ban on new energy sector investment, more curbs on Iranian banking and shipping, a full arms embargo and penalties against members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and firms they control.

Was about to point this.

Thanks for sparing me my ink !

benross

You are quite right

by benross on

But bear in mind that for example, a city planing for expansion, may have 10 Km road in his first year, and 100 Km next year. Simply because the 100 Km can not be built without the first 10 Km.

This number comparison between IRI and Pahlavi in general is a sham. Because Pahlvies didn't have anything to work with. IRI had a well established central government built by Pahlavi.

kavehbc1

Facts

by kavehbc1 on

It is hard for many of us to look at just facts. All politicians and governments are responsible for progress some of the times.  IR of Iran is no different than others. Here are some facts from UNESCO (//www.ibe.unesco.org/fileadmin/user_upload/archive/Countries/WDE/2006/ASIA_and_the_PACIFIC/Islamic_Republic_of_Iran/Islamic_Republic_of_Iran.htm) Old report:

  increase in the number of total students throughout the country from 8.2 million in 1978 to some 18 million students in 1994 (120% increase);

·        increase in the percentage of literates in the society from 42.1% in 1975 to 82.6% in 1994;

·        increase in the gross enrolment ratio at the primary, lower and upper secondary levels from 93%, 62%, 27% in 1978 to 107%, 99% and 50%, respectively, in 1994;

·        increase in the ratio of female students to total students from 38% in 1978 to 45.8% in 1994;

·        increase in the percentage of women’s literacy from 35.5% in 1978 to 78% in 1994;

·        increase in the percentage of literacy in rural areas from 30.5% in 1978 to 75% in 1994;

·        increase in the number of college and university students from 175,000 in 1978 to 1.2 million students in 1995.

All these said The worse record is the human rights. The jails where many are in w/o a day in court, and the worse personally for me is to see so many who served in the war against Iraq are now in jails. That fact alone makes any achievements as irrelevant. How can a society treats the same people who so selflessly sacrifice to protect their family, nation and way of life by sending them to jails all over the country without giving them a fair chance to defend themselves?

is definitely staged but then what isn't? But folks you are right the Shah did have a hand in allowing it. If he had not created a one party system; if he had not come up with the 2500 calendar changes; that idiotic and offensive Jashen Honar;  the unnecessary pushing of the move lude Western values on Iran it would have not happened. Why is it that Castro has held power despite best efforts of the US? If the Shah had the guts to stand and support his military instead of begging the American's for orders! I know the Shah was constantly with the US ambassador asking what to do. The same guy sent by Jimmy Carter to destroy him. If he had some balls none of this would have ever happened.

The question that I proposed was:

If Shah was so great why so many revolted against his Utopian one party  dictatorial regime?

I seriously doubt that this one fundamental question has ever been examined  properly[That makes me think of a blog... ;-)....]

Oh i daresay it has been examined to smithereens...

Follow up question:

Why didn't that brave keeper of Farookhzad's legacy stay and fight, instead he ran like a rat?

Any better?

oktaby

DK, you list valid observations but I do not recall

by oktaby on

suggesting conspiracy. That implies lack of evidence. There is plenty of evidence and forensics. For example, Huyser entering Iran and meeting with military brass without Shah's knowledge is not conspiracy theory, but a fact.

I have commented on items you raise and agree with most. The predominant thought in 60/70's was leftist with several flavors. Shariati and rest embodied the confusion of those with money and opportunity complaining about their existential condition and finding solution in Abuzar and Hossein mythology and preaching them hard at Hosseiniye Ershad. I had heard that bastard's lectures in person.

None of this explains the turn of events to islamism. The class that was whining and started the protests was the educated and beneficiaries of Iran's success. They gave rise to Cheriks & Mojaheds etc...and under 'normal' un-interfered circumstances the outcome was to be something between a broad reform of the Monarchy, to a leftist (take your flavor) take over. However, the building of the islamists street network had started several years earlier right under Shah's nose. Intensified after 1973 and funded by foreign elements for reasons I listed and are well documented, as well as the bazar who had a strong religious connection. Yazdi, is a bad example as he was someone with ambition and sold out. Ghotbzadeh was just a newbe idiot and got what he deserved. neither represent the majority, albeit leftist' educated view of the world.

I do not want to guess as Shah's illness factor but think a better explanation for the indecision on response and corrective actions to settle things, is the growing rift among various power groups. Hoveyda, Alam, Amniatti's. Certainly an early massive show of force by Shah, could have delayed and changed things, if not stop them.

OKtaby

benross

A good summary DK

by benross on

If I may, I should add that hate propaganda against the Shah for the past 30 years, is -curiously- not much from the real left activists on the ground who where actually fighting the Shah and were the main target of SAVAK operation. Those do not qualify as 'Caviar Gauch'. They are of middle class, generally with modest family income. The hate is coming from the rich bunch, who don't have the guts to act and all they can do is to propagate hatred.

Of-course, there are exceptions that prove the rule.
