The title is a variation on a Persian expression and frankly we excel at it. You only need to look at all the (political) arguments on this site and how we revere a bunch of dead failures. We are also so ignorant of our history that we repeat it. There was recently a rehash of Rostam's letter, below is from some 800 years later but laments the same failures as a nation.
امان از من و تو

Guys don't think so
by amirrostam on Sat Jan 19, 2008 05:44 AM PSTGuys don't think so literally. If our culture is so rich and we are so good (we are not, we are a failed nation, a has been nation) then why do we have the same themes running throughout history? I am not interested in others (or comparisons with others). All I am interested in is getting you to think. If I make you think a little then maybe you get off your high horse then perhaps we can fix it, without that we will never do it.
Amir Rostam
To Shirazi 2
by Mona 19 (not verified) on Sat Jan 19, 2008 04:58 AM PSTYou're right
"""Be realistic. Relying on a nation's history and past accomplishments will not solve today's problems."""
But we can learn from our mistakes. We need to find what's our illness and ailments in today society and discover the hidden sources of disease and indicate the necessary remedy.
Regard,
Mona
Guys, Be realistic. Relying
by shirazi 2 (not verified) on Sat Jan 19, 2008 02:45 AM PSTGuys,
Be realistic. Relying on a nations's history and past accomplishments will not solve today's problems. The sooner we realise that we have been Khars for the past 200 years and insist to remain Khars in 21st century, the sooner we can do something about it.
Get real guys, get real.
BTW, I agree with you that iranians are plainly and deeply confused, but then again that's even worse than being a KHar, because these poor animals are not necessarily "deeply and plainly confused".
Shame, Blame and Regret Is Not Good For You

This Fairest of Lands was once a lamp....
by Mona 19 (not verified) on Fri Jan 18, 2008 07:58 PM PSTYou were once the lords of the whole earth; the world was at your beck and call. How is it that your glory has lapsed and you have fallen from favor now, and crept away into some corner of oblivion?
You were the fountainhead of learning, the unfailing spring of light for all the earth, how is it that you are withered now, and quenched, and faint of heart?
You who once lit the world, how is it that you lurk, inert, bemused, in darkness now? Open your mind’s eye, see your great and present need.
Rise up and struggle, seek education, seek enlightenment.

Are you looking for a bigger KHAR!
Not Quite Khar!
by Concerned Iranian (not verified) on Fri Jan 18, 2008 07:06 PM PSTThe issue is not so much that somehow Iranians are Khar and everybody else is so smart. Take a look at so many other 3rd world countries who think and behave in even more idiotic ways than us. Iranians are not dumb or stupid. I wish they were because then we could just say that we do not understand the sophisticated ways of modern life and politics. Instead, they are confused. They are disoriented. They are like a caravan which has lost the Northern light and do not know their direction. This largely is because of the traumatic events of the last 2000 years, and specifically the last 500 years (the era of Safavids) and of course now, the era of equally confused Islamists. They are simply lost, twirling around in a jagged manner as they manuever back and forth. They are akin to a genious (not necessarily bragging!) child, an orphan one, who has been left without any direction--left to his own devices. To be sure, this child is now growing up but remains highly disoriented, deeply traumatized. They turn to many directins in search of answers, but they do ot realize that the answer lies in themseleves, within their minds. They will continue to search and will continue to remain lost. The hope is someday, somehow, they will snap out of this Barzakh and see things the way they really are: they have one of the richest country in the world in oil, gas and other natural minerals; they have the most desirable tempreature where they can go on vacation within their country and ski and swim in the same week by simly going north or south; they have a rich and glorious history (No, I am not talking about worshipping or beating your chest for dead people 1400 years after their death); they have a rich culture and even richer literature (not this fake, pesudo-literature the people are being force-fed with; they are an industrious people who excel in many many ways (as they have proven themselves thruought the world). They do not have to defy religion. They should simply should open their eyes to see what if any part of their religion is true to their culture and existence and discard the rest. In short, Iranians are not Khar, they are plainly and deeply confused.
