Very accurate account of the 1979 "revolution"

by Mehdi on

This is the most comprehensive and accurate account I have ever seen of the 1979 "revolution." I think if more Iranians put some time and effort and researched this further, a lot of embarrassing facts will pop up and make it very clear that although people apparently were involved in this "movement," the fact remains that it was a planned and staged event. People were simply were put to motiopn, very much like puppets when you pull their strings. Religious beliefs were used to motivate people into destroying their own country. Just because people were on the street does not mean that 1979 was actually a revolution by people.

I wish somebody would invest a few dollars and investigate this further, interview CIA agents of that era, and look for other clues as to how precisely they managed this event. It would be interesting, as well as productive research - far better than people pouring into streets today based on a "fatwa" by the likes of Mousavi!

put their thoughtful comments here. And together let us read this patriotic poem by Dr Aref Pejmaan

Some Angles on the 1979 Revolution in Iran

by Baharan on

An exploration of the Islamic Revolution in Iran and its meaning for the rest of the world can begin with three wide-ranging generalizations: 1. The Iranian Revolution showed that religion can still be a more potent mobilizer of mass political action than can secular ideologies. 2. The revolution challenges the cultural hegemony of Western ideas, not only as a religion but as an alternative social model and way of life. 3. The Iranian Revolution thus can be regarded as one of the most important happenings in modern history, comparable to the French Revolution in the 18th century and the Russian Revolution in this century.

In the wake of the Salman Rushdie affair, and ongoing terrorism threats against aviation and other vulnerable points, Iran and its farflung adherents remain persistently in the world's eye.

It's All About The Oil Stupid!

by Rad Lanjani on

It's All About The Oil Stupid! ... 1979 revolution in Iran, the situations in Iraq and Afghanistan are all about oil and pipelines. The Iranian revolution was the proximate cause of what would become the highest price in post-WWII history.  However, its impact on prices would have been limited and of relatively short duration had it not been for subsequent events. Shortly after the revolution, production was up to 4 million barrels per day.
In September 1980, Iran already weakened by the revolution was invaded by Iraq. By November, the combined production of both countries was only a million barrels per day and 6.5 million barrels per day less than a year before. Consequently worldwide crude oil production was 10 percent lower than in 1979.
The combination of the Iranian revolution and the Iraq-Iran War cause crude oil prices to more than double increasing from $14 in 1978 to $35 per barrel in 1981.
Three decades later Iran's production is only two-thirds of the level reached under the governments appointed by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the former Shah of Iran.
Iraq's production remains a million barrels below its peak before the Iraq-Iran War.

Dear Khar

by benross on

During early times of Reza Shah, and also after his departure and during the occupation, we had closest thing to what Iranian society could offer as a democratic process and public involvement in decision making. And the pluralism represented in that process was defined -almost officially and without any pretense- as pro-British, pro-Russian, some individuals as pro-American. And these were not 'fringe' political powers beside the representatives of people. They WERE the representatives of the so called democratic process. They were not pro this and pro that because affiliation in ideas. They were their instruments, right to the bone.

For heaven sake the founders of constitutional revolution were taking 'bast' in British embassy. How possibly can you exclude the foreign intervention in the evolution of our history? this concept, as an idea, was born with the revolution but as a social reality, it is only getting shape now, after 150 years of struggle.

Thank you Khar and ...

by All-Iranians on

Considering Khar as Big (in Farsi: Bozoorg) and calling you Agha Bozoorg, please note that those lines were written by the Iranian writers Ali Mirfetross and Amir Sepehr and undoubtedly they got to respond. They however did not exclude the internal factors involved. Also note that the conclusion of the article by All-Iranians indicates that this is a story which remains to be completed and the facts will be surely revealed more and more on the days and the years to come.

150 years struggle...

by Khar on

for democracy and a just society by Iranian people has been all a foreign conspiracy? Nice, thanks for rehashing these old and tired theories which considers the people factor as irrelevant in the last 150 year especially last half century. So, how do you analyze and call the events of the last 8 month? Is that a foreign conspiracy too, You may as well.
