Capturing History

Photo essay: Mahgameh Parvaneh, photographer

by Nazy Kaviani
08-Mar-2011

The cover image for this photo essay is one of the most memorable scenes from the early days of the Green Movement after the disputed June 2009 presidential election. I had the good fortune of sitting down with the photographer Mahgameh Parvaneh, to talk about her work. Here is our chat, plus several of the photographs she has taken inside Iran.

I visited the photographer's website and browsed other photos 2 nights ago........the Ashura photos are as bloody as the photos from post election protests.....self-inflicted bleeding?......it shook me up! I was wondering if they can have bloodless and peaceful Ashura in the future!

Thank you for the the photo essay....especially the exclusive Evin photos! We are so fortunate to see the photos first.....so IC beat Life magazine, Time Magazine, and CNN for these rare photos! The Evin photos shocked me: three tier bunk beds with bed skirt decorations and Persian carpet.....very different from the American prisons for male inmates I watched on TV: bare prison cells with metal toilets....the photo captions mentioned that a lot of female inmates decorate their cell....one death row inmate even embroidered her mattress.......apparently these women are very domestic......

I am not sure if all cells in Evin are like that....Roxanna Saberi said she slept on the floor with other Bahai inmates in Evin prison....

I like the Zurkaneh (House of Strength) photos a lot......but I just got bad news from the photo captions that women are not allowed in the Zurkhaneh....that is a bummer! I thought about visiting Zurkhane; if I visit Iran! I think Iran should open Zurkaneh for tourists and local people of both genders........

P.S. Hi! Statira, I agree with your last post 1000%! Yeah!

Thank you

Thank you wonderful friends for your kind words. I was fortunate to work with a subject who is so talented! Mahgameh's art carries this photo essay on its own merits.

For those of you who wrote and asked, I asked Mahgameh about the availability of her prints. She said many of her prints are available for sale and you are welcome to contact her at this address:

mahgameh_p at yahoo.com

Furthermore, regarding her 120 photographs from Evin Prison, she is looking for a publisher who might be interested in publishing the whole collection and help her show what she saw to the world.

Thank you again for your interest.

Really? nasihat?

Smoking in public is not cool anymore

by statira on

there was time that smoking in parties and movies considered cool, but not these days. You cant find any movie that movie actors smoke. She also puts the health of other people including her interveiwer in danger(second hand smoking). Anyway, as an artist she's done a great job.

Impressive artist and interview

by Monda on

Mahgameh's photos of Evin prisoners impacted me the most. And I find the images in her White Project very original and interesting through the feminist lens; although the forms pull one in regardless.  Mahgameh's shots of the protestors and artists were also engaging.

Welcome to the Bay Area Mahgameh. We look forward to your exhibits.

Thank you Nazy for this beautiful piece.

Esfand Aashena

In Evin she really has accomplished the "near impossible".

by Esfand Aashena on

It appears that she took the Evin photos during Khatami as well as some of her other photos.  Now these things are impossible!

The post election 2009 protests seems to have also sent many of Iran's best and brightest to the prisons or exile.  That's one of the worst legacies of that time, that the protests wasn't the end but only the beginning of the end.

Last month I saw My Tehran For Sale and the filmmaker who made the movie said that she couldn't get permission to film because the film was ready for screen just at the same time of the 2009 elections and followup protests.

I just hope that we can see our best and brightest back in Iran using their talents and understanding of the society and put it to good use again.  I wouldn't want them to go back and end up in prison but certainly use their talents again.

Anyway, beautiful photos and Nazy jaan thanks for sharing and you may want to remind your friend to quit smoking!  You don't need a cigarette with tea! zoolbia bamieh is enough!

Everything is sacred

An amazing array of photographs!

by Omid Hast on

What a great photographer!

I was moved by photo #40 when I saw it the first time in 2009, and I was moved even more finding out that the photographer that took that picture now lives amongst the Iranian community in the USA.

"The White Project" photos are truly remarkable.  I particularly like the way they resemble paintings, rather than photos.  I enjoyed the way the shapes and the images of the women dissolves into the white color background, and what remains to be seen is more intense than its original splendor.

What an amazing courage and perseverance to reach that point to be given permission to take those pictures inside Evin Prison!
And, the pictures of the ordinary and cultural people of Iran are truly priceless.

Thank you Nazy and Mahgameh for this wonderful treat for the International Woman’s Day.

Nazy Kaviani

Hi Hamsadeh Jan!

by Nazy Kaviani on

Thank you so much for your kind comment. I don't know why you can't see the black and white pictures of Evin Prison. But pictures 13-18 are of Mahgameh's "White Project." They show the subject, Iranian woman, dissolving into the background, as explained in the photo essay, with only hints of "tradition" bringing her back. If you go to her website, you can see the full collection: //mahgamehparvaneh.com/art_white.htm
