Photo essay: A prayer for hope

by Nazy Kaviani

In the early hours of Saturday, I set our Nowruz spread. I grew up in a household of ceremonies and rituals. Everything was a BIG deal to my parents, worthy of time, attention, and love. Of all the ceremonies celebrated in my childhood, however, nothing was as big as Nowruz. Weeks of preparations and cleaning chores and shopping delivered my family into the moments the year changed, the biggest deal of the year. I left my parents' home when I was 18. Whatever I learned there has obviously made a serious impact on me! I have celebrated Nowruz at my home and away, in a small student studio or in the middle of life-changing crises, in foreign lands and in Iran. However and wherever I have celebrated the beginning of the New Day, it has been with thought, love, and hope ... more

I think I'd already read that Persian article somewhere....but have forgotten about the name "Pateh"

Happy New Year dear.

I am so sorry that I can't enjoy those beautiful pictures of your Haft Seen. I have the IC site only in one of my devices and it has a problem showing the pictures in a bright color. I have to adust this.

Just was curious to know, what is the Paté (pateh) you are talking about ?

What is the name in Persian? Is that a Persian delight?

Thank you.

Thank you for your very kind comments, everyone! I hope the new year is full of joy for all of you and your families.

Yolanda Jan, the two blue containers which look like vases are "golab-doon," or rosewater containers. And yes, that IS my sweet cat, Mir!

Ebi Jan, it won't be a festive occasion without my mother's "pateh" as decoration. Thanks for noticing it!

You guys are very kind to me. Thanks for visiting and for commenting y'all!

Your haft seen table is very beautiful and you have done a great job presenting it, in the actual setting of the table, in your written essay, and the photo essay.

Hi Nazy,

Both your photos & essay are beautiful......the spread looks very Persian and classical...I especially like the pair of blue vases or candle holders?......the essay is heart-warming......'cause you said that your family prayed for other people, too.

#12 must be Mir Hussein, the pet!

I look forward to your next blog or next call for essays!

Happy Persian New Year to you and your family as well as the kitty cat!
