by Raoul1955 on Fri Sep 30, 2011 03:45 AM PDTAssuming that you [just like most visitors to this site] are an educated person [and perhaps] with a terminal degree:
There is a difference between 'nationality' and the 'national origin.'
Yasamin has her nationality on her CV.
If you are a US Citizen with a passport take a look at your 'nationality' on your passport...
I feel strongly an Iranian myself.
by comments on Thu Sep 29, 2011 06:56 PM PDTI feel strongly an Iranian myself, but I think Iranians are too obsessed with their nationality. Do I put my undergraduate degree from the best university in Iran in my resume? Certainly not. Are you curious about my reasons?
I remember when Jim Carrey had to choose between his Canadian and American nationality he chose American. His response was the US made him Jim Carrey not Canada. This example has nothing to do with me, but I have my own reasons.
Just to be
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Thu Sep 29, 2011 03:31 PM PDTbe clear I did not mean they are not Iranian. Obviously they are. My response was to Raoul trying to put them down or claim they are not Iranian. Anyone with a brain knows those are Iranian names. The resume of Yasamin clearly says she got her degree from Sharif University. Unfortunately with racism and anti-Iranianism many try to hide their national origin. I don't: I am Iranian and tell all my friends so. But it does not surprise me if some do not go advertising it. Besides it is not required.
Nevertheless I do congratulate them. They are by no means the only ones. Many other Great Iranians are in America. Including some in my own family :-) Good for them and good for us all!
Congrats!

Making All Iranins so Proud
by All-Iranians on Thu Sep 29, 2011 08:39 AM PDTCongratulations to those Iranian scientists for making All Iranins so proud; the special thanks go to Khanum Doctor Mostofi who enjoys playing piano, learning Santur, writing and reading Persian poems, painting and Tae Kwon Do.
Iranian students
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Thu Sep 29, 2011 07:18 AM PDTFirst these are American citizens so there is no reason to say otherwise. Also Iranian students do no always get Iranian advisers. Both my advisers were American Jews. Both treated me very well.
Our relationship was for most part scientific. The only thing I challenged them on was on science issues. One of them asked me in the 1980s how Iran was doing in the war. I said Iran was getting help mostly from Israel. He was pretty surprised and we had a nice discussion on it. Nothing bad or offensive; I just explained the complexity of the relationship. Then went back to doing our science. No big deal no problems and we are still friend even though one got a Nobel prize since :-)
OK. Raul.
by comments on Thu Sep 29, 2011 07:16 AM PDT"I found it interesting that none of these American scholars makes any reference to Iran or Iranian on their sites."
I didn't think that you meant "interestingly positive". Did you? What did you expect them to write on their wall to reference Iran or Iranians? Can you please give me some examples?
A name relates to the background of an individual. Iranian names are unique to Iranians almost in all cases. When a name of a student is Iranian in engineering departments it usually reflect an individual with a student visa. How many Ph.D. students in engineering do you know who grew up in here?
Why should we mind about someone's "citizenship" status? Are you a visa officer? Isn't it enough to be from an Iranian parent, parents or grands?

by Raoul1955 on Thu Sep 29, 2011 06:50 AM PDTPlease read my post again.
I took a look at their profiles and none has any statement about Iran, or being Iranian. I don't use someone's NAME as a basis for his/her Citizenship.
Iranians...
by comments on Thu Sep 29, 2011 06:44 AM PDTAgain TO Raul:)
Iranians automatically promote Persian culture and their home land because they look like Iranians and they feel Iranians. They don't need to carry a slogan with themselves all the time
That's for people who want revolution. Revolutionaries who are used to destroy our nation and build them again. Slogans are not for peace lovers...
Raul?
by comments on Thu Sep 29, 2011 06:35 AM PDTWhat are you talking about? All of their students are Iranians. I am not sure if that's an appropriate idea though.
I don't think it's a great idea because it mainly means that they only get along with Iranian students who are obedient and have no chance to challenge their professors usually because of the visas. I don't think one could achieve a real Ph.D. without challenging their supervisors.
Why do you think professors hire visa-requiring students? Only because they couldn't find smart students in the US?!
SWEET BUT SAD
by JavoonDeerooz on Wed Sep 28, 2011 10:08 PM PDTI don't think there is another country in the world which has so much talent and so much wealth and look where we are. While IRI is certainly to blame for the current brain drain, the Pahlavi regime was not much more successful in establishing Iran as a scientific power house.

Fine Young Cannibals!!
by Anonymous Observer on Wed Sep 28, 2011 06:58 PM PDTI was too young to really appreciate their music when they were popular (late 80's?), but was introduced to their music by an older cousin a few years ago, and really liked it. So, I have a couple of their songs on my iPod even now. I also like other early wave stuff. May be I was born in the wrong decade! I do remember hearing about them though when I was younger and may even had listened to them, but did not really appreciate them.

Dear Anahid
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Wed Sep 28, 2011 04:57 PM PDTI know who that band was. But I have read enough of these posts to know a jab when I see one. The British "knight" their greats. We compare them with FYC? I am sensitive based on history.
I have been reading the increasingly disrespectful tone against Iranians. If there is a bad thing a "particular group" is all over them. If there is a good thing they mock it. One way or another it has to be a jab.
We should be giving these people real respect. Not making them the receiving end of jokes. That is my two cents on this blog. I salute these people and many other great Iranian scientists. No jokes; no making fun either in good or bad humor.
Anahid jaan - some people are just so....
by Anonymous Observer on Wed Sep 28, 2011 04:50 PM PDTThey get "outraged" by things that they don't even understand. They wear they fake outrage on their sleeves. See the comment below. They talk about cannibals when my reference was to the British rock band! How funny. :-))

PS- I wish I was as good looking as this guy. Instead, I look like Trita Parsi. :-(
Dear VPK,
by Anahid Hojjati on Wed Sep 28, 2011 04:40 PM PDTFine Young cannibals was a band famous in early 1990s or was it late 1980s? And a commentator on this thread thought that one of awrard winners looked like the lead singer of that band? I did not take that there was any insult, even though I don't see much similarity in looks between this guy and the lead singer. I don't know , may be there is more to it, VPK jan, don't be so sensitive about each and every comment.

Dear Anahid
by Veiled Prophet of Khorasan on Wed Sep 28, 2011 04:33 PM PDTWhat I see around here is constant jabs at Iranian people. All in the name of "jokes" or "fun" or whatever. To add insult to injury perfectly innocent posts vanish from my blog. If a post is a jab at Iranians that is "good fun".
Do you really find the "joke" about "Cannibals" funny? I don't. But unlike some people I will not flag it. Why not show some real respect for the incredible accomplishments of these people. But that is too much to ask from the posters here.
Day by day I become more ashamed of reading these blogs. I don't know what is going on here. Maybe "respect" is becoming an endangered species. I am very sorry but I just don't find these very funny.
