The Dual Burdens

Most Iranian men support Iranian women in their struggle to gain equal rights

The Dual Burdens

Whilst Iranian women struggle for an affirmation of their status as equal citizens and are demanding withdrawal of discriminatory laws against them, the United Nations elects the country’s totalitarian regime to its Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). The conditions under which the Iranian women live, have enough grounding for the United Nations to call the regime in Iran on their gender apartheid; instead they have promoted IRI to a seat on CSW. When the laws of a totalitarian regime are supported and legitimized by the international community they will have a direct effect on the perpetuation of injustice, as well as continuation of segregation in the society. This in my opinion is justifying more domestic violence.

Sadly what we witness first hand is that Iranian women’s suffering is underestimated by the United Nations recent act. They seem to treat this primarily as a fictionalized case. But these are not the reasons why I write this note. I am writing this because a few days ago I read an article by an Iranian women’s rights activist named Shadi Sadr. In that article Sadr makes several statements against Iranian men and compares them all with the totalitarian regime’s Imam, Ayatollah Seddighi, a man who called women the reason for earthquakes in his Friday sermon, and represents a regime that arrests, rapes, and kills.

Iranian men unfortunately are once again victims of stereotyping and this time not by the American Betty Mahmoody in a movie called “Not without My Daughter” but in Sadr’s article titled “What is Different between Tehran’s Friday Sermon Imam and the rest of Iranian Men?”. The image she has portrayed of Iranian men in her article is misleading. Without raising objection to the original comments and minimizing the Ayatollah’s statement she takes Iranian men to a kangaroo court and denies them all due process rights. Based on Sadr’s statement half the population of the country is guilty of sexual harassment as well as mischievous behavior against Iranian women. Where is the logic in such a comparison? Those men are mostly innocent of the crimes Sadr is convicting them of. After all Iranian men are not a bol de soupe that everything could go in. This is simply wrong.

But then some may say I question Sadr’s motives in writing such an article because I have not been victimized or assaulted in the streets of Iran. I assure you that will be a failing argument. Like some Iranian women I too have experienced that type of vulgarity in the streets back in Iran, i.e. age 9: a young man grabbed my bosom as I walked with my mother and brother, age 13, covered in the mandatory Hijab and walking to school a man came close to me and said: “I want to eat your pussy,” at age 14 I was harassed by a Basiji on several occasions. In his last attempt he pushed me against the wall and pressed himself against me. Whatever our personal experiences may or may not be, we can not deny men’s rights by collectively putting them all in the same camp as the Imam.

Although subjects such as women’s oppression in Iran and gender apartheid are important issues to be raised and discussed, none should admonish us to forget that most Iranian men support Iranian women in their struggle to gain equal rights. We need to acknowledge the difference between the totalitarian regime’s men and the Iranian male population. There’s no room for bias in women’s movement that is supposed to be fighting against bias!

Iranian-Women Stereotypes [VIDEOS]

by kemalmajor on

You wanted to know what the source is for some of the stereotypes against Iranian women; I provided a list of links to videos and news stories below that are topical to your question. And I am sure if you start searching the web you will find that the internet is full of much more controversial content regarding Iranian women.

The second point is that I asked some people non-Iranians and Iranian whether they would be willing to fight against these stereotypes: that's where the source of information came from. Also, SOME Iranian men said that Iranian women have turned male-bashing into a sport and that they were not going to help, and that it was unrealistic to expect it under the circumstances. In other words, some Iranian men are no longer willing to defend Iranian women because of the chronic slander.

Quite a list you come up with here  .. LOL

Question

Are these  Americans, Europeans, and Canadians that you refer to your buddies at the local bar who have been dumped by Iranian women?

Frank Talk About Some Iranian-Women

by kemalmajor on

The subset of Iranian women who engage in chronic male-bashing – will in all likelihood never be able to return to Iran and/or will not be welcome if they do. Moreover, they will also alienate men in the Diaspora: so they face a double-whammy. This is their choice, but the sad part is that they are teaching young girls to emulate them and inadvertently making others into permanent exiles and undesirable friends. By the time individuals like this find themselves alone, divorced 3 times, and taking cupboards full of medication to stay “happy,” it will be too late for them.

In a few generations the size of the Iranian Diaspora will shrink and people will become assimilated.

The chronic male-bashers, also fail to realize that through their own behavior they are making themselves famous for reasons people view as wholly negative; and these reputational effects will haunt them in the Diaspora. I recently asked a group of Americans, Europeans, and Canadians what the stereotypes of Iranian women are in the Diaspora, and I roughly got this list:

1. chronic male-bashing,
2. narcissistic gossiping;
3. green card fraud;
4. drunken behavior;
5. slutty behavior;
6. alimony fraud;
7. habitual lying / manipulative;
8. selfishness;
9. addicted to plastic surgery;
10. materialistic.

To be clear, these are not my words.

The other trend I noticed in Iran, is that Iranian men are starting to gravitate towards marrying non-Iranian women, citing some of the same sorts of complaints. One said, 'send the women from Tehran who chronically complain to Afghanistan and send the women from Afghanistan to Tehran.' In other words, attitudes are hardening.

I’m not suggesting that these attributes are true for all Iranian-women – and I would hate to think they are. But I am suggesting that both men and women need to take a more positive approach to each other.

You don’t want to find yourselves in the position of knowing you can’t return to Iran and that you’ve made each others’ lives in the Diaspora hell.

Iraniandudee3

Stop with the self-hate already

by Iraniandudee3 on

Seriously, whenever it comes to "Iranian" femenists they fucking point the finger at the Iranian men like they're the only one's who do this. Please, why don't you go to any Arab, Asian or African nation and say such things, I'll promise you that the answer you'll recieve will be a smack in the face. Do the femenists in America only point at the American men? Or the how about the femenists in Europe, or even the mid-east, NOPE, They point at men in general, all over the world who have sexist views. Iranian men are probably the least oppresive in most ways as they don't treat you like a sex toy nor force you to wear a ninja suit, and they diff better than most Arab/Mid-eastern or Muslim countries, even American or western men, cause if you look at the average marriage in America, it only lasts for 10 years, there's a reason for that. It's all about culture and the mentality that it encourages in the end. So be glad you have succesful, caring and handsome ( :-D) Iranian men instead of some Arab or American who will just abuse and use you, cause in a blink of an eye you'll wake up in your 30's as a misrable women living alone with 2 kids without a daddy, so stop complaining, we all know we have problems with the regime, but you're not gonna solve anything by pointing fingers at one specific group or sex.

Just take a look at our true Perian/Iranian culture and not that crap (Islam) you'll see that Iranians/persians were the first one's to treat women as equals, just look at the Pahlavi dynasty, that was one of the closest thing to a Persian style of governing and rule we had for the past 1400 years.

So to the femenists, don't abuse your powers by putting everyone or even most into the same category just to degrade a whole group and its culture.

i think azadeh's tone should not be used as an argument against her initial statement. iranian men need to be woken up to the truth of the situation, and to stop making excuses. iranian women are oppressed by iranian men, and have been for far longer than is acceptable by today's standards. every society has its own dynamics and specifics as well as historical path. nevertheless, iran remains oppressive toward women and this could not have come about other than through the acquiescence of the majority of iranian men with the dominant form of misogyny in iran.

I don't have a problem either with men or with myself. Someone who quotes a dictator like Lenin to make a point is living in the beginning of a past century and is not capable of comprehending that I don't believe in a fight against men, but against male chauvinist ideas that people such as yourself carry - whether consciously or unconsciously. Hence my asking men to rid themselves of oppressive ideas by transforming themselves from within. Furthermore, I don't believe in slogans and as far as complexes (oghdehs) go, you are simply projecting. I suggest that you take care of your complex, your control impulse and stop telling me and other women how to fight against male chauvinism. Limit yourself to your bad-taste and bazaari poems that are full of complexes. You don't even know the difference between repentance (a word you put in my mouth) and self-examination and self-transformation. Try not to dictate to women what they should or should not do (the way Lenin acted,) but transform yourself from within, and join the 21st century.

I'm done with you.

ماروویچ می گوید:  whatever you do, violent or nonvionet, you should do it as part of a strategic plan    البته ماروویچ هم- متاسفانه- مرد است!

by benross on

I usually don't interfere with discussions about women rights. Simply because I don't belong and it's not my place. I support them and that's all I can do.

But since the article of Mrs. Sadr had a large repercussion, and it was addressing an issue about Iranian male in general, and this article is not going to be the last one, I simply say this:

Mrs Sadr is absolutely right. The mere reaction that it provoked proves that she is right and touched a cord with male Iranians who, in best case scenario, try to negotiate their way out of it silently. And Mrs Sadr broke the silence.

Now, does it muddy the political space as Mrs Sheema Kalbasi rightfully points it out? absolutely. But we have to deal with political space and cultural space at the same time. We have no other choice. The mere existence of this article is a proof that this is how it''s going to be.

Another Hossein, another condescending "advice" to women

by Azadeh Azad on

I thought my reply to Hossein B. would make Iranian men *think* about maybe not being so condescending towards the oppressed gender and refrain from telling feminists how to behave, how to analyse their own conditions and what strategy to adopt to combat sexism. Obviously, I was expecting too much of Iranian men.

After Hossein B, we now have another Hossein (Naanaam) to advise us women about the best strategy to adopt. Why don't these "enlightened" members of the dominant gender try to advise themselves, their male friends  and relatives how to overcome their lust for control of women and their movements? As I suggested to Hossein B., you guys can show feminists your good intentions by working on yourselves and your male friends, by writing about the male resistance to change, different types of control over women, etc. Write about what YOU have experienced and know, not about what women have experienced and know. Capiche?

Another important point for this blog: In my long experience with women who have been active in different women's organisations, I have noticed that when these women also belong to other groups, to ideological or religious groups that they consider paramount in their lives, they are often unable to formulate a valid and valuable analysis of any situation concerning women because the ideas of their group interfere with their analysis of women's conditions and situations by giving priority to their groups' ideas. They would consider social classes and “imperialism” as more important than the male-female oppressive relationships (in the case of radical leftists), the nation of Iran as more important (in the case of nationalists,) or the peace and collaboration between men and women as equals under the guidance of a prophet as more important (in the case of Bahais.) These are just examples. There are other groups that I have not mentioned here. When women cannot, for whatever reason, analyze women’s situation as women, as people belonging to a specific gender that is now, and has been historically, oppressed by the male gender, then they cannot come up with a correct analysis. Period.

"women abuse in Iran is deeply rooted in the lack of proper education"

What a crock.   This is a cultural, religious tradition that is currently being reenforced by education in the country.  THe IRI inclusion on the women's rights seat is a mockery of what women rights should be.  The IRI will simply use this as a beacon to tell the world that they really treat women like equals, when in fact the exact opposite is the case.

Another interesting comment. What DK writes about Reza Khan is interesting but not surprising. Cultural campaign for women equality is a worthy cause which can be best carried out at the grass root level in a democratic society inside Iran. The virtual space or exile are not the best venues for such campaigns. That is why I think the biggest challenge of our time is political in nature. One may bring up the chicken-egg paradox and argue that these cultural issues breed the kind of backwardness, discrimination, and violence that characterizes the regime in Iran. That might be true to a certain extent in the same way as some may argue that Nazism or Fascism had their underpinnings in the European culture. The political project not only must go on but also given the first priority in my opinion because without the success of the political project, the social project for change has little chance of success.

I believe despite all our cultural deficiencies and chauvinistic males and so on we can do better than this. Some may even argue that many of the things that Shadi Sadr says about Iranian men, are things that western feminists might say about western men. Obviously most of us would trade their political system and democratic institutions for ours in a heart beat. The logical conclusion of Ms Sadr arguments is that this regime, by virtue of representing our male chauvinistic culture, enjoys some degree of legitimacy although she may not have put it this way.

and sorry for your terrifying experience. I am sure there are men who become victim of same type sexual assaults but afraid to come out because of the same cultural issues.
The UN seat for IRI in CSW is a good thing. The majority of issues regarding women abuse in Iran is deeply rooted in the lack of proper education that people from Statesmen to ordinary are suffering from.

A conferences as such will give exposure to the IRI statesmen. Instead we had to welcome IRI to volunteer for this. This can open an small opening to their desire for change.

personal power

by gunjeshk on

Posted earlier by DK, words of Princess Ashraf Pahlavi:

"Reza Shah was determined to “Westernize” Persia, to bring it into the twentieth century, since it was in the West that he saw the most dynamic expressions of prosperity and power. To do this, to make us prosperous and powerful, he could not afford to leave our Women, half of Persia’s small population, inactive and covered.

He decided to abolish the chador, the traditional veil. Here again was an example of the paradox that was my father. Though I never felt he was willing to relax his strict control over us at home, he did make the historic decision to present the Queen, my sister Shams, and me, unveiled, to the population of Teheran.

To Reza Shah, as to any Persian man, anything concerning his wife and family was a private matter. You could sooner ask him how much money he earned or how much his house cost before you could ask personal questions about his wife or daughters. At home my father was very much a man of an earlier generation (I remember he ordered me to change my clothes “at once” because I had appeared at lunch in a sleeveless dress). But as the king, he was prepared to put aside his strong personal feelings in the interest of bringing progress to his country. When he had made his decision, he came to us and said, “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but I must ask you to serve as an example for other Persian women."

The inclination to exercise personal "control" is the last vestige of male domination in any culture. This power is execised subtly in the personal realm.  I agree with Azadeh and lament that so much of what she described is the result of unconscious attitudes. The antidotes are time and evolution supported by women who refuse to abdicate their own authority, regardless of the cost. Many women I meet, despite their education and professional achievement, simply do not understand or embrace their personal authority.

Walk up to a crowd of Iranian men having a conversation about current events or politics. Offer your opinion as a woman. See the reaction.  After a while it is as if you didn't speak, aren't there.

Thank you everyone for your comments and dear Azadeh, You raise several important points. However I am still looking for FACTS that would support such audacious claims and generalizations. I think this is an important discussion to have and I certainly appreciate your opinion. On the other hand I believe women’s issues cannot really be separated from the basic desire of the young generation of Iranians to live a free and normal life. I am not sure male and women divisions would serve the greater good of this generation. Thanks again.

Male chauvinism

by Iraniandudeee on

Iranian men aren't the only one's like this but all men are when it comes to women. Men everywhere in the world view theirselves as the dominant sex. This isn't rocket science you know, you can experience this in daily life everywhere, so I have no idea why you're singling out Iranian or middle-eastern men.

For example, if the islamist man in Iran views the women as less of an equal by covering her up then the American male views the American women as less of an equal by whoring her out and only looking at her as some sort of sex toy, same sh!t different smell :) I rather have a society where non of this is present, where women are treated equal and doesn't matter who's running the nation as long as they're truly serving the country and people.Though you got to admit that the man is more dominant in most aspects, like for example, it's alot easier for a man to trick a women for his own agenda than for a women to use or trick a man, cause most of the times a women tries to use a man, but the men know they're being used but at the same time  don't care much cause they know they're going to get something out of it (Sex) Again, i don't know how women became like this but I believe the female in all human societies simply adapted to this way of life through out history.

sadly it's in the nature of women to even act less than the man in today's society, this mentality is the result of thousand of years of human male dominance over the female through force.

Azadeh Azad

No white-washing of the Iranian men's male chauvinism, please!

by Azadeh Azad on

Dear Sheema,

I disagree with your point of view. The image Shadi Sadr has portrayed of the Iranian men in her article is absolutely true. All Iranian men (and many Iranian women) are male chauvinistic to different degrees. Of course, not every Iranian man is as silly as Mr. Sedighi, but all, even those who support the Iranian women in their struggle to gain equal rights, are tainted with varieties of male-dominated values and beliefs, conscious or unconscious, manifested or dissimulated (to be perceived only by the keen eyes of a feminist.) Introduce one single Iranian man to me and let me meet with him for a couple of times and I will tell you IN WHICH WAY he is a male chauvinist. Male chauvinism goes much deeper than simply being for Sharia Law. I had expected you to know this.

You say, “Iranian men unfortunately are once again victims of stereotyping and this time not by the American Betty Mahmoody in a movie called “Not without My Daughter”” Well, Sheema jan, this book/film did not stereotype Iranian men, it showed them honestly and as they really were/are when it comes to women. What is reproachable in this book/film is its racism, not its sexism. Betty’s husband was sexist. Please read the book again.

You speak of male chauvinism as crime. Well, that’s your unfortunate choice of the word. You say, “she [Shadi] takes Iranian men to a kangaroo court and denies them all due process rights”. You speak as if there are laws in the Western countries or in Iran that forbid people from being male chauvinists and Iranian men have been accused by her to have transgressed such laws. That’s simply a wrong angle of analysis to adopt.

You say, “Based on Sadr’s statement half the population of the country is guilty of sexual harassment as well as mischievous behavior against Iranian women.” Yes, Shadi Sadr is absolutely right. When it comes to “mischievous behavior,” let me inform you that based on ISLAMIC VALUES that have been imposed on a whole nation for 31 years, MOST IRANIAN HUSBANDS EXPECT THEIR WIVES TO SEXUALLY SUBMIT THEMSELVES TO THEM, AND THAT AT ALL TIMES. AND MOST IRANIAN WOMEN SUFFER THIS TYPE OF RAPE EITHER BECAUSE OF THEIR beliefs or because of the Sharia Law that encourages it. I wish Shadi Sadr had added that most young people in Iran - like the older generation – are results of MARITAL RAPE. Unfortunately Shadi did not say everything that she should have said.

As for the Iranian men in Diaspora, although they might not impose themselves sexually on their wives, they do have a possessive attitude towards them and expect to be served by them in many different ways. I don’t mind if you call Iranian men’s “possessiveness” a “mischievous behavior,” but I'd rather call it a male chauvinist behaviour.

You say, “Those men [Iranians] are mostly innocent of the crimes Sadr is convicting them of. After all Iranian men are not a bol de soupe that everything could go in.” Well, actually the Iranian men ARE A BOL of SOUP that everything related to patriarchy and male-domination Does Go IN IT - from sexual harassment of women on the streets (by ordinary men not necessarily by the Basijis) to beating of women (by male university professors, medical doctors, teachers, etc.) to having the most subtle chauvinistic attitude towards women in their jokes, “friendly teasing" and use of male chauvinistic terms such as “Naa-mard” instead of “Naa-mardom” to “having balls” to “being a Khaleh-zanak”, etc. etc. Again, Iranian women themselves are not exempt of the latter attitudes.

You say, “we can not deny men’s rights by collectively putting them all in the same camp as the Imam. “ Shadi Sadr did not say that Iranian men were all like the Imam (as you put it), but that they are all guilty of oppressing women one way or the other. And she is right. There are degrees of male chauvinism among all Iranian men and you can simply not deny that. Misogyny goes way deeper than just being for Sharia Law or making silly statements about earthquakes.

You say, “most Iranian men support Iranian women in their struggle to gain equal rights.”   Where have you got this “most” from? Are you speaking of the Iranian men in Diaspora or the ones inside Iran? I know that in Diaspora MANY Iranian men are for women’s equal rights with men. But most of them? We do not know, as there has not been a statistical study on this subject. If you use the word “many”, you would be closer to reality. As for the Iranian men inside the country, please be honest and accept that the great majority of Iranian men inside the country are male chauvinistic in gross and obvious ways. Not exactly like Sedighi, but in different ways.

Finally, the main message of Shadi Sadr’s excellent note is to have Iranian men look at themselves in the mirror and stop imagining themselves as better than this Mullah or that Mullah, as male chauvinism manifests itself in thousand and one ways, even among “Iranian men [who] support Iranian women in their struggle to gain equal rights.”

Shadi’s statements as well as mine are facts, not bias. However, portraying the Iranian men as *victims* of an honest and brave feminist such as Shadi Sadr is white-washing the Iranian men’s male-chauvinism.

As you, dear Sheema, are part of the Iranian women's movement, let me finish by saying this: There’s no room for white-washing of *the Iranian men’s male-chauvinism to different degrees* in women’s movement that is supposed to be fighting against male chauvinism!

This is how I came to be here

You haven’t asked me
Why I am here
Why I do what I do

Strange, as a child I was cherished
For absurd requests, pretty airs
I wore my petticoats inside out

I became an unheralded
Scholar, not knowing why
Girls who succeed

Can’t be explained

Then my body became
An object of lust
Pursued, jeered, abused
Before I knew why

But I learned . . .
I became a mother,
The burden of lust settled in

My husband, family, friends
Worshipped me
Nothing I did was ever self-seeking
Nothing ever belonged just to me

I was eminent, I was unknown
I was feted, I had dissolved

This is how I came to be here
Begging for coins

You know the rest
You read the story
Before we were born

This is how I came to be here
Unable to recall
What I intended

The are good and bad news in your post, but I consider the good news brighter than gloomier the bad ones.

NU accepting Iran into CSW should be seen as a byproduct of Europe's debate on banning the veil in public places.

The rising trend in men support of women equal rights is unstoppable. As long as conscious mothers keep preaching the right thing to their children, Ayatollahs have nothing to do.
