On March 25, the Miller Center of Public Affairs hosted the National Debate on Iran at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium. The debate was the second installment of Season Two: "Priorities for a New President." Four debaters, two on each side, had one hour to debate the following resolution: America cannot tolerate a nuclear Iran and must go to any lengths to prevent it. Arguing in favor of the resolution was Elliott Abrams, Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Joshua Muravchik, Visiting Scholar at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. Opposing the resolution was Ambassador Martin S. Indyk, Director of the Brookings Institutions Saban Center for Middle East Policy, and Karim Sadjadpour, associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Margaret Warner, Senior Correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, moderated the debate. Please visit millercenter.org for full debate video and background materials.

Can't Put Price on Democracy!

by electric_samavar on

From the dawn of time, every single tyrannical regime has resorted to violence to silence the voices of opposition and the progressive thinkers have paid the ultimate price to enlighten the masses and eventually cut off the bloody claws of the beast. And we did it 30 short years ago to bring down the Shah's dictatorship, only to be falling into the claws of a far more tyrannical and primitive life-form. So, what is all the fuss about? Unless you have direct financial benefits and selfish agenda or a mental disorder known as liberalism, you must be able to understand the necessity of eradicating this deadly disease; the expansionist 3rd invasion of Arabs (bani omayeh, bani abbas, and now bani khomeini), from the face of earth. No price was too much for freeing the world from Nazi expansion. A conservative estimate indicates over 500,000 Red Army solders died to put a stop to the advancement of a tyrant who would have ended up enslaving them with no boundaries, and NO PRICE is TOO MUCH to pay for ridding the Iranians from these blood-thirsty parasites and the whole world from the danger of mullahs armed with nuclear weapons. You don't need to understand what I.Q. means, let alone to have a number attached to it, to realize that Nuclear weapons in the hands of the vermin who silence their writers and poets by beheading them from Tehran to Paris and to Bonn, demands an urgent need for all democratic nations to unite in order to put and end to this real threat. If you think the cave dwellers of Afghanistan are threats to our way of life, if you started the invasion of Iraq based on lies, DO NOT let them be deterrents to dealing with the real threat coming from Tehran. We entered into a war based on lies, let’s not to make the same mistake of making peace with enemies of humanity based on lies. I assure you the vermin in power will be shaving their beards, wearing lipstick and skirts and hiding in the brothels of the orient at the sound of the first firecracker exploding. Just remember the pathetic TV broadcast by Tariq Aziz on the roof of his ministry bragging about crushing of the US Forces when Baghdad Airport was already occupied and people were pulling down Saddam's statue. Democracy is the biggest prize in life and should not be compromised, not even in the name peace!!!

Who is really hiding under the nuclear turban?

by Nader K (not verified) on

The Islamic Republic's values are based on the "Revolutionary Shi'iah". This is a new phenomenal as the revolutionary Shi'iah uses the peaceful nature of Imam Ali and the martyrdom of Imam Husein (Alavi/Ashura'i)as their cover while in the background they use torture, rape, murder, stoning and development of nuclear bombs to bring about their apocalyptic vision of the world.

There are many sects of Shi'iah. However, this new breed that is in control of Iran has never existed before in this form. This breed of Shi'iah is a danger to the world peace and the world needs to differentiate between them and Iranians who are Shi'iahs of Imam Ali or other imams.

Shi'iah means a follower. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to determine what weapon and ideology these Ayatollahs are following under their facade.

World dominance is displayed on Islamic Republic's flag. A red sword smack dead in the middle heart of the world. There is a reason the sword is red. It is the fire of the “Revolutionary Shi'iah” that is separate from the Shi'iah of Imam Ali and his grand son, Imam Husein as well as other Shi'iah sects. The Revolutionary Shi’iah of the Aytoallahs is the rebirth of Hitler with Atomic Bomb!

Thick Propaganda By Anonymous

by Cyrus_ (not verified) on

I think that Karim Sadjadpour does a fine job in these debates by keeping cool and sticking to the facts. I have seen him in other debates on PBS and find him very knowledgeable. One can not lose his/her control in a debate like this and be labelled as unstable debater.
Margaret Warner is also a fair moderator from what I have seen so far in her special reporting on PBS.
I believe that this video segment should actually stay on this website for a long time so that a lot more Iranians could view this and be able to understand that we can only trust ourselves and no one else.
Because as it has been shown throughout the history: Kas nakharad poshte man, Joz nakhone angosht man. And if others do it would be a GREAT cost.

Set aside dreamers: more American blood and money please!

Israel begs and pushes America

by Jaleho on

through its Israeli-first American traitors to go to war for Israel's sake. But, Israel itself knows that it can not do anything but toothless barking against Iran.

But, America also has tried everything in the past 30 years to defeat Iran and its revolution and it has FAILED pathetically. America couldn't even handle Iraq, a country that after 8 years of war with Iran was already half dead and fully broke.  And Saddam who was so heavily helped by US itself and armed by them to teeth with chemical weapons to defeat Iran, couldn't,  and had to be removed for his incompetence to defeat Iran despite all of the west combined help....he had to be weakened even further through sanctions and two invasions and no-fly zones....and all the other pathetic effort of the US to finally invade an already-dead country with no real leader....YET US FAILED IN IRAQ !! All it accomplished was hundreds of thousands of Iraqi death, over four thousand American dead, and fifty thousands of maimed Americans hopping back to homelss shelters!!

Now Israelis can beg and push US to go and attack Iran. US might have been kissing some Israeli ass for votes in the past, but is certainly not suicidal! No matter how much the Israelis whine, the US will not do their dirty war in Iran. They know that neither can do shit about Iran! Few second rate Iranian missiles given to Lebanon pushed half of Israelis hiding in the shelters. One real Iranian missile will have more Israelis killed in a stampede to escape Israel, or from heart attack than any direct missile damage itself!

A bunch of Clowns

Thick propeganda

Where do I begin? This is a confirmation of our "so called think tanks" lack of understanding about Iran or it's population's mind set. Degrading for Newshour and Margaret Warner to associate with such biased brainwashing of the masses. And Karim was obviously the hand picked lamb among wolfs hiding under sheep skin.

who cares what they think

by Alborzi (not verified) on

Iran in its core is a very independent nation. Never any significant person will negotiate. On the other hand US and Israel are exaggerating the situation. Both of them have capability to destroy Iran without engaging in a war, they also have the capability to retaliate even after a surprise attack.
On the other hand any attack on Iran would be very costly to both, so it will never happen. All these are just scare tactics.

LOL what a joke

by Anonymous2323323 (not verified) on

The only semi decent person in the room was Sadjadpour. The rest were Israeli firsters.

And LOL at Martin indyk pretending to be a dove in this debate. This guy is as hawkish as Eliot Abrams.

Finally!!!

by changiz tehrooni (not verified) on

I love this, finally this planet offers something more stupid and idiotic than Islamic Rebublic. These bunch of ASS-brains are actualy here to prove Khamenie right! haa haa this is really funny. Ok, I acutally believe Khamenie now, is that what you bunch of idiots want us Iranians to do?? to rally behind the Islamic Republic, because you have less of Iran's interests in mind than those F-ing Mullas. This is just sick, and that Iranian guy just standing there like a retard and not responding to their bull shit.

BS

by Anonymous9999 (not verified) on

They are a bunch of idiots. They are more stupid than Mullahs in Iran. The guy(Martin..) said more than 3 times the "Gulf" instead of Persian Gulf and our Iranian Hamvatan was standing there without responding (educating him) to him. as maast kh bar maast.

The link to the article

by Derakhshandeh (not verified) on

The link to the article said:

"Resolved: America cannot tolerate a nuclear Iran and must go to any lengths to prevent it."

So after the debate this was the solution and it was "resolved"?! Is that it? Let's go with Military option? Bah bah, what scholars and debaters!

Denzel's team in The Great Debaters would have kicked their butts! Actually Denzel's team would have been a slam dunk. Any peace loving person would have reached a different "resolution".

How far we have sunk

by OmidKarimi on

that this subject is even being debated. Btw, is this a debate?? It seems like a gathering of a bunch of putz liars meeting no resistance what so ever with the BS that is jumping out of their snake like holes.

Martin Indyk is the father of the religion "Iran demonization".
