by Esmail Nooriala
22-Nov-2008

The land of hypocrisy!

by Ajam (not verified) on

This "beautiful land of the free" was founded by the slave owning fathers who believed in freedom for every person (a definition that excluded slaves and black people in general). And pilgrims who gave thanks to their god while committing genocide against the native Americans -- by distributing smallpox-contaminated blankets, murdering them by the millions. And, was carried forward by peace-loving soldiers who carpet-bombed Dresden to the ground an nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing and maiming hundreds of thousands of "Japs." And was ushered into the 21st century by freedom-loving masters who made every attempt to bring the "hajis" and "rag-heads" freedom and democracy through "shock and Awe," the Gitmo and Abu Ghraib...
Really, what's not to love?!!

Re: Realist: Your argument

Re: Realist:

Your argument is fallacious and misleading.

The Soviet Union had more client states than the US, and interfered in the affairs of the most of Eastern European countries, militarily and financially, however, the satandard of living and liberty in the Soviet Union, even at the expense of those client states, did not improve. Having client states does not translate into prosperity for your own citizens and for your country if the core ideology of government is the tyranny of the proletariat.

1- Europe and Canada can

by Khosrow (not verified) on

1- Europe and Canada can only dream about having such as sophisticated Democratic system like the U.S. Canada is not even a fully independent country (British Monarchy), but Switzerland is the closest to the American system, and that’s why like the American system, it has survived so long.

2- There is multi party system in the U.S, but obviously like most of the democratic world, it has two big ones. France has Conservative and Socialist, England has labor and conservative, Canada has conservative and liberal, Germany has Social democrats and Christian Democrats, and so on. The U.S even has a communist party, and libertarian, and green, and others. A system where you have multiple strong different parties who have strong ideological differences couple result in some political zoo, but it’s important that a democratic country allows different parties from different backgrounds to form and express their views, and that’s what U.S and other free countries do.

3- Anti Americanism and a new generation: Because of the globalization process initiated by America, many nations in the world have advanced and gain self confidence. Those nations want a world that is not ran by a single power, and they have the right to do so. That’s not “Anti Americanism”, rather, “Anti Unilateralism”. I think the mistake that Bush did was that he didn’t realize that, thus resulted in some anti American sentiment. However, U.S still the superpower, and a force for good, and the world realizes that, but they don’t want it to act alone.

4- Hakim comments” 1- U.S is a country that’s good for all, rich and poor. 2- False, then how about credit? This country is run on credit, that’s why it doesn’t matter aometimes if you don’t have cash. 3- False also, there are many programs in place, SSI, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment….it has done a much better social protection job than all the communists and socialist countries combined, although its not even any of those! 4- Exaggerated big time. The unsafest city in the world is Moscow. Furthermore, that’s the price a free society pays for being free, and tolerating all kinds of cultures, including gang culture.
5- That’s the sign of enforcement of law, although I agree that they need to make some crimes not punishable by jail.
6-Absolutel BS. It’s the best system the world has ever seen.
7- True. 8- It is the best system. 9-I agree.

Realist, absolute misguided logic. How can you blame other nations for the crimes they committed to their own people on the U.S. So what if some of them had good relations with the U.S? Are they not to blame? What about all the countries that strongly opposed the U.S and capitalism, and had some of the worst human rights records in history? Countries such as Islamic regime of Iran, USSR, Cuba, China, Eastern Europe, ..those people enslaved their population. Also, how about the list of courtiers that the U.S helped to liberate and build, and helped establish democratic regimes:
Germany
Japan
Italy
Philippines
S Korea
France
Holland
Austria
Denmark
Norway
Eastern Europe currently
Taiwan
Former USSR Republics

Everyone should take responsibility for themselves. How on earth can you blame an entire population for putting up with a dictator on the U.S? Americans didn’t ask anyone’s help when they rose against tyranny, did they? And they didn’t turn down the help they got during their rise (France), did they? That shows that each population is responsible for their own destiny, unless they get occupied by another. The U.S obviously didn’t invade Brazil, or Chile, Or Argentina, ….or any of the above. So blame them.

The best proof that the U.S system is, by far, the best, is that it has survived for all this time, and kept this country a democratic one, and has been an inspiration and model for the rest of the world. There is no better proff than that.

At what cost?

Can you tell me the price that the rest of the world have paid so that this nation that you are so randy about to be created?

life, liberty and pursuit of happiness

Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. This is the core of the Idea of America. 250 years ago the founding fathers, they discovered this simple beautiful truth. What is Islamic society based on?; death, Servitude and pursuit of mental depression.
After Obama's election my love for this land of the free is all new again.

USA, just like a coin, has 2 sides

by Hakim (not verified) on

1- USA is a good society, if you have money or if you have a good job that pays good.

2- It becomes a nightmare if you run out of money, losing your job, and can not fine a new one.

3- There are very few social protections for undesirables.

4- USA has the biggest crime rate in the world. Most cities are not safe at nights.

5- USA has the biggest prison system in the world. one in every 34 people in US are in prison.

6- Political system in USA is corrupt. It seems people don't have much of representatives in Washington. Interest groups say the last word.

7- On the positive side again, in USA you can flourish. The best schools and companies will lead you to be the best.

8- USA maybe not be the best system that human has created, but it has been the most efficient one.

9- I wish for a better system. One that not only those at the top enjoy, but all the people have a share of wealth to enjoy life.

He never responds to the comments to his laataaelaat, which somehow appear on the site with some degree of regularity. Ignoring comments about your brain droppings shows a high level lack of decorum and netiquette on Nooriala's part. Can others please chime in and answer this question? What is the difference between Noorial's comment, "پس، لااقل در نزد من، انتقاد از آمريکا فقط کار کسی می تواند باشد که نخست بپذيرد که سيستمی بهتر از سيستم اجتماعی زنده و کارآيند در آمريکا هنوز در هيچ کجای تاريخ و جغرافيا بوجود نيامده است." and Khamemie's diktat that only those who accept Velaayateh Faghih can offer "criticism" of the government of the Islamic Republic policies?!!!
I keep asking myself why do I bother reading such drivel? OK, I admit it. I'm a blog junkie. That must be it.

The best...?!

by Ajam (not verified) on

Isn't it rather late to fall in love with the American system all over again?! Evidently, judging by your "analysis" of Iranian political strata, you are stuck in the 20th century mentality, but at a time when even American pundits are working hard trying to figure out how to right what's wrong with their system?!
Sorry to have interrupted your day-dream, but what is it exactly that makes it the "best social system ever built by the humankind?" Is it the economy, the human rights record, politics and freedom or... all of the above?!

Several Points

by Jahanshah Rashidian on

There are several points to add to Dr. Nooriala’s analysis:

1-- It is true that a tactical (?) alliance exists between many communists, if not all, and the IRI because of their antagonism to the West, especially to the US. Ironically, this alliance has more impact when a hardliner like Ahmadinejad is in office, a Muslim fanatic with largely anti socialist characteristic—we see the sympathy between him and atheist Hugo Chavez.

2 – Anti western phobia is sowed in our political culture with the rise of Toudeh Party under Stalinism. This imposed culture was a command of the Big Brother, not only propagated in Iran, but also in the West by the Western European Communist parties. It was short after the World War 2 "an imperialistic war" and a suitable atmosphere for the "anti imperialist" left – the communist parties were at peak of their popularity and close to to take over political   power in France and Italy.

3 – Anti American sensibilities especially strengthened during the Vietnam War and later the Iraqi invasion. I know this increasing feeling in Germany. German new generation would attribute as guilt to US warmongering politicians as to the Nazis. During the Iraqi invasion millions of young Germans were demonstrating against the invasion.

4 -- The anti-Americanism is believed to be much worse than what has gone before during the reign of Euro-Communist parties in 60s and 70s. Analysts warn that a whole generation of America-haters is being created; a European generation which they say believes Americans do not care about "others'lives." Anti Americanism grew under the new liberalism which started by Reagnism and continued by Bush administration after a relative truce under Clinton.

5 –Efficency of democracy in the two- party-system in the US is far behind that of the multi-party-system in other Western democracies. The two-party systeme reduces the open ended social conflicts to compromises between the duo. The domain of democracy is neglected where it should be and the parties assimilate to the bases for merely tricky political clubs, where they recruit voters. They lack philosophical and political ientity with social responsiblity. The guiding philosophy of both parties is rooted in the idea that making conditions good for corporate owners (investors) will provide for all Americans. Under this philosophy, called neo-liberalism, removing all laws that constrain business profits is considered beneficial to the economy and to the U.S. public. In other words, that means slashing government programs and laws which do not directly benefit owners of capital. Such a system automatically creates more poverty, inflation, more social injustices and has no sense of humanity. Snce the advent of Reaganism, we see drastic and devastating cuts in spending in all areas of life, whether for housing, schools, public hospitals, public transportation, the infrastructure, job programs, welfare, etc. This is while welfare system in Europe is an important task of state to maintain and only through that social poverty can be better fought back.

6 -- Capitalism has been the maintenance of a sizeable pool of unemployed workers living on the edge of poverty who are desperate for jobs. It keeps workers competing with each other to get jobs, allowing corporate owners to keep wages low. This was first described by Karl Marx, the founder of scientific socialism, as an essential weapon used by capitalists to keep down wages. When this political and economic system is judged by future inhabitants of the planet, this policy will be judged, correctly, as one of the greatest crimes against humanity.

7 -- Saying all that does not mean there is a better alternative to this system. State planification failed through its rough nature of dictatorship, mangle of initiative and motivated participation of economical factors. Social democratic systems, like those existing in the Western Europe, seem the best alternative to protect people based on democracy and more responsibility for the state institutions.

8 -- I conclude: a relative ideal existing system seems far to be an Americam one. If the US wants to avoid an eventual collapse of its socio-economic system in the next decades, it has to follow the example of Social Democracy in Europe.

Questions for you:

by Shahriar on

1) Why do you mention U.S.A. specifically? Why not Switzerland? Or Canada?

2) Isn't a system like Italy or Canada, where you see dynamic rise and fall of political parties and minority governments, better than U.S.A.?

3) No mention of how it is going to evolve in future? How about grassroots democratic movements without leadership, as we have seen cases of it in demonstrations against WTO and environmental movements? Can't we start visualising local grassroots governance without the current hierarchy? There have been instances of decision making (at the city level) without the need for leadership, in Milwakee and Berkley. Can we see that as a future model for governance?

Open society vs. closed ones

by Arash Monzavi-Kia on

The American system is an Open Society, with all the good and bad associated with such a social form. As far as history can tell, the tradition of Election and Choice was first institutionalized in ancient Athens, and then strengthened in Ancient Rome.

The rennaisence republics of Italy rekindled that flame in the 15th century, after the long and bleak Middle Ages. That torch was then passed to England during its protestant/republican revolution, and has since conquered most of the Western world, including the US of A.

You are correct in saying that the Open Society is the 'best' social form that humanity has ever achieved, and as such is worthy of emulation. However, there are serious obstacles for the 3rd world countries, including the colonial past which make them suspicious of the West and its traditions.
