I think you're question is why did Islam gained a foothold in Iran, since there seems to be an Islamic core that manages to produce fanatics.

First, I like to make the point about present Islam problem. I think it may be misleading to start looking at the Islam problem from 1400 years ago. My personal feeling about the last 28 years in Iran has proven to me that the raw and painful history of Islam that we witnessed in our lifetime can not be a 1400 year old phenomenon. The naked barbarism that we have witnessed was too immature to have survived 1400 years of assimilation into Iranian culture.
I am certain that it would serve us all better to start the search from present day to the past, and not from 1400 years ago to present. I am certain that today's Shia Islam scourge is directly related to the ascendancy of the first Turkic speaking dynasty, the Safavids in late 1400's. This par of our history has never been published or taught in our school system under Shah or even now, many people are just not ware of it. What took place in late 1400 and 1500s under imported Shia Islam, literally extinguished Iranian vitality and life for centuries and brought us the likes of Qajar dynasty which could be best descibed as the sleeping period of the Iranian culture.

Second, is the issue of changing population demography that predisposes the Farsi speaking nation to Islamic tendencies. This goes back to the intial breakdown of Iranian order against Islamic invaders 1400 years ago. The event was followed by massive immigrations in and out of then Iran and continued through the next 1400 years, and was exacerbated by subsequent Mongol invasions and all other minor, but continuous populatiopn movements. However, the core of today's Islam problem can be traced back to Safavids and the imported Shia Islam and their bloody implementation of it.

Add to this, the dormant 90%+ population of rural Iran in 1979 who thought of themselves as Shia muslims and were effectively engaged, activated and were brought to the political scene by foreign Shia clergy, you would have millions of supposedly Islamic fanatics. What transpired in the last 28 years, especially the war with Iraq, has been a painful experience for these newly arrived to the scene. They are still on the learning curve (albeit some are slow in learning) and come across as stupid Islamic fanatics.

There is a difference between now and late 1400s when Shia barbarism was rampant, in todays world you can not stay isolated, no matter how hard you try to, especially if you need to feed and employ 70 million people. Again, time is on your side.

Have nice weekend.

I do remember cinema rex incident and how it set the stage to move the demonstrations to the next phase. I also remember that the islamist thugs did that job and blamed it on the shah.

You say "The more repressive and barbaric the Islamists, the more anti-islamic will be the new Iranian identity". I think you should reconsider. There is historic proof that shows otherwise.

For example, the barbaric Arab invaders of 1400 years ago were repressive too, but they succeeded in Islamizing Iran. What you say is true, but only in the order of a few decades. After that it will be too late. For every anti-Islam individual that rises, there are 10 fanatic moslems being manufactured by the IRI.

THIS is my greatest concern.

About Shah's time: There is a lot to be said about the reasons for not hearing "the good" deeds of the regime. I would think it had to do with the "open political space" campaign that was talked about in in late '70s. As a result, regime had a defensive and a compromising posture. Example: remember Cinema REX incident in Abadan in '78 ? Islamists did that, one of the perpetrators run away to Iraq and was captured by Saddam. Saddam, in turn, offered him to the Iran, but everyone believed this crime was committed by the regime and the government could not convince anyone otherwise.

OK, present stuff; I do not understand your concern about time running out. So far as I see it, time is our side. There is a struggle going on against Islam, or the extremist aspect of it and that will define the new Iranian nationalism. If you really like to eradicate Islam from Iran, it would be good to have IRI in power for another 300 years.

People's culture, nationalism, or self identity are defined by struggles against common adversaries. This is a historical fact. The struggle against Islam started with the ascendancy of Islamist in '79. Iranian identity will be defined in this struggle in the years to come. The more repressive and barbaric the Islamists, the more anti-islamic will be the new Iranian identity. Time is on your side.

I agree with you regarding Shah's goals. I wish I knew more about his (shah's) side of story during the revolution when I was a teen and demonstrating against him. Unfortunately, and I keep pointing this out, that regime did not have ANY propoganda machine to counter the many lies and false arguments that deceived me and others.

Back to the present! I want to agree with your last paragraph, i.e., that violence is not a solution. I like your reasoning.  But I hear this nagging inside me. This fear that the clock is ticking toward midight and we don't have much time left.

Another 30 years of IRI will not only have devastating effects on the economical scales, but also on the cultural levels. Iran is being de-Iranianized. 30 years from now, our generation will be gone. Maybe a few of us will be left. Those future generations will be Islamized with none of us there to counter it. I worry about this most.

I agree with you, a great deal of my personality and world view is formed in contrast to IRI as well. I do understand your concern about length of the IRI decay process, the squandering and depletion of national resources. This was the grand plan of the Shah's time to use the oil/gas resources to build the infrastructure on a large scale, on the road to industrialization. This also required open access to industrialized and the entire (free) world, which the regime provided better than most post-industrial countries today.

That was then, unfortunately we had a set back. The world is also different today and there are other ways toward industrialization. The most important natural resource for Iran is the people, the educated ones, more than oil and gas. As you are well aware, with current economic pressures in the post-industrialized countries to transfer manufacturing and services to low labor cost countries, there will be plenty of opportunities for foreign investments and technology transfers to Iran when a "normal" system takes hold and opens the door. Just look at the east and south Asian countries (china and India being the larger ones). In the 70s, Shah's regime, despite very close relations with US, had to lobby GM (and other technology companies) to invest in assembly plants in Iran. Today, taking your manufacturing plant off shore is more or less a requirement in any business plan, otherwise the company will not survive. The road to industrialization is still wide open, we need educated people and more importantly; a COMPETENT and IDEOLOGY-FREE government that can open the doors to the world.

I also have a hard time to think what could be worse than IRI, it depends on one's point of view. I think the challenge would be not to fall for the vicious cycle of violence. IRI has pushed the pendulum so far in polarizing the Iranian society and to some extend the world, that it would be so easy to pay them back with their own savagery. The better way may be to marginalise them by hanging the guilt of their savagery and ideology on their shoulders in the future and point it out to them when need to. We already have an occupied country with a foreign ideology in charge with some support. What could be worse is total dissolution of the country with more bloodshed.

I agree with what you said. The question then becomes a cost/benefit analysis. I think allowing the regime to decay from within, which began when it was born, and waiting say for 100 years will cost Iran more than if it is overthrown, even violently, within a decade.

One could ask what about 50 years? 30 years? At which point do we have the optimum results? Nobody knows! There are so many factors involved as you know.

But my concern is the Pakistanization of Iran. Iran could be a great nation with its people living good lives, in par with South Korea or spain, at the very least. But once the oil is gone and perhaps the gas too, then what are we left with? The stage will be set for another Ghajar type of era, or pakistanization, or as the shah used to say an Iranistan.

I admit that I may be wrong and that a lot of my beliefs are based on my feelings around the IRI and what they are doing to my country, and I DO know this behavior was exactly our downfall 30 years ago.

I have thought about this. But 30 years ago we had SOMETHING to lose! Today IRI has left us with nothing to loose.

Give me a few worst case scenarios, maybe in my hatred towards the IRI, I have missed a few bad possiblities that has not crossed my thoughts. But I think the IRI IS the worst case scenario! What else could get be worst than another 30 years of IRI rule?

Things are obviously different now than in 1979, but I am not sure if there is any clear advantage today.
The main difference between now and then is that, in '79, regime (monarchy) capitulated. They literally handed over control in a silver plate. The security services, especially the army, declared neutrality (only to be slaughtered later by the Islamists). In contrast today, you have an ideological core with no intention of compromise, or power sharing. All evidence indicates that this ideological core has been shrinking over the past 3 decades. Ideally, one would like to wait for complete decay of this system, but this is an exponential decay and the tail end will take too long to be practical. There are also other factors and interests that may and will intervine at any point during this interval.

The main goal should be the process of building the Iranian identity for the ever shrinking ideological core of this Islamist system. Their demoralized soldiers are turning away in droves and they will be looking everywhere for new ideas. This will be the defining time for a new nationalism based on demise and total rejection of Islam in Iran. This is a lengthy process and most likely will not be complete even after demise of the Islamists republic.

You brougth a good point about when the time comes all "Velayat-e Vaghih" crowd will seek cover and influence with the secular Shia crowd. I overlooked that.

I am not fully convinced though. But I will debate your point with myself. For now the thought that crosses my mind is that don't you think things are going to be different this time?

I mean we HAD learnt our lessons. I think people are going to react violently to any politically secular mullah wanting to cross the line. In 1979, we were are like sheeps, but not so today.

Also, I believe they really can turn the Pasdaran and Basig against the IRI, which could become a turning point.

I don't think the critical mass you are talking about will ever be reached as long as we have oil and therefore as long as they can keep people from starving. That is my major concern.

If we accept Islam as a foreign adversarial and anti-Iranian phenomenon then there is no reason to compromise with another Islamic component against a more potent one.

Today, the odds are against them and not us. The opposition has been gathering momentum from the day Islamist republic assumed power and the momentum has been increasing. As pressure increases from all sides, time is also on our side.

The big risk in forming alliance, or compromise, with another Islamic component is that, when the time comes, all "Velayat-e Vaghih" crowd will seek cover and influence with the secular Shia crowd and depending how much of a majority you have, you may lose again to this crowd, and in the process you provided them a new life or beginning. What is the point then ?

Let them decay naturally for as long as possible, once the critical mass is reached internally, it will change spontaneously. But, the outside forces have to keep up the pressure without compromise. You and I should not fancy the old times and think we can quicken this decay process for our own satisfaction. Lets think long term and do the best we can to eliminate this scourge.

Thank you for your reply. I know that you may have found it contradictory that I am a firm anti-Islamist, even anti-Islam, and yet I am suggesting to enlist the clergy in the fight against IRI.

I don't know how much you know about the Iranian clergy. But they are a few Ayatolahs that are truely "roohaani" and vehemently for the separation of government and religion. They have nothing against the pre-Islamic era of our history, like most of the IRI has. I am still against their views at the philosophical level, as I am not a fan of Islam in general. But politically, they too want a secular form of government

So in my view, by the very nature of their beliefs, they could be trusted to help with the overthrow of IRI. You must remember three things:

1. They are all in house arrest by IRI and in complete isolation from the outside world, if not killed. That's why we hear so little from them. In my view, they cannot be considered an "insider" as related to IRI at all.

2. The extend of their influence on the religious masses AND even on the Padaran and Basij AND on the average semi-religion Iranian is vast and cannot be denied.

3. They DO want and believe in a secular form of government.

Please remember the role of Vatican in Poland. It was a positive one. These ayaotllahs are natural allies with us. I say so what if they believe in Islam?

You stated: "no Mullah wants a secular and democratic constitution, no Mullah accepts secularisation of education, administration, social life and in short, a separation of Church and State."

I disagree. I think the IRI has damaged the image of Ayatolahs in a way that you say these things in an absolute way and apply it to all Ayatolahs. I am sure there are some ayatolahs that are in house arrest today by the IRI, specifically because they are FOR the separation of chruch and state.

I invite you to do some further research in this area, the results of which may surprise you.

I strongly believe that in the political battle against the IRI, with the odds being against us, this segment of the clergy which is being surpressed by the IRI could be a formidable ally for our cause. I say this despite of my differences with them.

Following your comment-exchanges with some adamant pro-IRI followers on other topics, I see a self-contradictory lapse in your latter comment, by proposinr an alliance with some outsider clergy. What is the gurantee for such an alliance? How can we trust a non Iranian entity, called Sayyed, Mullah, Muslim...?

The Constitution of 1905 was not secular, but preliminary influenced by the clergy, in my view, that was the advantage the clergy institutionally had and could use it since. Being this constitutional advantage in the hands of different generations of Mullahs until the current ruling IRI, they were all an obstacle in front of democracy, modenisation, and progress, no matter if clergy was in political power or not.

Today, like any ruling social class in power, this ruling clergy has also inner conflicts, also with those Mullahs who are autsider--see dismissal of Sharitmadari right after the revolution, dismissal of Montazeri, dubious dead of Ahmad Khomeini...But no insider is different from outsiders when it goes on an application of secularism.

Generally, in political power or clerical power, no Mullah wants a secular and democratic constitution, no Mullah accepts secularisation of education, administration, social life and in short, a separation of Church and State. "Al-Islam w'al dawla" bans this separation and no skeptiker can rewrite the history of Islamic Caliphate which was based on compromises and skirmishes among power hungry ruling class: the tactical peace of early Caliphs with non-Muslims was a followed by bloody attacks and massacres on non-Muslims.

To neutralise IRI's repressive organs, other tactics can be used, i.e., a general amnesty for those who have not committed any crime. A South Africa model of amnesty is better than keeping ideological relics of apartheid.

After the fall of the IRI, Iranians have a conscious right to end with Islam for ever. What is the effective price to understimate this right by sharing their victory with othe "outsider" Mullahs? Furthermore,  a new democratic and secular state in Iran must fulfil a necessary renaissance for the region. In another term, deislamisation of all Iranian space as an example for the Islamic world. This is the core difference between a real secular regime and what is demagogically claimed by IRI deserters like Ganji or IRI’s Islamic opposition like MOK.

I disagree with you. What I said is the exact opposite of "let's use khomeini to get rid of the shah."

The segment of the clergy I talked about has nothing in common with Khomeini. Khomeini wanted a government ruled by "valie faghih". The clergy I am talking about wants the opposite which is the separation of government and mosque. They are a legitimate ally in my opinion.

Additionally, the IRI is not the same than the Shah. The ideological differences are too many.

We can't just ignore a potentially powerful ally who unlike khomeini are politically secular.

You say:
"I am refering to the Shia clergy, yes the clergy....
we need each other in our fight against the IRI. We both see the IRI as a common enemy of Iran",

Sounds awful like when people said: "Let's use Khomeini to get rid of Shah"

sorry.....NO.

Well said Nooriala...

by jamshid on

I agree. However, even if a great number of those who are in the gray area join the "enhelaal talab" segment of the opposition, the IRI may still stand.

The role of another segment of the opposition has always been ignored by the seculars. A segment that is more powerful than the secular opposition AND can be our best allies.

I am refering to the Shia clergy, yes the clergy. Those ayotollahs who completely oppose the IRI and its political ideology, and who, like us seculars, strongly believe in the separation of the govenment and religion.

Their voice is silenced by the IRI more than that of any other segment of the opposition. Why? Because they have the kind of influence to move the masses in Iran, that we the none-religious opposition don't and won't have in the near future. They can even turn a good number of the Pasdaran and Basij against the IRI.

I think the IRI fears them the most. It has taken extra precautions to silence their voice. Have you ever asked yourself where are the "other" ayatollahs? Why we never hear anything from them depsite of their vehement opposition to the IRI?

This very powerful segment of our opposition to the IRI should be tapped into and brought into the foreground. We are natural allies because we both believe in the separation of govenment and mosque.

It is true that we the none-religious people don't see eye to eye with an "ayatollah", even the brand that believes in the separation of government and religion. But we need each other in our fight against the IRI. We both see the IRI as a common enemy of Iran.

I for one, am willing to silence myself from uttering another anti-Islamic word, if it could help the cause of such alliance. I think it is the only solution short of waiting another 100 years for any meaningful change to take place.

Platform and Regarding totalitarian regimes

by OFM (not verified) on

Nice write up. The grass root for a secular democratic government for Iran is as solid as rock. It is true that it has not shown itself as an organized entity yet, however, in its foundation has thrown away uniting under ANY ideological model. And, it is moving speedily toward platform movement such as Iran for gender equality and Iran for Human Rights.

A Secular Democratic Federal Republic and new constitution is wish of all true Iranians.

Meanwhile, all totalitarian regimes such as Islamic Republic of Iran wish Iranians to forget their crimes. As we Iranians move forward to next phase, we can not afford to forget their barbaric crimes against Iranians and humanity. Their crimes must continually be exposed so that these horrors and crimes will never ever be permitted in Iran.

REPLY : KHODI & GHAIRE KHODI

by Faribors Maleknasri M.D. (not verified) on

I find the arguments all logical. they are exactly the same I wnted to bring but didnt dare myself. besides I am not so firm in formulating. however the iranian nation - I mean the ones who live in IRI, have founded it und will protect it until reappearing of 12th imam(s9 - has applied the method in the years 1978/79 to the devilish System and has achieved the conquery of blood over sword. The nation meant the devilsh system is no legal one, the parliament was not voted by poeple and so on. so they did not pay even a SHAHI for watersupply for electricity for Fon for nothing. the bankers, the custum, a great part of the Army they did not work for the illegal system. The most big waight was brought by OIL-Workers. they did not give even one drop oil on racial systen of southt africa, they did not give even one drop oil to system accupieng Palestine and they did not give even one drop oil an the devilish army. As those devils called for emergency no one followed. More than that. they all came nights out of thier houses. And the devils shut down as many as they could and all that didnt help. So the devils had to go. some were taken to be gone. Now in 2007 = 1386 the argumentation - well i am sorry but i must write: - the logical argumentation does not apply to the conditions today. The ones who acted as described 1978/79 were in Iran. The ones who advise the non objective / non existent OPPOSITION to act as those 30 Million "fanatic Mullahs" did in 1978/79....well it seems they advise to an IMPOSSIBLE MISSION. One can of course urge: it doesnt matter at all, are the Missions which bushy bushy advises to perform somehow possible? Of course not. last but not least: KHDI: is the one who does not care what the enemy is barking and grunting. GHAIRE KHODI: are the enemies. they may have Iranian papers or iranian AND other papers and or only other papers. these Ghaire Khodies just leak the mouth of the enemies after the enemies have vomitted. they repeat just words of diversity and practice most unlogical critisism. A new Zone is missing

by Jahanshah Rashidian on

I agree with you, in order to begin a new stage in our political struggle, we have to think outside the IRI. Yet, if we want to abandon the “grey zone” that you correctly attributed to many Iranians, we merely need an appropriate zone with another colour, say red or bleu, to present as the correct zone. In another word, Iranians finally need a notional, democratic and secular movement or front or any oppostion entity with strong hands and wills to oppose the IRI entirely.

Saddly, we do not have such an established entity. So, in struggle for a democratic and secular republic in Iran, which is also my best version, some irresolute people or opportunist opposition groups may fall into the trap of the"grey zone".

We do not have a free zone for this business-like opposition and of course more particularly for all Iranian freedom lovers. This is our big missing and our only malaise which prolongs IRI's parasitic life. And while the “grey zone” serves its particular function for each particular individual in particular circumstances, it remains an ideal zebra crossing for any totalitarian regime. Different IRI's factions stand on the both sides of this zebra crossing to curb or bargain with the pedestrians. This is the grey zone, where the IRI and its various factions can maintain the status quo. Another free zebra crossing is missing.
