Tar-zan Farangi

Great Persian music performance by non-Iranians

Remember that great clip of Lloyd Miller performing on Iranian TV in the 1960s? In this clip, non-Iranian ethnomusicologists, Dr. Miller (US) and Dr. Jean During (France), play Tombak and Tar in what appears to be a recent concert at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

At some point in the begining he is playing the Tar from Shajarian's Zemestan concert. That is one of my favorite pieces of music. Thanks for posting it. They are great!

Dear Flora

Thank you so very much for your timely and important correction, and the information you added which would enrich this post.  I'm glad JJ made the necessary changes quickly, too.  Thank you for telling us about Dr. During's excellent and dedicated work for Iran and Iranian music and musicians.  If you ever have leads or information about others who were instrumental in Iranian arts and music in Iran, drop me a line and I would be happy to help search, find, and introduce such great "Honorary Iranians."  Thanks again.

The man who plays the tar is not American, but the great French ethnomusicologist, professor Jean During. He has done many researches in the Iranian music and, back in the 70's and early 80's, made a great deal of effort in order to make the classical Iranian music known to the Western world. He also used to teach classical guitar at the conservatory of music in Tehran, has recorded and distributed many rare and authentic pieces of music from every corner of Iran, and written many books about the sacred music of our country.

I am not sure what genre of Persian/Iranian music this is, but I can tell that much that I don't get tired of playing this peacefull and melancholic music whole day.
