As you can see (if you actually saw the clip,) Clooney says "to ke FARSI harf nemizani..."
In the context of what he says, in FARSI, using the title for this page is correct.
Don't be a perso-nazi!!!

I played it over and over and still couldn't figure out what the heck he said at the end of the clip. He could have done a much better job with a few minutes of practice.

Look in 'Guive Mirfendereski' archive for the following articles and argue your case with him. I am convinced there is nothing wrong with using the word 'Farsi' when speaking English.

Jahanshah Javid,

Why do some try to insist in trying to change the name of the Persian language into something else in the English language? And why is it that no other language names are being changed in the world and only this one language's name is tried to be changed in the English language?

Why do you support it? I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

Mr. Editor of Iranian .com (is it Jahanshah Javid?),

Why do you call it "Farsi" in the English language? I really don't understand.

If anything, Iranians should know how damaging it is to call the name of their language in English into a strange and new name. Why?

Please tell me why you call it "Farsi" (when speaking English, by changing its name) and I will explain why it is damaging.

Darius, Thanks for the response. But your observation does not apply elsewhere in the world (American, English, Australian, New Zealandish). Actually the effort and emphasis has been to change the name of the language of Afghanistan into the new name of "Dari" in the English language, it doesn't support your observation quoted above. Linguists (the unbiased and non-politically motivated ones) must have a big laugh with this ridiculous charade. Is it not called "Englsih" in India?

To New Zealandi

by Darius Kadivar on

I did not use the term Farsi, It is the Editor who used it to describe the video. I know that "Persian" is the correct term in English. That said most US films since the series JAG with Catherine Bell seem to make this mistake frequently. I do not think it is due to prejudice but lack of knowledge. It seems also to be a generic term to avoid having to distnguish between Afghani and Persian when depicted in American films unfortunately.

Best,

DK
