Farhood Azarsina

Jailed for kissing woman's breast

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC): A St. John's university student has been sentenced to two months in jail after sexually assaulting a student in a campus elevator. Farhood Azarsina, 25, had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual assault. He will spend another 18 days in jail, on top of time already served, a provincial court judge ruled January 28.

Azarsina pushed a woman's arms aside and then kissed one of her breasts in an incident at Memorial University's main campus last September. At the time, Azarsina admitted to the incident, but said it was "nothing serious." The Crown had asked for a three-month sentence, but judge David Orr decided on two months. Azarsina was credited with 42 days for the amount of time he had already spent in custody.

Brian Wentzell, the lawyer acting for Azarsina, a graduate engineering student from Iran, had argued for a discharge, on grounds that a conviction could hurt his client's academic career. The victim in the case told the court earlier this month that she has trouble sleeping, and that the experience was devastating.

what would have been his punishment if it happened in Iran?
by aaj sr (not verified) on Sun Feb 03, 2008 07:38 AM CST

-if he was married?
-if she was married?
Any one knows?

Would he get more punishment when he is back in Iran?

* The possibility for such lapsus to happen somewhere in Iran is very near by zero.
Arguments:
1. In that country go girls and women mostly i9n group, not only by thier own.
2. If a sinlge Girl/woman is allready in Lift, no other man enters. If he does so leaves the famale the lift.
3. Since in Iran the females have to be BA HEJAB so consequently the men are aware of the sideeffects of thier undisered activities.
4. the honorable Iranian nation knowes and acts up to principles of : Better prevent than heal. is it wrong?
there are of course even more arguments but the fact is: the ones who know about the situation in Iran - I proposely do not mention the words ISLAMIC REPUBLIC of IRAN - do also know that the punishment of such actions in that country is much more serious than in a western country in the self named "free world".
Normaly if a person has made her/himself guilty by an criminal offence so are the pwersonal identities not given on the public and are not allowede to be published. This is part of human rights. But in the free western world some beings are less free and consequently have less rights and thier PERSONALITY gets regzularly raped purposely by given possibility. Such as in this case. Greeting.

• I mentioned that I walk(ed) with a girlfriend, sister, another lady co-worker in Tehran’s streets, no one has dared to say anything to the female who was with me (I would like to add again here that I am an average person in terms of height and weight).

• I mentioned what the dude did was wrong. Anon fool did not object for using a word such as dude, but found objectionable to making a spelling mistake. English is my third language, you fools.

• In general, comparing Iran of today to Iran of before revolution; one could say, khar haman khar ast, faghat paloon avaz shodeh. No shit, before was better, Not!!

• I agree that non-iranian.com should NOT have displayed this idiot’s face and ruin his future further. There are other Ey-ranians who have committed crimes and iranian.com is not displaying their faces or records.

• No one answered my question of how much “exposing” is permissible. Anon fool, please answer this question.

• Trashy TV and Internet sites do not help. Trashy girls in Western cultures are plenty. This dude should have looked around and got laid easily. The worst he could do is to buy a girl a drink and/or dinner, or pay a girl one hundred dollars to fu-k not only her body, but also her mind. These girls come to you in Canada and Western countries; one does not need to go to them. Just walk in the evenings in downtown Toronto or Vancouver, they come at you like a herd of sheep’s. LOL

• To many dudes who do not know better, fools, look up the police record or go to your city and look up the daily police record which is public record. When I was in the U.S., the University where I graduated used to publish worse incidents than this dude’s case. Now, do not give me this shit that the most fucked up society is the freest society.

• How much a girl can expose? Take into account the size.

• If a man exposes a little of his private parts (not the main one), he gets arrested for indecent exposure, areeh ya nah? So is this double standard?

• Do not judge this young man, he was raised by his mother and has a sister. As you know, our mothers have more influence on us than our fathers.

• I disagree that this man’s future is ruined for good. He must be a good student to graduate from a good university and get accepted to a Ph.D. program. He made a mistake. Next time he will pay someone or buy a dinner to get laid.

• Many University drop outs have succeeded in life by creating good companies and products. One does not learn much in a Ph.D. program, all the learning takes place in undergraduate programs. Ph.D. students learn on their own and bust their heads to pass the damn comprehensive exams.

• Many university Presidents have criminal records of drinking, smoking pot, etc. Heck the Presidents of the U.S. have done all the wrong things, I was in the U.S. when Clinton was the President. You fools, keep on harping on some non-sense and relating it to our country.

he may be mentally sick!?

by Anonymous man (not verified) on

Is this a joke or something like candid camera? Did somebody put this here for attention or whatever?
If it is true then this guy needs a medical treatment or several months of sex and harassment therapy. I know of other nationalities who have been fired from their jobs for harassment. with the extreme freedom in western culture some people do not understand how to respect it. I am sure he would have been punished severely in Iran. However, he may not be hurt physically in Canada but his socially life is screwed up for good; which makes it equivalent to Iranian law.
Well, all these nasty movies, videos are teaching and providing the ridiculous directions to people over seas. Some people do not know that even your beloved western wife or girl friend can sue you for a regular sexual intimacy if she is not ready for it!
I'm so sorry what a terrible and stupid news.

Why?

by Disgusted Iranian (not verified) on

May I ask why this story has been published in Iranian of the day? I thought this section belongs to those Iranians who make us proud of being Iranian not some idiot like him!

Mohammad Jahan-Parvar

He is pretty much lost for life.

by Mohammad Jahan-Parvar on

His life is pretty much over in any Western country. Since he is a PhD student, and assuming that the department takes him back once his sentence is over, he probably will not land any job suitable for his degree. His best bet is going back to Iran. This type of criminal record bars him from any type of manegerial or academic job. And such a record will not go away. If he lies about his record, then he can be very successfully retried and sent to jail for a long time for purjury.

There is also reason to believe that he will be terminated and expelled from the program. Departments do not like this kind of horrible publicity. If he stays in the program, many women will not feel comfortable having him in the class or worse, taking classes where he is instructor or TA. The common procedure in such cases is to cut the loss. So his PhD is all but over now. I can't see how he can get into another program.

I have no doubt that he has some native intelligence. He managed to go to Sharif, although it is not clear based on the quota for which administrative section. I need to explain this: University admission in Iran is based on several criteria besides academic apptitude. Some seats go to government employees, Basij militia, and members of "martyrs" families. That used to be 40% of available seats. The rest, 60% in total, is divided  among applicants from large cities, smaller towns, and rural areas. So if you are reasonably good in the last two regions, you should expect to go to a very good place. So there is some version of affirmative action in place to provide seats for students from poorer or remote areas. This information is based on my experience close to 10 years ago. The laws may have changed since.

I suspect that this guy, while academically capable, has been brought up in a way which has crippled him socially. His disrespectful attitude towards women and the fact that he does not grasp how serious the offense and his situation are, point towards this notion. He will have a very hard time living in Canada or any other Western country. Many Iranian students want to study abroad. But studying in the US, Canada, and Europe is not just going to the class, lab, dorm. It has been my observation that the ability to adapt to the new environment has a lot to do with family background and values. Some find it harder than others, some times with very bitter results.

This guy is an idiot and made a mistake, perhaps a prank in his small mind.. but a big one for society .. he's paying for it, he is an individual, not a model citizen and not responsible for saving Iranian's respect/culture etc abroad...

The story has made headline, because it's sad/funny and small time crime, it's getting too much attention here ... give it a rest, imho!

Be glad he didnt' use a cigar like the ex-prez, give him credit for that..

What the hell are you talking about? The name and picture of this guy was released to the media and was published by CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Channel). Nobody took the matters in their own hand! He was sentenced for sexual harassment and, by law, the media has a right to publish his name. Actually they owe it to the public to do so! Under the same law, they are not allowed to publish the victim's name.

This is the same case for every crime with possible public effects. So just stop blabbering nonsense please!

There is no way for you or anyone else to know the possible consequences of such public slandering on someone's life. How would YOU like to have your dirty laundry aired in front of millions of people?!!

Everyone deserves a second chance and the people who have decided that they have the right to further punish this guy by publishing his name and picture in public, are taking away that chance from him.

This is up to the judge to decide whether or not he has paid his dues, not you! Plus, you or Mr.Javid are not suppose to "compensate" for the "shortcomings" of the judicial system by slandering someone's name!

You do not understand (or perhaps don't care about) the possible consequences of such public humiliations!! Would it be fair if this young man; a good student who went to Canada to study, but happened to commit a horrible mistake, now commits suicide because of all this public humiliations?!

Again, there is a judicial system in place that determines the level of punishment of offenders. You have no business taking matters into your own hand.

Why not put a picture of every Iranian who has committed an illegal act of fraud, assault, crimes..etc and was punished by law? How about putting a picture of every Iranian who has groped a woman in a crowed places and did NOT get caught?!!! Who the heck do you think you are to "punish" someone by humiliating him after he has already paid his dues?!

YOu have two points. One is down right stupid the second one may have a merit.

Are you really that ignorant not to realize watching a porn movie in one's privacy is miles away from a sexual assult and that is assuming that your claim to be true that everyone has watched that tape!! So get a handle. What is your motive there? Are you this fellow's cousin? Your social/cultural
IQ seems pretty close.

As for the defamation you may have a point. But you have to make a better case for your argument.
We are a minority group in the world who is already under attack. We ahve the right to become angry if someone defames our country!! Speaking of defamation!!!

In any case if this fellow really wants to make it in academia perhaps he has to change his name and character to say the least!!!

Give us a brake . . . double standard . . .

Some comments:

• What the dude did was wrong, but one cannot blame him alone. Please read.
• I have walked with a girlfriend, sister, another co-worker in Tehran’s streets, no one has dared to say anything to the female who was with me (I am your average person in terms of height and weight, no pahlevon).
• A person walks in Tehran with her father and gets harassed? I do not believe it.
• Is there any standard how much a girl can expose?
• If a man exposes a little of his private parts (not the main one), he gets arrested for indecent exposure, areeh ya nah? So is this double standard?
• From my experience when I lived in the U.S., sexual harassment was enforced against ugly people (mostly men). If one reviews all the sexual harassment cases, he or she will not find handsome men being sued.
• This young man, was raised by his mother and has a sister. As you know, our mothers have more influence on us than our fathers (in Iran).
• Canadians are innocent and never similar things happen to them. Just read the police reports in your local newspapers and give us a brake.

I had my share of being groped, and these days, if it is done to me, I either punch the man, or pinch them, depending on the circumstance. To those who say it is nothing, it feels very violating. Just imagine that being done to your mother, sister, daughter for a minute.

Before you play the victim here, and blame us for reacting to this callus jerk's "nothing serious" defense, you should take a look in the mirror.Your comments don't even make any sense. You say crimes like this happen every day, so because they happen every day we should not be outraged and disgusted? We should treat them as run-of-the-mill daily occurrences, and brush it off as no big deal or "nothing serious", or should we not be outraged because this guy is Irani, and we should support him regardless of what he does?

Also, before threatening a defamation suit, consider this: Defamation is the publication to a third party defamatory statements about a person that causes damage to the person's reputation. Here nothing defamatory was said about this person's reputation. He sexually assaulted a woman, then pled guilty to the charge and was sentenced for the same. Also, before you start filing the summons and complaint, be advised that TRUTH is an ABSOLUTE defense to defamation. Also, matters pertaining to Public Interest (i.e. crime of sexual assault charge and plea), as well as opinions stated on this site, are not actionable as defamation.

This typical unidimensional

by Me! (not verified) on

This typical unidimensional way of thinking and growing up is way too common in Iranians. Most Iranian parents go on and on about the importance of a good education (which is great) with no to very little guidance on how to interact with the opposite sex. The society is not that much of a help either. Therefore for many young people in Iran this becomes a taboo. This guy was definitely successful in his educational matters but his actions show a total lack of common sense and the inability to interact with the opposite sex in a civilized manner. In my mind the fact that he is an educated and probably intelligent guy makes it even worse.

Mr. Farhood Azarsina don't be deceived.

by Fariborz Maleknazri, OBGYN (not verified) on

The glorious ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN and EMAM KHOMEINI (CBUH) came up with multiple solutions to prevent such incidents. I would like to invite Mr. Farhood Azarsina to the glories of the glorious ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN whereupon EMAM KHOMEINI ended 2500 years of brutality of KAISER PERSIS SHAHS against iranian women and deprivation of men. Today both men and women are happier than ever in the islamic of iran, just like when ALL people of IRAN welcomed islam to iran 1400 years ago with open arms and maybe even open legs.

Today there are multiple ways in ISLAMIC REPUBLIC of IRAN to prevent such incidents that can only happen in the corrupt western societies that never occur in iran.

One way is to have "sigheh" and as many of them as you want Mr Azarsina. Such glorious God and EMAM KHOMENI given glory of course does not exist in the west and this is the result of it that we see. We should all sign petition to the governor of Canada and advise him of this genius way of preventing such incidents as in the glorious ISLAMIC REPUBLIC of IRAN. Had "sigheh" been allowed, Mr Farhood Azarsina could perform the "sigheh" right there in the elevator prior to the his sacred act with no problem at all, and therefore he did not have to go to jail anymore.

Another way to prevent such incidents is to have some patience Mr Azarsina while serving the ideals of the glorious ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN. In due time you will then be well rewarded with 72 virgins, and perhaps more, instead of a troublesome lousy kiss. I personally guarantee that and even am willing to intervene and act as intermediary to increase the number of welcoming virgins for you from 72 to any integer multiple of 72 that you so desire Mr Farhood Azarsina.

I was nobody and nothing before revolution, when AYATOLLAH KHAMENEI was nobody and nothing as well. I had my rented donkey and AYATOLLAH KHAMENEI had his very own Citroen, a lemon. That is when EMAM KHOMEINI had no job and no income as well and was living on "khoms" and "zakaat" in Najaf. After the revolution, the glorious EMAM KHOMEINI made me an M.D. and allowed me to practice as OBGYN with no problem at all, while swapping AYATOLLAH KHAMENEI's old Citroen with the newest Mercedes Benz and giving him and AYATOLLAH RAFSANJANI half of iran. How glorious can THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC be which is so generous with all its citizens. Greeting.

Is he a jerk? Or was it a cultural confusion exasberated by a hormonal rage?

In any case I think he should fisrt wipe out that smile from his face and then be punished accordingly. The fact that he is from a prestigous university in Iran is a disgrace.
