She is one of my best friends and I am super sad these days. :((
Change for Equality.org: Esha Momeni, women's rights activist and a member of the Campaign from California was arrested on Wednesday October 15, 2008, while on a visit to Tehran. Momeni who is a photographer and graduate student was arrested in an unusual and illegal manner after being pulled over on Moddaress highway, by individuals who identified themselves as under cover traffic police on the pretense that she had unlawfully passed another vehicle while driving. Esha was arrested and taken to Section 209 of Evin Prison, managed by the Intelligence and Security Ministry. Prior to her transfer to Evin, security officials searched her home and seized property, including her computer and films which were part of her thesis project. The security officials had an arrest warrant and court permission to search the home and seize property. While Esha's friends and colleagues were insistent about announcing the news of her arrest immediately, based on requests from her family this news was announced with delay. Security forces had promised Esha's family that she would be released quickly if news of her arrest was not published. [change4equality.org] [RadioZamaneh]

Esha Momeni
by robert bluejacket (not verified) on Thu Oct 23, 2008 06:43 PM PDTLike all tyrants and thugs, the IRI is afraid of the ideas that this woman represents.
In the final chapter, the Persian people will assert their human dignity. The IRI will join a long list of those who sought to use force to impose their notion of good and bad on a whole civilization.

mullahs' crimes can happen even to the most optimist
by amin from berkeley (not verified) on Tue Oct 21, 2008 03:01 PM PDTmy thoughts and prayers are with esha and her family. i met her in july 2008 in northern california at the iranian women studies foundation yearly gathering .a young, courageous, beautiful woman. it is very sad and ironic ,since esha was a firm believer that the regime can be reformed little by little and now this is what she faces. as much as i disagreed with her and it was --to say the least-- very frustrating to hear esha defending "ebadi", "kiarostami" "khatami" , "sorush" and other cohorts of this brutal regime and have profound illusions about them, i am deeply sadened by this news. if any of her friends read this comment, can keep me updated and/or let me know how to help her i greatly appreciate it. my phone # is 510-673-4906 let's hope for her immediate freedom and safe return to her family
CSUN Student
by CSUN guy (not verified) on Tue Oct 21, 2008 10:28 AM PDTI checked the daily paper here on campus of California State University Northridge (CSUN)and didn't see any news of her arrest. I will try to publisize her arrest to the campus community with the hope that more support will gather on her behalf.
very disturbing
by IRANdokht on Tue Oct 21, 2008 09:56 AM PDTit's always disturbing to hear such news. I am sure they are not that smart to be able to figure out who is who, and someone actually tips them off. That's the worst part of it all... As unlawful these arrests and the whole IRI government is, some folks are still facilitating their brutal reign at the cost of our brave and outspoken activists.
what a shame!

by Annoyed (not verified) on Tue Oct 21, 2008 05:44 AM PDTHer arrest was illegal and she should be released immediately. Shame on IRI and all those so called intelligent service and Pasdars who by the way after getting tired of interrogating and torturing people immigrate to US and specially Canada. You will see your day in court.
The ONLY WAY to Treat IRI Apologists ...
by Darius Kadivar on Tue Oct 21, 2008 04:29 AM PDTRegardless of what the IRI apologists say about Human Rights Progress in IRan, in order to guarantee the regime's survival.
I said it before and will say it until the Islamic Republic of Iran goes to Hell Like BOOZE ! ;0)

Traffic police in tehran
by atabesh (not verified) on Mon Oct 20, 2008 07:01 PM PDTIt's not surprising, for me to be stopped for some thing unusuall. I visited tehran , last summer with my family for the first time in 15 years, and first time for my children to be in Iran, when we were stopped in the middle of the busy highway, by police woman; and when we asked the reason, they told us they are making sure every body
(all women) has no nail polish, and has socks on, thank god I had proper shoes on.
It was funny at the time, but truly it's sad.
I wish all the luck for this lady and her family.
I like to let her family know, that they have all of our support.

since when do they bring traffic cases to Evin?
by choghok on Mon Oct 20, 2008 02:00 PM PDTIf they would even bring all the people who have killed someone on the road in Iran to Evin let alone an illegal takeover then Evin would be filled overnight.
The judicary system is like the democracy in a very sad state.
A person could hold key positions by lies and become interior minister and judiciary don't do shit, but a person does an alleged illegal takeover and she is sent directly to prison.

by MRX1 (not verified) on Mon Oct 20, 2008 12:55 PM PDT->Security forces had promised Esha's family that

Publicity is the best thing in situations like this. other wise this fine lady may recieve a good lesson about peacefulness and compassion of Islam from security forces just like lessons Zahra kazemi received.
Typical IRI
by Kaveh Nouraee on Mon Oct 20, 2008 12:41 PM PDTKnowing their twisted ideology, there's a very good chance that the car she supposedly passed was parked at the time.
While it's perfectly understandable why Ms. Momeni's family believed the "promise" of the security forces to release her quickly is this is kept quiet, at the same time it needs to be brought further into the attention of the mainstream.
Let's all extend best wishes for her prompt and safe return.
