The Story of Maziar
by Nahid Shafiei on Wed Sep 05, 2007 01:27 PM PDTMaziar was the son of Qaren the ruler of Tabarestan at the time of
the Arab invasion of Iran. After his father's death he became the ruler
of Tabarestan or Mazandaran and he resisted the Arab invasion and
fought with them. This is about 200 years after Islam; so we are
talking about the year 212 or so. The Russian influence in the north of
Iran was after or during World War II, almost 1100 years later !
Maziar was later betrayed by his own men and murdered by the
Arabs just like Afshin and Babak, the other two Iranian who fought the
Arab dominance.
You can find all this information in the introduction to Sadeq Hedayat's play called "Maziar".
my friends call me maz too
by monk6889 on Wed Sep 05, 2007 12:06 PM PDTso i had a question my name is MAZYAR (with this spelling what ever) and i always thought MAZYAR fought the russians in the north not the arabs, am i wrong?? and the story that i heard was MAZ- Stands for MAZandaran (northern part of iran by the caspian) and -YAR means lover in farsi so it would be lover of mazandaran which makes more sense if he fought the russians... but please let me know im curious.
Maz or Mazi !
by Nahid Shafiei on Wed Sep 05, 2007 11:51 AM PDTCongradulations !
I have a 30 year old son whose name is Maziar, but all his friends call him "MAZ" ! So which is it, Maz or Mazi ?
But
either way it's beautiful name. He was a patriotic Iranian and fought
Arab domination in Iran. Sadeq Hedayat has a book called "Maziar" about
his life.
Best of luck to your Maziar too.
