latest update on Ali Mahin Torabi

Hi,

First let me thank you for all your support and I should also thank you for remaining interested in Ali's case.

This is what my friend told me this morning:

1) SCE's attorney has started working on Ali's case and has already met with him at prison. I cannot reveal any more details about the content of this meeting.

2) My friend is going to have interviews about him on a few Iranian Radios outside of Iran to ask all Iranians to send letters to Ayatollah Shahrudi about Ali.

3) I have been keeping writing to different American and international media about him, since a very nice reader of my article gave me a precious list of contacts.

4) We are hoping to geth the attention of Christian Amanpour. (She hasn't responded back to my letter yet)

5) We have contacted lawyers in Iran (through our family in Iran).

6) The good news is that since these efforts have been started, Ali seems to feel more optimistic and happier.

by 09/10/207 what is the evolution of his situation.
So many people would like to support the fact that he was not adult when he commited this crime and no child shuld be executed , no human being , adult or child should be executed. I do not know if he is realy innocent . but there is a serious problem with the kind of injust justice whitch is applicated in Iran.
So I hope he will not be executed , but also that he will be juged justly for the probable crime.

This is part of SCE site's info about Ali.

Ali Mahin-Torabi is another youth who was sentenced to death for murdering another youth, Mazdak Khodadadian, during an argument in Bani Hashemi High School in February 2003. According to Ali's testimony, he did not know Mazdak had been stabbed until he heard shouting from the crowd that had gathered around them.

A Juvenile Court in city of Karaj (near Tehran) sentenced Ali Mohin-Torabi to qisas on October 30, 2003. Branch 27 of the Supreme Court upheld the sentence on June 8, 2004. In cases of Qisas sharia law, the family of the murdered have the options of demanding execution of the accsued, demand Diyeh retribution (blood money) or pardon the accused. In this case Mazdak's mother demanded blood money, but if the father pays the requested amount to the mother, Ali Mahin-Torabi's will get executed.

International Committe Against Executions, had initially reported that Ali's death sentence was approved by Iran's head of judiciary Ayatollah Sharudi. Stop Child Executions Campaign contacted attorney Mohammad Mostafaie in Iran. Mr. Mostafaei immediately met Ali in prison and took his case and we were informed that the case was sent to Ayatollah Shahrudi but he did not order the final execution order (Estizan) and instead ordered that the the matter attempted to be resolved by arbitration. If the arbitration fails and Mazdaks father does not settle , Ali's execution will be carried out. Ali Mahin Torabi is now in Reja’i Shahr prison in Karaj.

Why is he in prison. I know he was just a kid when put there, but what did he do? or allegedly do?

Ask favorite Celebrities to join StopChildExecution campaign

I interviewed Nazanin Afshin Jam recently:

The girl is busting her energy trying to draw attention on this campaign. It has been partly successful since several similar cases were definitively stopped and the kids were liberated upon paying the judges blood money. However Afshin Jam needs the help of everybody to be even more effective to obtain effective support from the international community.

There are many Iranians with strong connections in the media world and who are not necessarily politicians ( all the better cause this is not a political campaign but humanitarian). So why not ask our favorite celebrities from Pop Artists like Kiosk, Abjeez to Googoosh and Sattar to get together and help Afshin Jam by rallying her campaign. Same thing with actors like Aghdashloo, Anthony Azizi, Mansoor, Houshang Touzie, Marjane Satrapi in Cinema, Kiarostami, Makhmalbaf (father and daughter) Rudi Bakhtiar and Christian Amanpour who work on CNN could also be contacted, same thing with the Vice President of Google and Pierre Omidyar of ebay etc.. and anyone in the public eye to start by signing Afshin Jam's petition and put their personal egos aside for this unique oppurtunity. BEBIN TV could even contact these people in this intention like they did with the Daie Jan Napoleon tribute. Then we could even bring in non Iranians who could feel concerned or with some knowledge of what is going on in Iran like lets say Sean Penn, Cathereine Deneuve, Iggy Pop, and all these people are in the cast for the film Persepolis due in December in the US. Geena Davis whose husband is Iranian could even be contacted to draw in actors from Hollywood to join in. Possibilities  are endless and EVERYONE CAN CONTRIBUTE. The Hell with Politics or accusing one another monarchist or republican or Islami or communist. EVERYONE CAN JOIN IN.

Have these faces and names of these kids known to them and imagine some kind of common message ( Video Clips, a Poem, Songs ) whateever can be done in a creative as well as efficient way of passing on the message that we are all united on this matter which concerns Human Rights and not politics. EVEN CREATE RIBBONS LIKE DURING THE HOSTAGE CRISIS OR FOR THE AIDS CAMPAIGN. That way we also show Americans and Europeans that WE ARE ALL HOSTAGES TO THIS SITUATION.

MEHREGAN Celebrations could be a good oppurtunity to start this initiative and the door can also be open to Iranian Artists from Iran to join in since this is NOT POLITICAL BUT HUMANITARIAN.

The goal is to SHAKE UP EVERYONE and have everybody participate one way or another. The more the word goes out rallied by the internet and then the press will follow.

EVEN VOA, the BBC, Radio Farda all  would then Beam in through regular programs an have these clips and messages from favorite artists aires regularly. Just like for the Mandela and Ethiopia Concerts of the 80's. Artists are usually sensitive to such messages with a humanitarian role. If they see that People WANT THAT. They will Join in and do their share of duty. 

Even the Iranian.com feature writers can ALL CONTRIBUTE through articles, poems, ART WORK refering to those on the death list and who need to be saved.

I am sure that by now Amnesty International is aware of the case and unfortunately this is not the only situation that needs to have our immediate reaction/attention.

Petitions do not do any good in cases like this and what he really needs a good/experienced lawyer. Perhaps Shirin Ebadi is one option.

Anyone knows if Mrs. Ebadi is aware of this case or not?

By the way, what is the crime that he is being charged for?

We know nothing about his background. We need more info about this guy before we can do any thing.

Today I learned that only this year two other Iranians, in this same situation, have been executed. In one case, the authorities had promised the family that if they keep quiet, their child wouldn't die. And they did, until they learned he was already executed.

Do you know what does it mean? It means that we can’t keep quiet. It means that we shouldn’t give up. We should sign the petition, stop fighting with each other over whatever has happened almost 30 years ago. Instead of living in the past, we should pay attention on what is going on today. At this point it really doesn’t matter who was right or who was wrong back then. During the time we were arguing, a child has been hanged and we didn’t do a thing.So we became all wrong, period.
