Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki urges the UK government to show self-restraint in dealing with protesters, objecting to education reform plans.
Mottaki "advised the British government to practice self-restraint in the face of public demands and to observe human dignity," a Foreign Ministry statement said on Saturday.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran is diligently monitoring the developments in Britain and regrets the fact that the battering of [UK] students…coincided with the International Human Rights Day," the statement quoted Mottaki as saying.
Those, who claim to be advocates of human rights and democracy, "cannot even tolerate a peaceful voice of protest from their intellectuals (academics) and use the tool of pressure and suppression instead of dialogue based on rationale," he added.
Thousands of students on Thursday gathered in central London to protest, as the British Parliament met to vote on a proposal to nearly triple university tuition fees. The Parliament, however, eventually approved the measure, and the fee increases are set to take effect in 2012.
The police turned shockingly violent against protesters, which resulted in numerous injuries and 43 arrests.
Police attacked 20-year-old Alfie Meadows hitting him with a truncheon on the head. The student lost consciousness on the way to hospital where he underwent a three-hour operation.

The servants of the "Little Satan"
by Shutruk on Mon Dec 13, 2010 06:44 AM PST"IRI has a monopoly on torture, rape, murder. Nobody ever wants their monopoly to be taken away."
I think you will find the Amercans excel in that sort of thing - as with Abu Ghraib and Guantanomo, not to mention the massacres at Fallujah and Haditha.
I think you will also find that the Israelis and Saudis practically invented torture and taught their Savak stooges all the tricks.
Iran is a pussy cat when it comes to human rights abuses.

Well said!
Again, Shuti is right...
by Big Boy on Sun Dec 12, 2010 04:40 PM PST...that Iran in 2010 must be compared with what England did in Northern Ireland in 1973. Why can't you anti-IRI crowd understand that when the Supreme Leader says it is okay to imprison, torture, rape, murder anyone that disagrees with him, all of Iran must obey?
"Dozens" of students are "in critical" condition in England!!! Sure, thousands were arrested all across Iran, and many students are still in prision including the winner of the international math competition. Lawyers, professors, politicians, journalists of Iran be damned, Shuti is concerned with the "dozens" of Brits that are in critical conditions.
Shuti, please pray for the well-being of those British students.

As I thought
by Shutruk on Sun Dec 12, 2010 04:18 PM PSTHow many political prisoners are there In Britain? Just go to Northern Ireland and see for yourself. Remember Bloody Sunday when 14 unarmed protesters were shot dead in the streets?
Dozens of students are in critical condition tonight as a result of police who cracked their heads and tramped them with their horses.
It is interesting to see the anti-IRI crowd so sympathetic with the British government.
........
by yolanda on Sun Dec 12, 2010 02:18 PM PSTWow! Free Britain? So how many political prisoners and journalist are held in Britain? How many people are executed in Britain each year? How many people have been stoned in Britain? How many people are forced to confess on National TV in Britain?
Good point Shuti
by Big Boy on Sun Dec 12, 2010 02:02 PM PSTIRI has a monopoly on torture, rape, murder. Nobody ever wants their monopoly to be taken away. Shame on Britain for even trying to prevent some of these students from defacing public property.
Almost reminds me of the silent march of the greens before Basij roared in on motorcycle and trucks running over protestors and murdering them in cold blood. And when that was not enough, they started shooting at them. And when the greens ran away into houses, glorious basij chased them down in people's homes and beat them and arrested them.
Glorious IRI will NEVER be outdone by the pathetic Brits when it comes to violent suppression, torture, rape, and murder,
