Iran has released an American woman held for more than a year on suspicion of spying, reports from Iran say.
Sarah Shourd was detained near Iran's border with Iraq on 31 July 2009, along with Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal.
The Tehran chief prosecutor said at the weekend that Ms Shourd would be freed when $500,000 (£325,000) bail was paid, and could leave the country.

Glad she's free.
by KatieCole on Mon Sep 20, 2010 10:00 PM PDTI am sincerely glad that Sarah has been freed after being held prisoner for a year. Yet I am also worried that we showed weakness to Iran and they might actually extort this weakness. If they paid $500,000 for the release of Sarah Shourd, then we would expect they will ask for the same amount for each of the two prisoners left in Iran. Who really paid for that amount? This only shows that our government is weak and will easily yield for that demand. This will only make the enemies extort our weakness, therefore, making our safety somewhere outside US questionable. Does this release gone through legal process? In 2009, 3 individuals backpacked in the area comprising of Turkey, Iraq and Iran called Kurdistan. The Kurds are mostly all that live there which is why it has its name. Iranian authorities took all hikers into custody and accused them of espionage and of being spies. Sarah Shourd was luck to be a hiker that was let go as authorities couldn’t choose for a while whether or not to really do it. A $500,000 request for her release was made. Of course the United States of America said no way. They didn’t release all of the hikers though. One of them is her fiancé in there.

by azadi5 on Tue Sep 14, 2010 09:43 AM PDTI guess there is not much difference between IRI and the Somali pirates. they take people hostage and ask for ransom.
I agree, good news.
