OTTAWA — Staff at the Iranian Embassy were out with the hoses Friday after someone splattered the front gate and entrance door with paint.
While embassy officials could not be reached for comment, the RCMP confirmed that an “unknown suspect” threw two paint-filled bottles at the front door Friday afternoon.
“We are currently investigating the matter,” said Sgt. Stéphane Turgeon, noting that there had also been a small, peaceful demonstration at the embassy Friday.
Friday marked the eve of the first anniversary of the 2009 election in Iran that saw President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad returned to power in a presidential vote generally regarded as fraudulent.
In subsequent months, hundreds of thousands of Iranians took to the streets to protested the vote. Iran’s ayatollahs responded harshly. Scores were killed and thousands arrested.
