Washington, 26 October (WashingtonTV)—Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf is among the five nominees announced on Monday for the Freedom to Create Prize.
The prize “celebrates the power of art to fight oppression, break down stereotypes and build trust in societies where the social fabric has been ripped apart by conflict.”
Makhmalbaf was nominated for “taking a stand against social oppression” and for his works which “promote freedom, understanding, open societies, secular humanism, and respect to others.”
His 2001 film, Kandahar, which highlighted the living conditions and plight of women in Taliban-era Afghanistan, was named one of the top 100 movies of all time by Time magazine.
