Peres greets Iranians in Persian on Iranian new year festival
The Jerusalem Post
20-Mar-2009 (13 comments)

President Shimon Peres issued an audio greeting to the Iranian people, urging them to shake off the rule of "an oppressive and fanatical regime" and return to relations of peace and harmony with Israel, which, he recalled, the two countries enjoyed when the Shah was in power, until 1979. He called on the "noble Iranian people" to eschew the rhetoric of hate and even offered a greeting for Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, in Persian. Israel Radio, which operates a channel in Persian, aired the message, also conducting an interview with Peres where he recalled a visit to Iran in the 1970s and recounted his visits to Iranian military bases and praised the "gracious" demeanor of the Shah.

Peres is a living Legend

by Arash Kamangir (not verified) on

undoubtedly Peres is one of the greatest politicians Middle East has ever seen and he is regarded as one of the founders of the democratic State of Israel. If anyone has committed war crimes, then we have to look for them in Iran such as mullah Rafsanjani, Khamenei who sent at least one million Iranians to their death in Iran-Iraq war.
Peres will be remembered in the history of Israel and world and mankind as a great humanist and the mullahs as traitors, murderers and despots.

Relations between Iran and Israel are bad, and...

by Ostaad on

they must improve. Back to Shimon Peres and his "greetings", all I am saying is that his "greetings" did not sit well with this Iranian and I'm sure no fundamentalist anything. Why? Because he did not come across as a "friend" of the people of Iran. In fact he was inciting Iranians against their government, if you know what I mean. He used vile, demeaning racist language talking about the Iranian "hordes of supporter" some of whom happen to be Iranians who support the guy in charge. A "Shitty little country", as the last London mayor described Israel, that has constantly talked about military attacks on Iraninan installations for mere suspicions of unauthorized nuclear activities must think about the consequences of its warmongering and how to fix that instead of sending snide "greetings" uttered by a known war criminal. So, please stop telling me what he was doing. I know what he was doing. He was talking down to the Iranians in a very arrogant way and I for one did not feel warm and fuzzy about the jackal.

This is where Israel is going wrong about whatever it thinks it must do about Iran, it must understand Iran cannot be intimidated nor fooled mere nice talk. Iranians are not opposing Israel because the Akhomdha are doing it. Iranians, most of whom have nothing against Jews, are for moral, religious and even political reasons against Isreal's policies toward the Palestinians. This opposition is real and Ahmadinejad is using it as another lever to control the events. Look, nice peace-loving Israelis just elected in an open and fair election elected the kind of people who are at the far right. The Natanyahu-Leiberman government is the real "greetings".

How many times do I repeat that Iranians simply do not give a rat's derriere about Shimon Peres.

BTW, giving him a Nobel prize was wrong. Now the world knows he is a war criminal - although not yet proven in any court of law - therefore whoever gives that prize should get it back. Peace and Peres don't go together. Don't compare Ebadi with Perez. It's a FACT that Ebadi has not killed anyone.

Noruz pirzuz.

Ostaad - Shimon Peres and Iranian

by Mehdi Mazloom on

This despotic and corrupt regim like the akhoodah, deprive the Iranians their right to know, shut down more then 100 newspaper. Iranianns people are suppressed and force fed with daily dose of hate, and propaganda towards another country 1000 km away from its border, which had done nothing to compromise their lives. Off course you get the type of reaction you had written. Nice trick by the regime to distract the Iranians from their hard lives, though it won't last long

It is Shimon Peres who received the same Nobel Price for peacec as Shirin Ebadi of Iran had received. - Not that fundamentalist in Tehran. ahmadenejat.

As one of the founders of state of Israel, and responsible for its defense establishment, No one knows Iran as much as Peres does. It all depends to each person's pre-disposition about Peres's intended purpose. All he was doing is to greet the Iranain people.

Please, bare in mind that, it is the despotic regime in Iran which vilifies the Israelis, and the ones who deny the holocaust - not the other way.

Just let the Iranians in Iran the freedom to ask, read, inquire and speak just as much as you and I enjoy, and you will hear a totally different tune coming out of Iran in regards to their relationship with Israel.

Gol-dust:  have you tried to replae leter "l" on you s/n with "h"?. I think with type of garbage you are spreading here, the new s/n would  be more appropriate for you.

a piece of advice to my dear lady zion

by Fatollah (not verified) on

despite our differences in opinoin, I don't remember anyone here insulting you during your religious and none religious holydays and festivities. Believe me, most Iranians do not care about the State of Israel and I thank for President Peres's message, though I must agree with some of the commentators here that his choice of words were not wise. His message should be uncondtional. Having said that, please don't bother to reply, after all I am just another Islamist on this site.

you seem to see our shortcomings, but you never bother to see or perhaps even refuse to see your own folly!

Happy Norooz

Ideed Sad ...

by ./. (not verified) on

Indeed it was sad that after the video message of a very well liked leader of a the greatest nation on the face of Earth (President Obama), the israeli president, who is known around the world as a war criminal, a thug, and a gangster should send a message of Nourooz to Iranians. He certainly ruined that part of my nourooz.

regards..

Perez: Your choice, either Kick mahmoud out, or we'll bomb you!

by gol-dust on

What an idiot!

Now damn Zionists want to f... up our peaceful NOROOZ for PR?

Mazloom the Zion Mossad, get the f... out of our site! Even on our New Year you guys are harrassing us! You evils! Israel's Perez is so stupid that he thinks any Iranian with a little brain wants to listen to this child muderer? This ass thinks Iran is going to rise up and fight for Israel and over thorow the government on israeli's behalf? He lives in a huge bubble!

In fact, his message ensures the reelection of ahmadi nejad! This stupid zionist thinks he can start a revolution in Iran or have someone else coming to office because he is so popular in iran and iranians would say:"Ya, let's not vote for mahmoud since the nurderer Perez who we love and respect so much told us so, before he bombs us??

What a moron! He should be put to death for crimes against humanity! No wonder these zionists are in deep shit!

Perez just wants to dilute Obama's message, so Iran does not reposnd positively to Obama! After all, Israel doesn't want US and Iran to have a good relationship! This is ot coincidence, this is all their evil thinking!

May Israel go to hell!

Ostaad

Mazloom, I agree with parts of Peres's message.

by Ostaad on

I am just saying Iranians are just not into Shimon Peres, if you know what I mean. His tone was arrogant, cold and patronizing. Look Iranians are getting a lot of shit even from "shitty little countries" like Bahrain nowadays, but for Israel to think Iranians care about what Shimon Peres has to say to, or about them, is a sign that Israel has no clue about its horrible image and insignificant position. His description of Ahmadinejad's "hordes of supporters" was racist and off the wall. I do agree there are rent-a-crowd type supporters in Iran but a lot of Iranians especially in the rural areas genuinely support Ahmadinejad. Shimon's sermon to the Iranians was a "shiny" example of how insular the Israeli "leaders" are about the regions.

Farhad Kashani

I guess this “war

by Farhad Kashani on

I guess this “war criminal” who hasn’t done anything to us, is more Iranian than Khamenei can ever be. At least he celebrated Nowrooz, read your beloved Khamanei’s message, he talks more about Imam Jaafar Sadegh than Nowrooz in it!

I guess bottom line is some of us Iranians don’t deserve the respect and gratitude of others. We need people like Khamenei to treat us like sub-humans, then we gonna start loving him! But others who truly respect our culture, like Israelis, we bash them 24/7, over absolutely nothing that they did to us. They’re killing Palestinians, ok that’s a bad thing, we’ll condemn it, and wish Palestinians all the best, and we’ll try to bring just peace to this crisis, …but what is this stupid blind hatred this Fascist regime created??? They only way it makes sense is that Khomeini and his regime don’t actually have any wisdom, common sense or a “heart” to realize what they’re doing is wrong ! The only thing they're good at is to opress people and cause chaos around the world and promote fundamentalism.

What a travesty.

Ostaad - How to defeat anti-Israelis own argument

by Mehdi Mazloom on

During my life, I have come to realize that, all one needs with pundits like you, is to hold their feet to the fire. The watch them dance.

Lets take Peres's speech and address each pertinent ones.

Quote: "President Shimon Peres issued an audio greeting
to the Iranian people, urging them to shake off the rule of "an
oppressive and fanatical regime"

Do you have argument about the regime today in Iran?. Just about everyone else excpt you and capt agrees with this statement.

Quote: and return to relations of peace and harmony with Israel, which, he recalled, the two countries enjoyed when the Shah was in power, until 1979

Does he seem to call for the return of the shah?. All he was referring to the era during which Iran & Israel had friendly relationship. He is calling for the STATE of  relationship.

Quote: He called on the "noble Iranian people" to eschew the rhetoric of hate and even offered a greeting for Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, in Persian.

He feels that Iranian people themselves are good people, and they are the real victims of this regime. They seek to live in peace and harmony with everyone else. Indirectly he emphasizes the point that this despotic regime is not the legitimate representative of the Iranians whom he knew well. I agree with him 100% -so many many others on this planet.

Quote: He dismissed the apparent hordes of supporters seen in
televised speeches given by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as"sycophants or people who are afraid [of the regime."

You tell me Mr. educated, which part of  this poignant sentence you don't agree with?

Finally my good man. if you wish to be honored (and respected), you have to earn it. When you get off your pompous position of calling people with names like "Zionists", which they have not chose for  themselves, intended to demean them, Rather, read from different sources the real reasons as to why Israeli react as they do. Their hopes, aspirations, and dreams, then you and I would have conversations on different level, which could lead to better understanding.

The biggest obstacle is, Israeli leader like Peres,  know Iran's glorious cultural, history, history and language. Treat them with respect and friends. The regime in Iran not only doesn't have a clue about the Israelis, these gollah-haa in Tehran, even go out of their way to stay in their dark caves of contemporary human civilazations.

A war Criminal !

by Maryam Hojjat on

For sure he is more concerned about Iranians than current thugs who are running IRI.  In the past we Iranians did not have any enemies except ARABS such as Sadam but with IRI every country is against Iran & Iranians except those who are bought by IRI with IRANIANs' money for their own interest.

Payandeh IRAN & IRANIANS

Ostaad

Mehdi, and your point is???

by Ostaad on

OK, I'm going to suppress my urge to call Shimon a war criminal who's evaded an international court of justice for his war crimes, and it's high time he was sent to the dock in the Hague.

But, his asinine "greetings" reveals he's utterl clueless about what Iran is all about at the present time.

Here's the deal, sending a message to the "Iranian people" praising their deposed dictator and reminiscing about the time the Zionists were roaming in Iran, does not sit well with the Iranian people at all. Trust me on this, I don't have any poll numbers about the Iranian people's opposition to Zionism and the Zionists, but I assure you it IS overwhelming. The person who wrote Peres's "greetings" must be fired for sheer incompetence, or if he did it ad lib, then this IS proof that "your president" is senile.

Mehdi Mazloom

Lets read it.

by Mehdi Mazloom on

Here are the first paragraphs from that article published in Israeli newspaper  "Jerusalem Post", related to President Peres's greeting to Iranian people.

Please read it and judge for yourself. (he even spoke farsi)

"President Shimon Peres issued an audio greeting
to the Iranian people, urging them to shake off the rule of "an
oppressive and fanatical regime" and return to relations of peace and
harmony with Israel, which, he recalled, the two countries enjoyed when
the Shah was in power, until 1979. He called on the "noble Iranian
people" to eschew the rhetoric of hate and even offered a greeting for
Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, in Persian.

Israel
Radio, which operates a channel in Persian, aired the message, also
conducting an interview with Peres where he recalled a visit to Iran in
the 1970s and recounted his visits to Iranian military bases and
praised the "gracious" demeanor of the Shah.

Peres heaped praise on the Iranian people and expressed his
belief that they would eventually topple the regime because "leaders
who do not serve their constituents are eventually removed."

He dismissed the apparent hordes of supporters seen in
televised speeches given by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as
"sycophants or people who are afraid [of the regime]."

Regarding the future of relations between Israel and
Iran, Peres replied he was more interested in "relations between Iran
and itself. They will not destroy us. They will only destroy themselves
[if they continue on their current path]." Alluding to several
vitriolic speeches Ahmadinejad made against the Jewish State, a
relaxed-sounding president said "so we hear another speech and another
speech... we have been hearing these speeches for 4,000 years."
