February 14 (25 Bahman): developing news
by Shifteh Ansari
14-Feb-2011

And so, here we are again. After months of silence achieved through unbelievably violent suppression, intimidation, arrests, torture, and executions, the people of Iran are preparing one more time to take to the streets in solidarity with the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, and to protest Iran's state of total political and civil suffocation following last year's fraudulent elections.

Just as Ali Khamenei and his subordinates were getting really comfortable calling the 2009 uprisings "sedition," and the protesters "seditionists instigated and funded by foreign powers," the people have mobilized to take to streets another time.

Though the official application for a license to demonstrate was filed last week with Iran's Interior Ministry by Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi, the impression one picks up from visiting the Iranian cyberspace is only marginally indicative of support for the two men as "leaders" of the movement. It appears that the Green Movement continues to live, much as it first started, without the need for leaders to tell it what to do.

The demonstration is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. Tehran time on Monday, February 14. I will be posting any news I hear about it here. I would like to invite you all to join me in posting news and information about the developments here, too. In the absence of objective formal reporting out of Iran, the ordinary people of Iran use their limited means to get their voices out of Iran. Let us all help to get their voices out. We are the media.

Folks want to have clear patriotic targets ,clear path & icons to be motivated to scream the hell out. Egypt day or Tunis day is okay but has no rallying power even as an excuse to get out. The green leaders have to realize that choosing religious days such as ashura or Arab days such as today will keep a lotta patriots indifferent.

a true Iranian leadership would have concentrated on "Iranian national days" even if they have to make it up or such as charshanbeh souri, sadeh, sizdeh bedar, babak day, ferdowsi day, dec 19, nov 21, cyrus day or akhoond koshoon day to maximize the contrast between them the omaru ommaties vs us the Iranian. my cousines & family say that as it is already no body cares what eslahat leaders ask em to do since boys & girls do their own thing and shout their own slogans any way. No more id-less targets. God speed & Cheers!!!

What an amazing day it has been...

by Roozbeh_Gilani on

People have been fighting back the bassij forces. It was by no means a silent march as requested by Mr Mousavi.

No matter the outcome of today's events, it is just amazing and a testiment to strength of anti regime feelings that after neary two years of brutal suppression, jailings, rapes, torture and executions, by the islamist regime, people are still willing to come out in such huge numbers and fight the regime back, unarmed. This very popular green movement has made it's mark, had it's martyrs, and is here to stay. It will be alive and kicking in one form or another until the islamist regime is gone. I have no doubt about it after what happened today.

AFP: Iran police fire tear gas at protesters

by Shifteh Ansari on

AFP - Riot police on Monday fired tear gas and shot paintballs at protesters who turned what they said was a Tehran rally in support of Arab uprisings into an anti-government demonstration, witnesses said.
The clashes broke out at Tehran's prominent Azadi (Freedom) Square when crowds of opposition supporters began chanting "Death to Dictator!" -- a slogan used by protesters against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after the disputed 2009 presidential election.
Witnesses said police fired tear gas and also shot paintballs at protesters who had gathered despite a ban by authorities.
