Yolanda: Who is Ameneh?

I’m glad you asked.  In the song, Ameneh is a name of a girl that the singer is in love with, so it is female name like any other, or is it?  It turns out that Prophet Muhammad’s mother’s name is Amina, and so when this song first came out before the Revolution it was frowned upon by the religious establishments, and the rumor has it that Aghasi was asked by them not to sing this song.  And to compound the problem, Aghasi’s songs were very simple songs, trash according to some.  They were written for common people.  Decades before Aghasi’s popularity among the masses, music and songs were mainly a luxury of the wealthy people, but with the advent of modern day electrical devices such as gramophone, radio, television, and later cassette players, music and songs were finding its way among the masses, but even at that singers like Aghasi were mainly isolated in small entertainment clubs in an area of Tehran called Lalehzar District.

Aghasi’s popularity was contagious, his songs were simple, his music rhythm was fast, he defied the conventions of the time by going into audiences and having them participate in the entertainment, sometimes giving them a chance to sing in the microphone.  He became so popular that he broke many barriers, including Lalehzar singer performing in the national radio and television shows and later in movies.  He eventually even sang for the upper class parties including for Shah’s ministers.  He popularized music of southern Iran throughout the country, including Bandari dance among all different ethnicities in Iran.

By the way of the simplicity of his songs, Ameneh song created other problems for him.  The lyrics of the song are about love for a girl who is a challenge, the lover’s advances are being ignored, but the lyrics are very simple and the words can so easily be rhymed with almost anything, including for lack of better description, and I put it very politely, “your mother’s vagina belongs to me”.  So, using “belong to” people came up with wide array of other “poetic” verses!  Most of them, lighthearted.  It became a national joke to come up with new humorous lines.

After the fall of Shah and right after Mullahs took over, overnight Aghasi went from being one the best known singers in the country to just a nobody.  He was banned from singing.  I believed he eventually opened a restaurant and earned a living that way.  Towards the end of his life he was allowed to sing one more time in the Lalehzar District again, thousands of people came to see him.  The District had to be closed to accommodate the people.  After that performance he was banned again.  A couple of years later he died of complications from a heart attack.

Aghasi spoke the language of the simple people.  Unlike the highly uppity educated people who can not carry on a simple conversation with the common man, or the so called highly enlightened religious people who try to take advantage of the mass’s ignorance; Aghasi brought joy to the people.  One man's trash is another man's treasure.

...would you please tell him something from me.  Tell him I have not found any of his books in any garage sales around where I live, so either his books are very good, or perhaps people around here don't even buy his books to begin with, and then to turn around and resell them in garage sales.

And also, please try really hard not to faint when you get close to him.

Wow...you always keep your promises! I can't believe how fast you blog everything!

I know we're supposed to brainstorm on how mixing Beethoven with Hemati (or Aghasi or as I call them Trash music!)...but today I'm too busy to think about anything other than the event I'm going tonight! Orhan Pamuk (my favorite living author who happens to be really handsome too) is coming to LA and I'm going to be there!! Isn't it great?!! I've forgotten all my miseries and life seems shiny and bright!!

   It is supposed to be what you said .  It is yet again another typo error caused by mispronuncification of a word spoken by a Persian man with an Iranian accent.  I will fix it once the blog falls off the featured list.  Like a firend of this site used to say, in the matters of correcting bloggers errors like this one, you might want to consider sending a private email via the contact button.  Just a thought.

Thank you for the beautifully translated lyrics. Be very honest with you, 50% poems I read on IC, I don't even understand 'cause I don't have the background knowledge or the poems are too abstract or too profound for me. I have no rights to criticize any poets and poetesses.

I noticed that your poems always rhyme, which is amazing! You have amazing repertoire of words and vocabulary! That is enviable!
